(POST GAME) (HofF@Mohegan Sun) UMass, Sun. Nov. 24, 3:30p, ESPN2, 970 WNYM

I'll take any win when LJ scores 7 and Heron scores 6. I don't care if we're playing an 8th grade CYO team. Have to get Heron right somehow or we have a pretty low ceiling (which may be the case anyway)

Great games for Caraher, Roberts and the consistency we've come to expect from Champagnie (our freshman was the only guy to knock down all of his ft's today) I also thought Rutherford was able to affect the game positively even though he wasn't scoring. Scrappy D, took care of the ball much better than yesterday and even hit the boards hard a few times. He'd been trending down for me so nice to see him be a positive contributor out there.

I asked this in the game thread right before it was locked but can anyone remember the last big we had who made a jump from the previous season the way Roberts seems to have made? I'm having a hard time thinking of it. Feel like our bigs have mostly regressed for the last handful of years.
George Johnson. He went from good to great.
George's #s were 10.1, 13.8,17.4 and 19.4. He went from pretty good to sensational by his senior year. Plus, he averaged 10.5 & 12 rebounds his last two years. Why he has never received recognition by SJU is a big question mark.

It’s beyond ridiculous and long overdue. Best back to basket game of any SJ player, bar none, since 1974.

For me, the best minutes of the second half came when the umass big hit a three and waved three fingers at Roberts. Josh promptly beat him down the court and slammed back a missed shot. Intimidation, baby. :cheer:

As I remember it, regardless of stats, George went from very good to great. Will never forget his play as a frosh in the near-upset win against the Indiana team that went undefeated in their championship run. And agree Section 9, his "legacy" has been sorely overlooked by the university.

I mentioned that game and told him I recall Kent Benson being quoted as saying that George was the quickest big man he faced. George said ithat years later he roomed with Kent when both were with the Pacers. Kent told him he was afraid of him when they played. He laughed about it.

He also thought that they were one player away from being a title contender that year.

Most everything’s been said already. Suffice it say

Great game by Roberts and Caraher thankfully.
Another stinker by Heron. Has to be in his head.
Need to start getting Heron and LJ some open looks as both are struggling to creat own shots resulting in too many forces. LJ, thankfully, is finding ways to score.
Concerned about Williams. Right now he seems to be thinking too much and not playing instinctively. Seems to get beat off dribble a lot and chasing his man. He’s too quick and athletic for that to happen. Needs to get out of is own head.

Happy with any win at any time of the year....and love seeing the growing confidence and good play from our “role players”... but what do you guys think is up with Heron... no show in 4 of 7 games so far... just adjusting to a new primary role? Just inconsistent? Not as good as we all thought?

Hope he figures it out for his professional sake.

Yeah, that team had 4 double figure scorers: Glen, George, Beaver and Frankie Alagia. Cecil Relford averaged 9.9, so they really had five and John Farmer averaged 8.2. But after that the next highest scorer had only 1.7. George really had no real back-up n the post. And those six guys were the ironmen of that team.

I hope he figures it out so that Mike Maher does not have to change his handle.

This team needs more than just free throw shooting practice, they need some instruction on how to shoot free throws. Concentrate on your free throws and block out the othe stuff.

Caraher has got some shake to his game. Roberts and Julien compliment each other so well and will only get better. How about that pass by josh?! That’s the third post pass he’s made this season that impressed me. Earlington seems like at the very least he’ll find a way to contribute. I’m not as sure about Williams as I once was but am 100% sure he’s not moving the same. If he gets healthy and continues to struggle then we can have serious concern. Steere is a guy we are all hopeful about. Our underclassman really have showed a ton of promise moving forward.

LJ played about as good as possible for a 7 point performance. Everywhere on the court.

Great win for this team and it was a pleasure to watch.

Beyond Roberts and Caraher, I thought Nick Rutherford really stood out in this game. Although he struggled to score, his defense and late free throws are not to be overlooked. He also rebounds very well from the guard position.

LJ made sure the deficiencies of Saturday's second half did not carry over into today. At one point in the first half the Johnnies had eight steals to one TO. During that span LJ had five steals and was handling the ball against their pressure.

My oldest daughter and her husband arrived from NJ just around 3:30 so I had to miss 85% of game. So happy we were able to pull it out. Just from little I saw, seemed like a great game for Caraher & Roberts. Heron & Figgy ???

I'll admit I tuned out for a good portion of the second half to watch the Cowboys and Patriots game, and followed the game through Google sports. It was frustrating watching us play and I'd had enough. So I just figured I'd use some other form of psychology and see if it would work.

Thankfully, I can watch the game on replay via ESPN3. Being we only got 13 points combined from Figueroa and Heron, and still came out with a resounding win is encouraging going forward. Hopefully this is something we can build on as the season progresses.

Remember we still add Steere in another three weeks.

A little before my time (born in 1982) but I remember hearing George Johnson described as a double double machine. Must have been nice. Will have to do a deeper dive on google tonight and brush up on my history.
George was a refined and highly recruited player coming out of high school. Josh was primarily a receiver playing football in high school and did not devote primary time to hoops initially. That to me means he is blossoming & has a high upside. Nice to see.
For a kid who’s play as little basketball as he has, he has tremendous instincts for the game. Knows how to get himself to the right place at the right time

Rutherford reminds me a lot of Mike Moses. Unfortunately he doesn’t have Mullin, Berry, Glass and Wennington to pass to.

I said it not long ago. Josh Roberts will be and All Big East player before he is done here, and maybe beyond. A shame his first year was wasted but he’s got time to keep rising. The kid has massive upside.

Billy Paultz for sure. Roshown McCleod when he transferred to Duke.

SJU is very lucky that with the combination of the number of transfers and the way he was used last year Roberts is still here.
