(POST GAME) (HofF@Mohegan Sun) UMass, Sun. Nov. 24, 3:30p, ESPN2, 970 WNYM

Champagnie was quietly involved in almost everything good that happened. Hit all his FTs 3 steals 2 assists 7 rebounds. The turnaround in the 2nd started with his 3 pointer in my opinion. A bunch of hustle plays including that nice assist to Roberts dunk.

Paul, A very heady player who, if he sticks around will be an excellent 4 year kid. He has a good idea how to play in a very good way.

5-2 looks so much better than 4-3. Take the split and keep playing hard. If we can finish conference play at 9-4 then I'll be happy. Typically in rebuilding years we do much worse than that.

All I want is a competitive team that's still playing meaning ball (chance at the NIT) 2-3 months from now, and the team has accomplished that during the first few weeks. Good work.

The most impressive part of this game was how HARDt he team played!!!!! They imposed their will on the other team over a 7-8 minute stretch that ended the game. They play where Earlington full out sprinted up the court and made the lay up on the pass from Rutherford was quite telling!!!!!

Each game so far its been a pleasure watching Champagne. So smotthe and always seems to be in the right place

Biggest move of the game was Anderson going into the trapping, swarming, matchup zone late, completely confused UMASS.

Great games for Caraher, Roberts and the consistency we've come to expect from Champagnie (our freshman was the only guy to knock down all of his ft's today) I also thought Rutherford was able to affect the game positively even though he wasn't scoring. Scrappy D, took care of the ball much better than yesterday and even hit the boards hard a few times. He'd been trending down for me so nice to see him be a positive contributor out there.

I asked this in the game thread right before it was locked but can anyone remember the last big we had who made a jump from the previous season the way Roberts seems to have made? I'm having a hard time thinking of it. Feel like our bigs have mostly regressed for the last handful of years.
Billy Paultz for sure. Roshown McCleod when he transferred to Duke.
Jayson Williams from his sophomore to junior year. Of course he sat his freshman year.

This team I believe will continue to improve in the next 2 months and will hit its stride in February! If we could fast forward time to February we would beat Vermont and Arizona State and be 7-0 right now! All of my fellow Johnnies hang on to your seats it’s going to be a fun ride!!!!!!

Ye of little faith! I DVRd the game but came on the site during the game on my way home an thought we were getting killed and were going to lose. I was pleasantly surprised to heat we won (although I have done the same as Dinkins on occasion with another team I like, switch channels to change the luck).

My take:

I agree about the great game and roles that Caraher and Roberts along with Rutherford (can you please make a layup though) Champagnie, Ellison and LJ played as mentioned by several other posters. Left out was Williams who was on the court and part of that comeback.

We all know Anderson’s quote about “25 minutes of hell and 15” minutes of what the hell are they doing”. While it is a good quote and joke, he also foretold us what to expect. We will not be a pretty team at times but if we win, I’m okay with it.

We have not played full court 40 minutes of pressure. He tends to ramp it up doing the game and switches up the type of pressure. I expect he will go more full court as the team further acclimated to it and he gets the one additional body in Steere. He will still switch up they type of pressure and the trapping as mentioned by another poster definitely screwed up UMass.

I would like to see more of Caraher at this point than Williams. Williams defense has been good but he has not provided any type of offense. I understand he is getting his legs under him and I have not given up on him but Caraher provides us right now with a better scoring option which is needed with the second team.

Anderson has taken some criticism for who he has out on the floor during times during the game (basically the second unit). Portions of the second unit not only kept us in the game (at one point one the second half the five on the court were Ellison, Champagnie, Williams, Caraher and Rutherford) but started the comeback and put us up before Roberts and Figueroa were reinserted.

Good win. Now on to Wagner.

Watched our second half run and just wanted to point out some positive for Williams who was huge in the five point stretch that put us up for good.

- great defense forces shot clock violation.
- assist that sprung ME free for the tie.
- steal and dove for ball which looked like a for sure tie up, wrestled it free and that led to Caraher’s corner 3 for the lead and we never looked back.

Get healthy and get confident Gwill!

Steere, if as good as advertised, Champagnie and Josh certainly appear to be nice interior, BE level pieces. That’s a solid core to build the program on. Some complementary baseline guys like David and Marcellus appear to be competent role guys. Not bod!

Spot on observation Logen, the second half shooting defense %, steals, deflections & easy baskets were evidence of that. Big reversal from sieve like first half.

This.
Moreso it was a great decision holding off on this until 3/4s through the game against a very young team. By the time UMass could respond the clock was their biggest enemy.

The Umass game played out the way we needed to as we mentioned prior to the game. Play a FULL game with defensive intensity, use our depth, not rely only on 2 guys. We need full games and good defense to be able to win games this year. We aren’t going to win them on offensive talent alone because we don’t have enough. Steere will be a big addition because it seems our extremely young frontline is becoming a strength of ours, not a big weakness as I thought it would be entering the season. Our young frontline guys have a nice future here. Adding Steere could be a downright problem for a lot of teams alongside Roberts and Champagnie as they grow together as a team. Will have a pretty solid frontcourt trio.

