(POST GAME ) #16 Arizona (Chase Ctr), Sat. Dec. 21, 10p, ESPN-2, 970 WNYW

Walton is basically the crazy uncle at a family get together when you cringe at what he might say.

That being said I'd be happy if he did every one of our games if it's the same result as last night
I am still in shock. This is one of those things that screams, "NOT business as usual". This is not common territory for us at least in modern times. If St. John's gets to 9-9 or better in conference play, we are in the NCAA tournament and may not even have to win a BET game. Two top 25 wins...WVU and Arizona which is about as good an OOC performance at 11-2 with no bad losses as almost anyone.

I used to be one of those coaching doesn't matter it's all the players kinda guy. But the more college hoops I watched, I realized coaching matters a ton. This is a better team than last year and who in their right minds would've EVER thought that going into this season? Cragg, Anderson, etc. have been absolute godsends for this program. Finally, the correct levers have been pulled. By the way I'm not expecting an NCAA berth still, but it's very much within reach if we maintain this intensity and defense. This will be a season to remember for a long time. What a win...and now we get to soak it in for a little while. On a Saturday no less...remember we used to dread Saturday games? We lose this by 25 last year. Night and day. Great kids, great coaching, great program right now. We need the fans to show up. Time to come out and show up. They're for real.
But Seton Hall needs to win 11 conference games and two games in the Big East tournament to have a chance. Lol

Adding to the amazing victory is that Arizona had a full week to prepare for us after a loss and had a short flight compared to our team that had cross country flight on Thursday morning and played in a game that started at 10PM on their "biological clock". As a number of us complained about being tired/sleeping during the game in our easy chairs. Miller did not do enough to get them ready as they looked unprepared for our team.

Butler has a lot of time to get ready. It will be interesting to see how they react. to CMA's team approach.

I am one of the few that gets a kick out of Walton on a limited basis. By limited, I mean once a year and early in the season. Some of the lines were classic. I can't remember the line, but the other announcer, in response to Walton's comment about being on, said: "Are you sure that's all you are on". An Arizona player threw up a 3 pointer from the corner that missed the rim by 5 feet, and Walton said "that one just missed". It's hard to know if he was joking or just out of it.

Just great!! One notice because I am a guy who thinks chemistry at this level is way more important that talent on paper - in this “Me” world, Steere, who got all of 4 minutes in his 1st game in a year and a half, and Heron, out with an injury, were as genuinely happy and demonstrative as everyone else. Maybe not a big deal to some but as an ex-coach it is a very revealing indication of the camaraderie and sense of team that has been instilled and bought into by these coaches and players. Truly a joy to see in a program we have all invested a lot of emotion on.
There is a saying in business that, "culture eats strategy for breakfast!"

Couldn't agree more
Never heard that phrase before but so true, thanks for sharing.

Does he look like he will contribute this season?
I think you guys can watch the repeat on ESPN 3. Steere was disappointing IMO and didn’t get much burn, will see how he adjusts to real games.
I’ve read a few comments on here regarding Steere being a “disappointment “. I couldn’t disagree more. Honestly, after the layoff, and against a tall, athletic front line, on a Top 25 team, what did you expect? Kareem numbers?
I find it unfair to the kid to pronounce him as a potential bust after a few minutes of playing time.
Personally, I won’t have an opinion on his potential until he makes it through the Big East schedule, at least once.
I didn’t say he was a bust, I said I was disappointed for first game. I remember Jakaar Sampson’s first game, He looked bad, so can’t take much from it. I also was responding to a posters question on how he looked.

I turn off the sound on all sporting events so I did not hear Walton but I would be willing to bet his comments about Mullin were nothing more than the ballbusting between friends, which they are. He lives tongue in cheek, even used to give Wooden the needle.

Couldn't agree more. I wouldn't want him doing the Final Four or Big East tourney but once in a while on a late game (especially where Johnnies aren't playing so I'm not as invested) Walton cracks me up. Also agree with sentiment expressed that he is a classic bbuster and was almost certainly just giving his friend Chris M. a little all in fun grief.

Their SOS is tougher, but our signature wins are better. We have 2 ranked wins vs. their 1. Just the fact that we will receive votes (even though we should be ranked easily after last night plus WVU) is incredible. I was preparing myself for Mullin's first season getting blown out by D2 and no name D1 teams. To go from expecting that torture and assuming we MAY have something to root for by year 3, to being 11-2, worst losses against a likely NCAA team and ASU and 2 ranked wins is insane. We are doing this with little talent (recruiting wise) outside of LJ and Heron who didn't even play. This is the stuff I always got jealous over watching Butler and Nova. Getting guys who buy in and may not be NBA lottery picks but they are better together than the sum of their parts. Coming out of nowhere and making a case for top 25 ranking and NCAA tourney as of right now. If we beat Butler we are in the top 25 in year ONE of CMA with only 2 impact players or so we thought. Just wait for a game when we compliment our defense with red hot 3 pt shooting from LJ, Heron, Champ, etc. That's the crazy part...we are doing all of this being a very poor shooting team. Our defense is beating top 25 teams.

Hiring a competent coach with the proper work ethic makes a world of difference. Legend or not I believe the University should sue Mullin to recoup the money he essentially stole.

St. John's getting some local recognition--was just in my local Starbucks and the guy who was working there said St. John's played a great game last night".

Walton can be entertaining — including some of his off-the wall comments last night, e.g., “Were you ever in a prison ship off the shore of London?”

With that said, I find that he can be extremely irritating, which is made worse when your team is going through a rough patch. Was I the only one who was annoyed by the never ending discussion with Al Attles at the beginning of the second half — when Arizona was making a dent to our league?!

Sorry, not meaning to sound negative, especially after such a gutsy, incredible performance!

Problem with Walton is that he just drones on and he broadcast partner can't reign him in. They talk crap over the events on the court. Enough already.

Regarding Walton, he did seem to enjoy doing the SJU game and gave us praise, but a little bit does go a long way. I watched some of the UNR-St. Mary's game that followed and he was less entertaining. At least he didn't refer to Caraher as "the shooter."
Regarding Mullin, those of us who watched him play know what he meant to SJU, but his four years as coach were very disappointing and best forgotten.
We have the right AD and coaches now, and it appears we have a good group of kids on the team.
Maybe, just maybe, our long basketball nightmare is finally over.

Even better was when the play by play guy answered "yes". Threw Walton off for about five seconds.

Beating a dead horse here, but we turned off the volume about a minute into the game, when Mrs. OhioFan asked "who is that asshole"?

I was at the game last night sitting 5 rows behind the St. John’s bench, amongst mostly Az fans. There was a St Mary’s fan next to me who was amazed at how good we played. When I told him that Heron was one of our best players he couldn’t believe that we were so dominant in the first half. Towards the end of the game he was rooting for the Johnnies along with me. This was the first California win for me after 4 losses over the last 10 years (UCLA, St Mary’s, San Francisco, Az State).

Add me to the list of people muting the TV. Tried the volume in the second half for a second and he was harping about the electoral college. Good grief!

Who knew, Sears was just waiting for the competition to improve before he stepped up his game. Even knocked down two free throws. Totally changed his routine at the line, actually looks at the basket before shooting now. I think Roberts has the crown as the worst shooter from the foul line now.

Nice the see improvement from so many players just a dozen or so games in. Huge credit to the whole coaching staff for getting it done. Rutherford, Williams, Sears all look like different players than they did a month ago.

Funny to look at it this way, but it's true, LJs underhanded flip ended up being the difference in the game.
