Lavin was absolutely not a better coach.
For heaven's sake, Lavin used to call momentum ending time-outs after WE scored a basket and we had all the momentum!!! It was the most idiotic thing ever. Lavin used to run that stupid weave that the top of the key. Lavin was worse.
Mullin's record is on par with Roberts, and Roberts had to deal with banishments and such. Lavin may not been much to write home about, but to say Mullin is better tells me it's personal with you or you need to be committed.

Roberts was 5-13, 6-12, and 6-12 his last three years in conference. 6-12 with ELEVEN juniors and Mase as a 5th-year senior. That’s a whole different level of bad.

Yeah, maybe so.... But shit still stinks, whether it's dog shit or cow shit. One might be stinker than the other, but it all stinks, nonethless.

Good coaches teams improve throughout the year. Poor coaches teams regress. Mullin is a terrible coach. He has no idea on how to manage a game.

I hope that this team has not quit. I can't watch another game like this.
You might want to skip watching our next game!
This may be the most unpredictable team in recent memory. If even just one or two players don't perform well we seem to reach a whole new level of bad.
When was the last time we had 4 starters foul out against a mediocre DePaul team. There is a wide disparity at the foul line because our players play poor fundamental defense. Just like in the NBA. There is really no point in covering up our staff's technical shortcomings any longer. They have not been able to learn from their mistakes and I'm not sure how much game tape planning takes place when DePaul beats you the same way twice. This is the first time in my life when I see no value in attending either campus or MSG games any longer. Sure, age and bigger responsibilities are a reason, but the amount of monetary investment lost over these 4 years tells me I can pay a year's worth of cable Bill's and have money left over by dropping attending games. It's become like "No Country for Old Men".

Well said. No experience coaching period yet he makes $2 million. The continuos rebuild stinks, but he is not the answer.

Just finished watching this abomination of a game. As I posted a few days ago on another thread - we were getting **way**ahead of ourselves predicting what seed we’d get in the NCAA tourney.

I blame this on Mullin, not players. I have given him every benefit of the doubt, but no more. By the way: Reciting the box score to your players during a taped-on-TV timeout is only marginally better than tying your shoes.

Win the BE Tourney and maybe I will change my mind. But NIT = abject failure with this group of talented players. Pissed!

It was also a stronger league when Roberts was here. Arguably the strongest conference of all time. That was due to the number of good to elite coaches in the league. Calhoun, Pitino, Boeheim, Wright, Beilein/Huggins, Dixon, Thompson III, Brey, and Cronin. Looking back thats an amazing list right there. Sorry but Mullin wouldn't of done jack in that league against those guys with his work ethic.

A very good point. A really, solid group of coaches and a tougher conference.

Based on what I've seen to date, Mullin would've gotten his ass kicked regularly like Roberts.

Staff and player Post game comments reflect a lack urgency. I get not wanting to appear in panic mode, but sometimes u have to sound the alarm.

I think Ray Morgan captured it best in a post after a previous game...Mullin seems to approach the season as if it were an 82 game schedule where ebbs and flows are expected,

In college BB, not a winning formula.

On to the Cintas Center!

Lavin had a 40-32 conference record. Mullin has a 20-51 conference record. I think it's pretty clear Lavin is a better head coach than Mullin.

I was optimistic that we would win this game but they won't fool me again. This looked like a team playing out the season not one fighting for its tournament life. If we don't make the NCAA's this year, I don't know where this program goes from here. At this point I really don't care if Mullin comes back next season. I posted a while ago that this (Mullin experiment) wouldn't end well and I am sorry to say I was right. We made a decent scorer look like Larry Bird and a decent big man look like Patrick Ewing today. I can't see winning another game this season. I will watch this season out but I won't be fooled anymore. Baseball season can't get here soon enough.

Plus, SJU will definitely regress next season. So how would keeping Mullin for another season help anything?

He shouldn't have been hired in the first place. I hope Cragg does what needs to be done and finds a new head coach after this failure of a season,

Based on Big East conference performance, it is impossible to deny that Lavin did a better job than Chris has done to date. Not even close.

That’s what I said in a previous post. The team reflects the lackadaisical and laid back demeanor of their Head Coach

Why are we comparing Lavin, Roberts and Mullin? They all do have one thing in common - they all sucked as head coaches at St John's. You might as well add Jarvi$ to that list. We haven't had a decent coach since Frannie left town.

It seems that Mullin has been calling the shots for the past 4 years. Our new A.D. will be facing his first big challenge this off season if St John's doesn't make The Dance. Fans and the media will be calling for significant changes to be made to the coaching staff for next season. The questions will be: (1) Will the administration allow him to do his job and take the necessary corrective measures and (2) Will the A.D. have the intestinal fortitude to take such measures.

If we don't make the NCAA and the entire staff returns intact, I'm afraid that a lot of fans will walk away from this dumpster fire. Mr. Cragg won't have to worry about playing more home games at MSG. We might as well not play any games at MSG in the near future. We won't draw flies.
Whatever explanations or opinions expressed about today’s game , there is a undeniable truth that we played most of the second half with 2 of our Starters on the Bench with foul trouble . Again our opponent shot 42 free throws!! That is horrible . We shot 28 . DePaul outscored us by 14 from the foul line . Forget Strus. The game was again decided by the Officials . Our team , no, any team cannot play with such a huge discrepancy . And , it’s been a season long issue , starting with game 1 against Seton Hall .
You are kidding right. DePaul had 6 fouls and we shot threes. And you really believe our guys play good defense, just look at Clark, with 3 fouls he reaches and slaps the opponent. He just doesn't have any basketball IQ. Our coaching staff is handicapped offensively and defensively. Our defense was so wanting even Strus had Trimble and Simon trailing behind on his drives. Wouldn't exactly call him a speedster.
