(POST-GAME) Creighton, Wed. Jan. 30, 6:30p, FS-1 / Sirius 98 & XM 207

Only the second home-and-home sweep that Mullin has gotten in his four years as head coach (Depaul two years ago).

We did beat Georgetown twice two years ago, but it was 2 out of 3 (second win was in the Big East Tournament).
Also Mullins first win @ Creighton. Check another goal off the list.
Not only Mullin's first win at Creighton, I believe it's St John's first win ever at Creighton. Before the game, if you had told me that Simon was sick and would only play 7 minutes, I would have never believed that we would have played as well as we did based upon recent performances.

Kudos to the kids for sticking together and playing a great game on the road. Congrats to the staff as well. They often get hammered on this board (rightfully so) but deserve credit where credit is due.

Hopefully, we have good karma and positive momentum as we head into Duke and Marquette. A split would be awesome. Dare I dream that we can pull two rabbits out of the hat?/?????

Was at Knick game last night and as I always do when I can’t watch live, I DVD’d the SJU game. Usually I avoid knowing the score of the game, but last night I kept tabs on the score because I didn’t want to watch another loss. Great win. And just like that, 16-5 and tied for 3rd place in Big East. Hopefully a win we will build upon.
Ponds-Trimble-Heron-Figueroa-Clark is a ridiculous offensive unit. 5 legit shooters!!! Who can do that?
Trimble averages 2.4pts per game and is shooting 34.9% from three. I wouldn't necessarily call him a legit shooter. However, he played extremely well against Creighton, and not just with his shooting. Hopefully this game gives him some confidence going forward....

Once again, it was all about shooting the ball well: 58% overall and 42% from 3. Early on, I thought we got lucky that Creighton was not hitting wide open 3s. Creighton lead was 6, and they had the ball and missed an uncontested 3. Then Ponds went off in the last 5 minutes of the half, and the entire team responded. Another run was started by back to back steals by Ponds and Figgy, which ended in a layup and dunk. Another Ponds steal led to a Heron breakaway and dunk. It was a key steal by Ponds, and absolute karma, as Heron was on the ground after he was knocked down on a drive and failed to get the call. Reminded me of that great steal earlier this season that prevented an alley oop dunk. Can't remember the opponent that game.
Was nice to see Mullin control the huddle.
St. Jean was practically silent...almost to the point it was all planned

We're you at the game? If not how could you know about how the huddles played out aside from that one they had miked and that was only for a portion of the TO?

It was really nice to see Trimble break out. Admittedly I was one of his detractors and I'm glad to see him make some of us look like fools. Yes it was only one game but let's hope he can get more of a feel going forward. Seeing him attempt a 2 pointer was really weird but awesome and hope he does it more if he has the space. I believe it was a floater and it was really crisp! I knew everyone would get a kick from that. LJ needs to get the ball more...this kid truly is something special. He plays like his life depends on it every game. Once again, there were lots of "no no no...YES!" shots that are tough but he somehow sinks consistently. He has a great feel for angles and just has that touch you can't teach. He really does everything...defends well, scores in paint and finishes, dunks, has a mid range shot, 3 PT shot, and the heart of a winner. Crazy for a soph.

Ponds had his swag back, you could just see it. Can't describe it well but he just seems to have that extra pep in him. We need him to be THE guy and stop trying to show NBA scouts he can distribute. It seems he waits to score, focuses on distributing, we get in an early hole, and then he realizes later he needs to score. He should be scoring from the jump and daring teams to stop him. If they start stopping him or he's off, then distribute. He's almost impossible to stop driving and when he has that going it opens up his 3 PT shooting since they have to think about the potential drive. It's funny, many teams don't seem to realize his range even in his JR year...they will give him some space and I laugh because I know he's going to pull up and make it from places other teams don't expect him to. He can score in bunches and that's when we're at our best.

The key to maintaining leads is balancing your attack with drives and not falling in love with 3's. 3's will win you games and lose you games. Driving to the hoop is a much higher % shot and you can't really go cold with dunks and layups. You also get the chance for FT's even if you miss. We played very smart realizing that.

Agree with much of the foregoing. Team success this year against the better competition comes when (i) we play decent defense (last night was terrific for the last 35 minutes); (ii) shoot the ball well; (iii) group rebound; and (iv) stay out of foul trouble. The fact that we did the foregoing last night with one of our starting 5 out is significant. One thing I really want to see happen is Keita do more, if he is capable. That, plus the emergence of Williams and the sustained play by BT will go a long way to assuring us success as the season comes down the stretch.

16 wins and no longer in last place.
Steve Lavin tee shirt night at Creighton? Guess it was a good omen.
Trimble did a decent job subbing for Simon.
The bench actually was effective for the first time all season.
Now all we need for the Duke game is Zion getting arrested on a DUI and we take Marquette to the wire.
Decent? You are a tough marker!
Waiting for Keita to be effective inside the paint.
Don't like Keita's defense at all, reaches instead of moving his feet. With our short bench we can't afford to lose him.
Keita's pace is too frantic. I don't want kids like that in any sport. It's a complete deal-breaker for me. It's one of the reasons I loved Ponds from jump street...his pace is just awesome.
The problem is they really can't do that switching thing on D when Keita is in game because he gets stuck on perimeter. Gtown killed us with that.
Bottom line when we put effort into closing out we have a really good chance to win.

Seeing as it’s not sour grapes after a win, how god awful was the reffing last night? It’s really unbelievable.

I hope you got the tickets for free. They should let everyone into the Garden for nothing, then charge them to get out, when the Knicks are playing.

I could not agree more. My wife was not understanding why I was screaming at the officials through the TV while the team was up 14. But it's just incredibly frustrating how we can't buy a call.

When Ponds got tied up by Z (I can't spell his name), the replay showed the only thing he tied up was Ponds arm. Never got near the ball. Heron mugged repeatedly on his drives, and flopping on every St. John's drive was another problem the refs couldn't get right. What about the Figgy drive? Did the rule change? It used to be the basket counted if you released the ball before contact.

My thoughts on Trimble, like many other posters, sway from game to game. Glad to see him hit a couple shots, the stats don't back it up, but he does have a good shot, hopefully more will start to go down after last night's performance. One area where he trumps Williams is defending a bigger guy down low, Williams doesn't have the strength yet and gets killed on the mismatch, Trimble does enough disrupt.

Speaking of defending down low, how much energy is Ponds expending trying to body a guy that's way bigger/stronger than he is? The ridiculous quick switching will be the death of this squad. Luckily Creighton wasn't interested in taking advantage of it.

LJ is money from 12-15 feet especially after taking a dribble.

Worst call of the night was LJ not getting credit for the basket after the offensive foul, he had clearly released the ball way before contact.

Ponds was so slick last night, I wonder if when he stole the ball and scored, and crashed into the line of cheerleaders, if he did not come away with a couple of phone numbers.

Yes the rule changed quite a while ago-no more basket counts but an offensive foul.

This game could be a turnaround in the contributions of Trimble. Maybe playing those extra minutes relaxed him as he just seemed to be so confident taking shots. If I recall shooting was considered the strong point of his game and it was never more evident than last night.
Usually a player breaks out in the OOC games but too many of those games remained too close to,get minutes for the bench and in many instances Dixon got the opportunity to play before Trimble.
If he can contribute from here on it will be games like the Geo game when Simon and Clark can't throw the ball in the ocean and Trimble can be substituted to try to get one of them straightened out by sitting awhile and by having Trimble provide some offense.

This win was very nice news to wake up to. I hope they can keep it going.
