(POST-GAME) Marquette, Sat., Jan. 16, 12 NOON, FS1 / 570 AM WMCA

Dunn is an easy kid to like.  The effort is always there, he handles the ball well, and plays defense.

That said, he doesn't have the tools to play the type of minutes he is playing.

Lots of questions on last possession . Why Dunn with the Ball and not Posh ? Dunn was way too nonchalant bringing the ball into the front court and still dribbles around aimlessly . 2 . Do you really want Cole going to the hoop when he hasn't made a lay up all day ? He doesn't have a lot of hop to begin with .  Bad loss at home . Disappointing . Head Scratcher all the way .
He gave it to Posh, and Posh didn't do anything, but give it right back.  I wonder if he felt he couldn't make his move there.  Remember, he left with about 3 minutes left, pointing to the side of his body (he took 2 nasty spills in the game).  I wonder if he was feeling it again.

That one hurts more than any other. Felt like one we should steal. I can't tell you how much I disagree with our decision to hold the ball for the last shot when we were down 2. 25 second is an eternity. Get a good  look quick and then stretch the game out if need be.

Tough one.  Good news they don’t quit.  Again they generally play hard. But of the top 7 teams, 14 games, this is one of the few they realistically couñd get

I like Dunn.  He was better last year, however.  His shot does not look bad to me.  Not sure why he's not a better shooter

Mike Anderson said the last play was supposed to be a screen and roll between Champagnie and Greg. But they didn't execute. Said Marquette took it away, but ball could've gotten there.

We just need better, Boo.  He's a good kid that plays 10 minutes on a good team.

If Anderson was committed to not having Posh hsve the ball on the last possession , which is beyond comprehension , Williams would have been a much better choice than Dunn . Who has a history of doing exactly what he did and waste way too much time with that dribble . Williams can penetrate , shoot or Pass . Dunn can't do much besides drive and he wasn't going to get that on this posssesion . Infuriating loss .

That’s exactly what I would want to see. But not getting anywhere close to that when we draw it up with 25 second left is bad. Not a good look.

Everytime we ran bad offense at the end of games last year, Anderson said it wasn't what was drawn up.  So either the players are not getting the messages in the huddle, or he's covering his own butt for bad playcalling.

Honestly, I'm not sure which one I'm hoping it is at this point.

Tied at 73 and 2 minutes to go with the ball.  Ten seconds on the shot  clock. We end up with 3 awful possessions.  A Williams force over Theo John. You have to get by him or create room for a shot.  Second possession was a Penny force. Third possession made no sense. You hold for the last shot in a tie game.  You leave time for an offensuve rebound or a foul annd an extra possession down 2. Marquette has better shot makers and executed at the end. We didn't. Since we play well at home, no surprise we hung in there, so I'm not jumping for joy.

Guess no plan B.

Of our last 6 possessions from the 3:00 + mark, 5 were horrendous:
1) Dunn drove the middle, appeared to be open in front of the basket but passed diagonally right to a Marquette player, they scored to go up 3
2) Champagnie hit a 3 to tie at 69
3) Dunn took it upon himself, got a layup blocked
4) Williams took a early contested step back 3 from the corner
5) Champagnie took a one footed awkward shot from the side
6) The time out last play debacle

Hard to understand why if the last play was a designed Williams / Champagnie pick and roll, the ball was just not inbounded to Williams

Despite playing with obvious pain in his side, Posh Alexander had 9 points, 8 assists, 5 steals, 4 rebounds. He's going to be a very good player here. #sjubb

excellent summation

If we had won the other must wins I could normally forgive and look past this loss since we fought hard to get back into the lead but the wheels spun off the last few minutes and its hard to swallow on a Saturday Covid afternoon.

Our bigs just don't hang at the rim and are always out of position....Moore and Cole are one on one minded players...you can throw Dunn into that mix also...Wusu...Williams...champ...Earlington and roberts are my guys...

What did coalch say in the timeout, "dribble the ball until you panic then throw it to someone else so that they force a terrible shot".  This one is on Coach.   I don't understand why a specific play was not called.

I think you have to hope it's the players, because you can always try to bring in new ones who can think on their feet if the original play breaks down. Bad playcalling at a place like St. John's usually means it's here for the duration of the contract.
