(POST-GAME) Marquette, Sat., Jan. 16, 12 NOON, FS1 / 570 AM WMCA

Was very impressed with Roberts rim protection today and it was against a pretty big team. Definetly hope he gets more PT to prove he can do it consistently and I think he will get that opportunity.

Sure out muscled but a game for the  taking

hit a couple more free throws    N just poor end of game

Exactly. We shot 9 for 14 from the line while Marquette hit 14 for 16. Champagnie, Williams, Posh, Wusu all missed one foul shot while Moore missed on a one and one.

I thought when that kid on Marquette drove to the hoop for that last basket that he committed an offensive foul the way he extended his arm to move Posh out of the way but we never get a bounce or a call.

That 3 point shot, from distance with.1 second on the clock at the end of the half, by quette was symbolic of their luck in this game.  BTW, John is now my lrast favorite BE player./media/kunena/emoticons/tongue.png

All in all the team is improving. It was around the same time last season that things seemed to kick in. It appears the same thing is happening this season. As good as Roberts played, him getting two fouls early in the first half really hurt. Could have been the difference in the game if he was able to play the entire first half. Doubt we're down 11 at the half.

Kudos to Roberts for another strong game adding 4 blocks today. No doubt our starting center.

Cole is pretty much useless unless he is shooting a set shot.

Every time we drive in the lane we put up a shot. We never drive and kick. That's where Cole can be very effective. Our guards and wings don't have to put the ball up every time they drive the lane. How many of our shots were blocked at the rim today and all season long. If they would have kicked a few of those out for a Cole, Champagnie or Williams three maybe we have a different outcome today. Primarily Posh and Dunn are extremely guilty of this.

Despite playing with obvious pain in his side, Posh Alexander had 9 points, 8 assists, 5 steals, 4 rebounds. He's going to be a very good player here. #sjubb

He already is. Talk about heart and hustle. This guy can take it away from anybody.

Yes that three right at the half buzzer huge

missing front end of a one n one huge

this was one of the games they needed to win

Figures Theo John, a career 53% FT shooter, goes 5-5 from the line. All huge.

I wasnt able to watch the game but a quick look at the box score makes this look like a game St. John's should have won. We had 13 more shots and trips to the line was close. So was it great defense by Marquette or our inability to make shots?

Fair point but Cole missed several open looks today and is shooting 33 percent from behind the arc.  Kicking it to him is not going to change our season.

Andrew,
I wouldn't go as far as saying we definitively should have won, but we certainly could have won. It was an odd game and was at times over reffed. Our defense did a very good job for the most part but our offense was inconsistent. We opened up well, but soon found ourselves trailing and by the time halftime came we were down eleven. At that point I thought we had little chance of winning.

We changed up and started to go to the basket more and also turned up the press as the second half started.  Shortly after that we we went on a run led by a redhot streak by Champagnie scoring 12 points in 93 seconds (FYI he was held to just two first half points) and some tenacious turnover fueled defense led by Posh who was extremly disruptive to Marquette. That run led us back and we took the lead but did not really build on it. From there it was a back and forth affair and anyone's game down to the end.

The last possession will stick out for many because it was pretty ill-conceived. Down by just two points with about 23 seconds left Dunn dribbled time off the clock and the offense started way too late. Finally Cole drove to the basket somewhat off balance and had his layup blocked. We retained possession, but only had 1.5 seconds left. Off the inbounds we were still able to get off a very contested three from the corner from Champagnie as time ran out.  That shot did not miss by all that much, but miss it did and that was the ballgame.

In the end we turned Marquette over quite a bit (19 times), Roberts played very well on the interior (blocked four shots), Champagnie had a huge second half (scoring 18 ponts) and Posh thrived as well as somehow survived a very physically bruising effort. Marquette made just enough plays to win the game and we missed on one or two plays that could have put us over the top. It was frustrating because we need to find ways to win at home because winning on the road has been very hard for us.

"Thank you Ghostzapper. Your summary was fantastic as always. Looking at the box score we did a lot of good things, including offensive rebounding and steals. Need to find ways to finish these games."

And that's on Coach,  plain andd simple.

I was happy with MA as our new coach. Now, after watching every game for the last 2 seasons, I've come to believe that I was wrong. The only thing he seems to coach is the trap defense and he has not recruited well. A few observations:
- There is no half court defense. They switch too quickly, which often leaves a mismatch underneath or a wide open three.
- There is no half court offensive scheme, no set plays, no pick and roles, no back door plays.
- There are no coherent inbound plays.
- There no special plays after time outs.
- The wrong people seem to have the ball in their hands at the wrong times (the last play of this game for example).
- Nothing has really changed from the first game of last year until now.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this ending well.