16 minutes for Heron, 19 for Figg, Cham and Roberts 33 and 32, and a win. Bizarro. .
And why is that bizarro? Because they're the so called stars, and have to get 30minutes even when stinking it up?
I'm glad when someone is playing poorly that they sit, no matter the player. You want major minutes, then do good and you get those minutes.
Today Roberts & Champ deserved those minutes.
This has nothing to do with who deserves the minutes (Roberts nor Champagnie's minutes did not come from minutes that would normally go to Heron or Figueroa, Caraher's and William's did) but with the fact that when a team's top two scorers play a combined 35 minutes and score a combined 13 points, it usually doesn't bode well (meaning a win) for that team, especially ours unless you are playing cupcake city which we were not.

Not a hard concept to grasps unless you are loaded with scorers which we are not.

Didn't have chance to watch the game but kept checking phone for updates. Was a bit nervous seeing how close it was early on, but nice to see us go on a run at the end to put them away comfortably. I'm really happy for Caraher having his time in the sun. He needs more of a role in the offense. He's a better offensive player than I thought. The key with him is getting him open looks. I noticed several games he had to rush shots because a defender would close out very quickly on him. When he gets that extra second to release the way he's comfortable, he's a solid shooter. Not sure how this game looked, but I've noticed that our driving lanes have been cut off a lot lately and we've been passing around the perimeter of the 3 pt line for much of the shot clock. Some of you are of much better basketball minds than me...why is it that other teams are able to stop us from driving but we seem to allow drives at will against Vermont, ASU, etc.? It seems we play pretty solid defense most of the time. Are they beating us off the dribble?

Roberts has been a godsend and I'll be the first to admit I thought he had no place at this level. Boy was I wrong and I'm glad to eat more crow. Earlington is also way more polished than I expected. He makes it look easy almost always converting layups as put backs with 3 or 4 guys on him. Great hands on that kid. I was really hoping to beat ASU but we just aren't ready yet. Our talent level is not there yet and Heron has been a no-show which gives us almost no chance against those types of teams. I think 1-1 is right on par with where we should be after the tourney.

I love how the stat sheet is spread out and we have everyone playing a role. This is how you pick up wins when your best player or two are not very productive. I think back to the Duke game last year...they shut down Ponds and that was all she wrote. We relied heavily on 1 player then. Looks like we will have a different approach under CMA which is nice. One thing we seem to sorely need is a legitimate pure shooter just ready to go off every so often. We need a guy who will knock down open 3's consistently. FT shooting is also very poor and I'm just not sure how it could be that bad at this level. There are high school kids who would shoot at a way higher %. FT's are just muscle memory and repetition in practice. In close games that will kill us if not corrected. Anyway, I'll take 5-2 at this juncture beating everyone we were supposed to and losing to 2 solid teams in Vermont and ASU. No bad losses yet with a rebuilding team and a new staff. I hope he gets some 4 star kids in here consistently in the near future, because I think we can really have something with more talent. This is a more fertile recruiting ground than Arkansas. Let's hope.

For a team that relies on pressure defense, out struggles at the line work against us two fold. That first half was especially evident of this. I thought our defense looked good for most of the half, a couple over helps and nice ball movement led to some open 3s but the kids were busting their ass. Covert on our free throws, set up our pressure, and I think a ten point lead heading into halftime would have been in the cards. I’m happy and optimistic with where this team can be come BE play.

Regarding the dribble penetration our guys with the exception of Dunn (speed)and LJ ( length and quick first step) do not have the ability to get to the rim off the dribble against top competition on the offensive end. Hence the same works on the defensive side of the ball. The exception is Williams who utilizes his strength, quick feet and long arms for his size to contain dribble penetration. On offensive he struggles because his dribble is high and he does not always get in a low stance to attack.

Additionally, the type o highf ball pressure we play from the basket will sometimes break down and allow for dribble penetration.CMA does not made this happening occasionally as the goal is to speed the other team up to make them uncomfortable and lead to turnovers, rushed/poor shots and fatigue in the legs.

Really pleased with Roberts' growth
Caraher looks like he's more than a one trick pony - willing to mix it up
Champagnie settling in nicely as a frosh
Earlington continues to give good minutes off the bench
One concern - we need a steady ball handler against full court pressure
We looked very shaky against their press, especially when Rutherford was on the bench

It is too bad that SJU didn’t get to play UVA. I was hoping to see the clash in the style of play. No doubt SJU would have been in deep trouble. Just would have been interesting. Heck they beat ASU by just 3. Although they seem to beat everyone by “just 3” or so it seems.
