(POST-GAME) Creighton, Wed. Jan. 30, 6:30p, FS-1 / Sirius 98 & XM 207

was looking at the Creighton board last night and this excerpt of a post did get a laugh out of me

"we got our shit pushed in by a very average team coached by a vegetable."

Sorry guys, I have not read the entire thread but wanted to point out a couple of things that I saw. First, the defense was outstanding last night against a team that is very good and efficient on the offensive end. Defense is all about desire and effort and last night the effort was there. If we hold teams under 70 points, we will win a lot more than we lose. Second, I have been very hard on Trimble, but he played an excellent game last night and even drove the basket and hit a floater. He should do more of that. He could pump fake and get guys in the air because of being known as only being a guy that shoots 3's. I hope he builds on this. Lastly, we were very sloppy with the ball last night, which is not normal for us but we won because of the defense we played. Play defense like this on Saturday, and clean up the turnovers, and we will have a shot Saturday.
Was at Knick game last night and as I always do when I can’t watch live, I DVD’d the SJU game. Usually I avoid knowing the score of the game, but last night I kept tabs on the score because I didn’t want to watch another loss. Great win. And just like that, 16-5 and tied for 3rd place in Big East. Hopefully a win we will build upon.
Knicks? lol. What a waste.
A team that was 22-27 comes into MSG and blows the Knicks out by 24pnts.
On the bright maybe we'll get Zion.
Was nice to see Mullin control the huddle.
St. Jean was practically silent...almost to the point it was all planned out.

I hear Mullin was very embarrassed by the media pointing out his tying his shoes as if he was detached from what was unfolding around him. It was the worst visual of the Mullin era. In that sense it was planned out but the image will last forever unfortunately.

The team needs that sense of urgency every game. You cannot just walk through the motions for 30 minutes and hope to pull it out in the final 10. I can understand 1 or 2 letdowns a season as it is a long grind but 95% of the time you need that kind of urgency and focus if you want to be a top 25 team. It is up to the coaches to drive them to this and perhaps this is what former NBA players have a hard time communicating to college kids. These NBA players had the drive and talent to bring it every nght and that is what made them NBA players. They need to motivate these kids and have them ready every night. Hoping a switch went off and someine noticed the difference. I clearly saw a them ready to play at the tip last night.

We're you at the game? If not how could you know about how the huddles played out aside from that one they had miked and that was only for a portion of the TO?
What are you trying to get at ? No, I was not at the game. They had more than one time out miked up last night and St. Jean didn't speak in either of them

This is not a bad thing... it's a positive.
It was really nice to see Trimble break out. Admittedly I was one of his detractors and I'm glad to see him make some of us look like fools. Yes it was only one game but let's hope he can get more of a feel going forward. Seeing him attempt a 2 pointer was really weird but awesome and hope he does it more if he has the space. I believe it was a floater and it was really crisp! I knew everyone would get a kick from that. LJ needs to get the ball more...this kid truly is something special. He plays like his life depends on it every game. Once again, there were lots of "no no no...YES!" shots that are tough but he somehow sinks consistently. He has a great feel for angles and just has that touch you can't teach. He really does everything...defends well, scores in paint and finishes, dunks, has a mid range shot, 3 PT shot, and the heart of a winner. Crazy for a soph.

Ponds had his swag back, you could just see it. Can't describe it well but he just seems to have that extra pep in him. We need him to be THE guy and stop trying to show NBA scouts he can distribute. It seems he waits to score, focuses on distributing, we get in an early hole, and then he realizes later he needs to score. He should be scoring from the jump and daring teams to stop him. If they start stopping him or he's off, then distribute. He's almost impossible to stop driving and when he has that going it opens up his 3 PT shooting since they have to think about the potential drive. It's funny, many teams don't seem to realize his range even in his JR year...they will give him some space and I laugh because I know he's going to pull up and make it from places other teams don't expect him to. He can score in bunches and that's when we're at our best.

The key to maintaining leads is balancing your attack with drives and not falling in love with 3's. 3's will win you games and lose you games. Driving to the hoop is a much higher % shot and you can't really go cold with dunks and layups. You also get the chance for FT's even if you miss. We played very smart realizing that.
Speaking of Figueroa and Trimble have you ever seen two guys shoot one handers from well behind the three point line. Figueroa lets the game come to him, would really like to see him get into his offense more.

Twice last night we fouled away from the ball and they shot and made a 3. They got possession or shot 1 and 1. Think it happened with butler or Georgetown too. Rare play. Glad it had no bearing but we gotta stop doing that

I'd be hesitant to judge a forum based on one or even a few posters. Lunatics abound.

Agree. Can you imagine if our fan base was judged off of just your posts. People would think we are the most delusional fan base in the country. ;) :)

That is one of the 5 corniest things I've seen on the internet.

Most time outs last 90 seconds, so they showed two of about 15 seconds where Chris was involved. What I'm getting at is the shots at St. Jean. You say it's a positive because Greg wasn't involved. I can tell you that at home games which I attend, usually both Chris and Greg speak to the team with St. Jean drawing up plays. Chris has said that they review these plays in the days leading up to the games and this is just a review. It's been that way since year one and unless there's a staff change that's the way it's going to be. So the little sound bites you see on TV are not indicative of what totally goes on in time outs game in and game out.

Still think you missed my point. I get to my share of games as well.

No shot was taken, or intended, at St. Jean but great to still see the HC take lead in huddle after the bad optics in previous game. Fact is St. Jean was dead silent & inactive in those media appearances yesterday and it's possible there was advance discussion prior to game to avoid any repeat so soon while camera is in your face or crotch.

I was watching Figgy shooting a 3-pointer and thought, " He could not play in half the gyms that CYO teams play in."
Shoot the ball any higher and it would have come down with snow.

OK gotcha'. But I think this whole time out situation and Greg's and Chris' involvement, or perceived lack of, is way overblown. I doubt that the coaching staff discussed how they are perceived and how they would present themselves when the cameras were on them.

We, the fans, have been seeing this behavior for over 3 years with the St. Jean and Mullin tag team coaching duo so we did not consider it an overblown optic but the media and national media caught a glimpse and it became a PR concern at St. John's. I'm happy it got the coverage it did because Mullin now knows " everyone" is watching and may adjust his style of management. I also doubt he and Mitch disappear for any long stretches after the season. I don't think there will be any more long distance learning, recruiting or coaching. We had three years of no AD and Mullin answering to no one. While a handful of fans seemed unperturbed by the behavior this is a 12 month per year job like most fans are or were used to working for a fraction of the salary.

Mullin doesn't care who is watching. And aside from a bunch of guys on fan boards, neither does anybody else.

In your world, maybe. Mullin doesn't know your world exists and if he did, he could care less. The only thing that would have made the whole shoe tying situation better would have been if he sat on the scorer's table while he was doing it.;)
