(POST GAME ) #16 Arizona (Chase Ctr), Sat. Dec. 21, 10p, ESPN-2, 970 WNYW
Walton can be entertaining — including some of his off-the wall comments last night, e.g., “Were you ever in a prison ship off the shore of London?”

With that said, I find that he can be extremely irritating, which is made worse when your team is going through a rough patch. Was I the only one who was annoyed by the never ending discussion with Al Attles at the beginning of the second half — when Arizona was making a dent to our league?!

Sorry, not meaning to sound negative, especially after such a gutsy, incredible performance!
He should have talked w Attlee during halftime. It really annoyed me that he was interviewing him during the 2nd half.

Al Attles was a helluva role player and a helluva coach for the Warriors. He richly deserved the honors he got last night.

10-8 in BE
Anderson best coach since Louie
When he gets couple years to recruit to fit his style.....
Listening to Walton was like watching game with senile grandfather who won’t shut up whole game and keeps talking about people he knew 35 years ago for no reason

I don't even think we need 10-8...we have shockingly done so much already with no bad losses, 11 wins, and 2 of them against top 25 teams. 9-9 would still probably get us in. A win against Butler and we are in the top 25. This is what it feels like to be relevant nationally. I'm soaking this in as much as I can. The crazy thing is that this is the beginning of year #1 under CMA and all this has happened already. Gone are the days hibernating through 3 years then being excited every 4th year of a new coach to even have a chance at maybe making the tourney as our high water mark. Gone are the days of expecting to be embarrassed by top 25 teams OOC and getting used to it. There were Arizona fans on their forum predicting a 30 pt blowout. Well, it's over guys. The giant might just be waking up from a long slumber and stretching his arms yawning. This should have a tremendous impact on recruiting...he has real tangible results to show them and all this in year 1. Incredible. Soak this moment in, because we have been starving.

The game was one of a quadruple header of the Al Attles Invitational. It was a nationally televised game. Not all viewers are interested in what Nick Rutherford had for lunch not to mention I doubt Walton dictates ESPN's halftime schedule when about 13 of the 15 minutes are commercials.

Predicted Caraher would start when Heron got hurt
That more impressive than my resurrection
10-8
Remember it in case I do meet my untimely demise in three way gone wrong

Walton has always been a off the grid ,California type of guy . Grateful Dead and all that . But , he’s got a off beat type of personality and style . He has some good anecdotes and stories but , he often drifts from the Game he’s doing, which can be distracting to say the least ., He does know Basketball for sure . And , during his day was one of the best College Basketball Players ever ! He had injuries for a lot of his Pro Career but , no denying he had game . As we know , West Coast guys often don’t wear well with those of us in the East but , Walton can be entertaining if he sticks to the game .
Walton is basically the crazy uncle at a family get together when you cringe at what he might say.

That being said I'd be happy if he did every one of our games if it's the same result as last night
He sure did praise us a lot. So much so that he sounded like a St. John’s homer

While stats are important, every single one of these kids do things that don’t appear in the box score. Especially on the defense end. For instance, Sears’ numbers last night did not tell the whole story of his contribution. On a number of occasions, at least a couple of times towards the tail end of the game, he slid over on defense and prevented a drive to the hoop and a likely basket. We outfought Zona for a number of loose balls. These are the kind of things these kids do that help us win but don’t appear in the box score.

Reopened guess we get to stay up later.
Still not sure why we need 3 threads for each game.

It's more organized IMO having 3 game threads. It's much easier to read through everything if you don't frequent the forums often.
I was at the game last night sitting 5 rows behind the St. John’s bench, amongst mostly Az fans. There was a St Mary’s fan next to me who was amazed at how good we played. When I told him that Heron was one of our best players he couldn’t believe that we were so dominant in the first half. Towards the end of the game he was rooting for the Johnnies along with me. This was the first California win for me after 4 losses over the last 10 years (UCLA, St Mary’s, San Francisco, Az State).
Should have come to Pauley in '03. ;)

This team is reminding me more and more of Mahoney and Lavins first year - a bunch of role players being utilized correctly and busting their tails for their new coach. It’s really a joy to see.

Agree that it’s more organized and easier to navigate posts. Don’t mind ending the pre-game thread and starting a game thread. Don’t like ending the game thread, especially after a huge game like Saturday while we’re all still analyzing the game and reveling in the W. Nice to be able to quote others’ posts. Just my 2 cents, no disrespect to Paul and the mods.

Agree, I wouldn't mind having the game thread open after the final buzzer. It lets everybody soak in what happened and contribute.

When the buzzer goes off, it feels a little to much like “last call” on the board. And I hate “last call” almost as much as my buddy Mike Maher lol.

I look at rebounds and TOs for each game. This is the 1st year that SJU is out rebounding its opponents that I can ever remember. It also reinforces that the team that tries harder will generally out rebound the opponent. Impressive to out rebound a big Arizona team. It's kinda obvious but out rebounding and fewer turnovers results in more opportunities than the opponent to score.
SJU took an extra 12 shots from the floor and 1 extra foul shot.

Walton can be entertaining at times, but when he's not, I cut him some slack beccause when he was healthy -- as he was during the 1976-77 championship year-- he was as good an all-around center as I ever saw. Loved his game.
