(POST-GAME) Marquette, Tues. Jan. 1, 7pm, FS1 / 970AM

9 turnovers first half many unforced. Only 2 second half!!!!!!! Team did a wonderful job using clock in the second half unlike SH game!!!!!!!!

I am not always complimentary of the coaching staff but they deserve great credit for the game plan shutting down Powell on Saturday and Howard last night.
Pretty high praise indeed. When we're making shots and sharing the ball, our first team is as good as about anyone. It is also great to see the guards continuing to rebound as they do. I also expect that Keita will continue to improve and become an important aspect to the rotation. But, it is good to see that blending him last night had no detrimental impact to the offensive efficiency. And, as he gets settled in, I think Heron and Clark will settle into their more natural roles as well. Looked pretty darn good last night.
All good points. I think one of the keys to our success moving forward is for the kids to stay in the flow of the offense when our shots are not falling, which is going to happen from time to time. I think we have had a propensity to force things when we go cold. But I also believe we’ve grown a lot from the SH game and I know the staff is preaching patience to the kids when they hit a rough patch in a game.
Great win!

Really enjoyed being at CA tonight. One positive about having these games on campus is a true home court advantage. I imagine the recruits felt the energy and that can only help.

-Our defense was strong. Intense and very few lapses

-We did a good job managing our fouls. No ridiculous ones

-In addition to the good ball movement, whenever there was a mismatch, I noticed Simon, Ponds and Heron backing the defender down low. Even if they don't get the shot they want, this can provide us with an inside-out effect. I like it.

-When we were up by ten, we stomped on their throats and finished the deal. Sign of a good team.

-Greg Williams is coming. Enough said.
Agree, this was our most complete game to date.

Great bounce back win. It shows what we are capable of doing, I think we can run with any team in the country. I was rapping with my buddy about how confident i am with multiple starters taking outside shots. Even Simon, his shot is not pretty but effective. Our closeout defense has gotten better as has our interior wall up D. Credit to the coaching staff. And Shamorie makes his team better when is a true triple threat. Last few games,he was merely a double threat. But then again, maybe that was needed to get Clark and heron off their mini slumps. Either way, good to get that Seton Hall past us. I could not sleep after that game and thought about it constantly as i'm sure happened to others here. Let's keep this thing going!

Great game, top to bottom. Coaches deserve a tip of the hat for all the crap we heap on them. Glad we were able to get them in foul trouble. Keita's presence was more impactful then I had hoped.

Most everything was said so just a couple of quick notes.

- The defense on Powell and Howard was nothing short of fantastic.

- Overall, Simon has raised his level of play a lot since Conference play has began. Forget Precious (O.K. don't FORGET him) Simon is our most important recruit for next year.

- I don't care if it was Mullin or St. Jean, or Ron Linfonte, whoever was in charge of the bench last night, the coaching was outstanding. Excellent plays out of timeouts, and SJU took timeouts at the exact right time every time Marquette made a move. Great use of nine guys, and the staff got Keita just enough minutes to be a help without pushing a lineup that would be more out of sync at this point.

- Anyone who said this freshman class was a washout might want to rethink their position. The only thing holding Williams back is that we are loaded with guard talent ahead of him.

An area I believe we have really improved in is in-bounding the ball. The loss to Georgetown a couple of years ago where we blew a 5 point lead with 15 seconds left still stings!

I don't hang on to stuff game to game, or proclaim that we are suddenly improved or suddenly a crap team . When you are playing away in a sold out arena, as we were against Seton Hall, any little thing your opponent does when you are comfortably ahead energizes the crowd and momentum begins to shift. It upsets your rhythm, and the result is often like the air taken out of the room, play gets sloppy as you feel the other team upping their play. It happens and although you can be critical of a player(s) or coaching staff for things done or not done, its part of conference home and home series.

We were home, the crowd was amped up, collectively angry and frustrated over the Seton Hall game, but at the same time totally behind our guys. Our guys responded with enough highlight reel stuff that had the crowd exploding. Considering how moribund we usually are, it was a reminder when the best teams in conference had to walk into alumni Hall as a viper's pit.

Last night we nailed 45% of shots from three, battled a bigger team even off the boards and many things went extremely well. Make no mistake though, that this was the same team that deserved to win against SH and played poorly the last quarter of the game. When we are good, we are very very good, and when we are bad, open the floodgates to criticism on here.

Trimble plays D and plays hard. Mostly he was playing to counteract the terrible D that Dixon was playing.
Now with Keita back and Dixon not really playing, I would have Williams get all of the Trimble / Dixon minutes

Feel compelled to add one more item. Having the team ready to roll and play focused so soon after the crazy Seton Hall game is easier said than done. And for 18-23 year old kids much easier said than done. Think about how hard it was for US to let it all go.

Impressive.

Without going into detail, as soon as the SH game ended, Mullin had the team focused on the next game and not the one that just ended.

I remember reading in Bill Bradley's EXCELLENT book, The Values of the Game, early in his Knicks career, he would carry a bad game around with him till the next game. His roomie, Dave DeBusschere, took him aside and told him basically, "Look if you are going to make it in this league the only game that matters is the next game. You have to let it go and move on". This is precisely what Mullin instructed his team to do.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Each game Williams has shown he won't hurt us playing important minutes. To me he plays as if he has been around for a while. On defense he helps out and offensively he plays and scores with confidence. Deserves more playing time, not going to hurt you Chris.

Not this year. On switches, Trimble often defends the other team’s PF or C. He might not grab a ton of rebounds but he does find a body to box out. I think giving Trimble around 10 mins a game to replace Simon/Heron is using him perfectly. He also doesn’t turn the ball over or force shots. Next year is a different story where I can see Williams getting a lot more burn.

I think Williams has been brought along slowly and he is progressing really well. I don't think he is being held back and we will see more of him as the season progresses.

I loved that in garbage time, he was one of the trusted guys, and he responded with discipline, control, and I believe a bucket too, which was a nice dagger even if Marquette was dead at that time.

Credit to Mullin for emptying the bench early. Wojo kept his starters in till 9 seconds remaining, and I'm certain he was concerned with ranking and tried to narrow the gap of a hopeless loss.

My favorite part of the evening was being told by a fellow fan to sit down for giving them an ovation after a Marquette TO after back to back dunks.

Still have some miserable people (Fans) who show up at these games.

These type of people need to be banned from the Arena!!!!

Interesting point. I think that one key advantage of this team, despite the fact that there are many new parts, is that the top players, besides LJ who is wise beyond his experience anyway, are all of upperclassman age and in their third to fifth year in an NCAA program. Ponds/3, Heron/3, Simon/4, Clark/5. Even Keita/3 and Dixon/3 have some experience. Of course relying on transfers greatly abets this situation but still it's good to have experience.

I'm not giving up on Dixon contributing this year in the BE portion of the schedule. There will be games and matchups where his offense is a big boost off the bench. And if he continues working on D and playmaking there is no reason he cannot be a solid bench contributor now and starter down the road.
