(POST GAME) #10 Creighton, Sun. Mar. 1, Noon, FS-1 / 970 AM WNYM

This is what it looks like when you close teams out. Much better rhythm today playing at CA where they practice everyday. No I don’t expect 14 three pointers every game, but when they are in rhythm like they were, we are capable of hitting 7-9 per game.

I think Roberts is going to have a hard time finding time for the rest of the year. The way we spread the court out and probed and got to the hole because we had shooting threats out there opened up the floor. It’s hard having him and Rutherford out there because neither are outside threats foreal. And the way we switched on defense and made it uncomfortable out on the perimeter looked really good. That’s how a vintage Mike Anderson team looks and closes. It’s like they sensed the blood in the water for a change.

Huge game for Greg to go off and gain even more confidence to close the year and go into the offeseason. Let’s get after Butler and roll the dice!

Great effort by the team today. Thrilled for GW having that moment as he has worked so hard and remained positive. The only negative was watching the game on my phone as the Charlotte 49ers completed a weekend sweep of our baseball team.

What made this win so amazing is the fact that we had only 8 scholarship players available but 7 of them would not start on any other Big East team.
THAT is a tribute to both the players and coaches. Especially the coaches because the players we lost were high rated in both Steere and Heron. While Roberts is not in that category his absence left us as the smallest team in the league. Good coaching finds a way to prepare and motivate the players to have available.

Photo credit goes to NYCRedmen. Just had to repost. When considering these two, Champagnie (in the background of one pic looking happy), a nice recruiting class, and a staff that develops players.......I think the future is bright.

Side note.......we survived Mike Stephens, one of the all-time worst zebras, today.

Had a great day at CA as was witness to two SJU romps. The men by 20 and the women by 37.
The "Heat" of CA takes another victim--it is our Home Court Advantage to teams that play short bench. Creighton fought back to go ahead by 2 at the 13 minute mark but then they wilted. The Heat at CA is a factor of crowd size-the more of us the hotter the arena. I was actually sitting there and felt the cold during the women's game.
Great defense by team shutting off Creighton's excellent 3 point shooting, Great play by our entire team-including Greg's deadeye, Dunn's double double and LJ's double double plus 5 assists. As to LJ--he got his minutes, second on the team with 31.

Great coaching by CMA including resting his limited bench and putting in Cole in first half and getting a basket from him and getting 11 minutes out of sears.
The starting 5 plus Sears were courtside to support the women's team; great school spirit. Sears will be back unless he wants to transfer as he has accepted a leadership mantle while being on the bench, one could see he is liked by his younger teammates and he is always ready with a positive attitude.
Josh Roberts injury is a concern. Mike said it was his shoulder (press conference).

Don't see any updates yet. I sure hope Josh is ok and can finish the season.

I see Justin Cole (walk on) got 4 minutes. A big moment for him and he scored 2 points.

The bench is kind of thin. The Johnnies can't afford to lose Roberts.
And Cole’s points were not at garbage time but during a nice run we had in the first half. He first harassed a Creighton ball handler and forced a loose ball that we recovered. And the next possession or so, he hits a nice short jumper. Bench was huge today. Rutherford even hit a big 3 in the second half.

Who were does masked men pretending to be St. John's shooters? 14 for 22 from three. Williams 7 for 10 Wow.

Defense showed up holding Creighton to 71 points. Zegarowski 5 pts., and Ballock only 3.

A real team effort scoring wise - can't complain about Fiqueroa's game 16 pts., 5 assists 12 boards.and 3 for 4 from behind the 3 pt line.

And although most fans expect and want Caraher to leave next year, I don't. Coach Anderson gives him enough playing time.

I thought we allowed too many points in the paint, 27 out of .the 36 scored in the first half.
Great atmosphere at CA today...Kids fed off of it...putting aside the numerous backdoors/give-and-gos we gave up early...we really played tough defense and made them work...this is significant in that we didn’t turn them over much...so, a very good sign that we don’t have to be a one trick pony.

Light must have gone on for Williams past 2 games as he seems to have realized that he is auditioning for big role next year. Stepped up big. Love to see this kid play with confidence.

Dunn - I am repeating myself...kid is a warrior...Elite defender, Elite Speed, Elite Motor...if he gets some instruction and does the reps re: perimeter shooting sufficient to get him from 38% to 43% watch out! Love how he has come down court in past 2 games intent on imposing his will on 2 bigger, albeit less athletic, guards, backing them down and scoring.Very few, if any, guards in BE can stay in front of him.

Champagnie gaining confidence on his jumper. Just needs to bang a bit more on the defensive boards. Good rebounder who can be even better.

Earlington, despite foul trouble, found way to contribute.

LJ played more within the flow. Do believe he is getting frustrated with getting pulled and sitting more. Seemed to be sulking when re-entering game late.
Agree we gave up too many easy baskets in the paint a lot due to Creighton's breaking our press and beating us up court. Nice to have a coach who can adjust.

One other note about Dunn, the kid was reveling in the accomplishments of his teammates(as they all were). When Caraher hit that jumper and got fouled, no one was more thrilled then Dunn. Gotta love the intensity and heart on that kid, as well as all the kids.

I have 6 words to say: Abandon the ‘beer and piss arena’. It’s the main reason SJU can’t win a home game. Bad enough they’re forced to play the BET there (where they always lose first or second round). The garden is nothing but THE CURSE OF THE WOEFUL KNICKS!!! Carnesecca Arena forever!!!!!!!
I’m sorry but I can’t get behind this. I’ve seen too many wins at the Garden (of course, back in the day) against the likes of Duke, Pitt, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, etc that when we’re good, that Arena is ours and it should always be ours. When this whole thing finally turns around and we’re winning 20-plus games a season the Garden will be an asset and you know kids want to win on one of the greatest stages in all of sports. This city always gets behind a winner and when we become a winner, the Garden will rock in red.
Agree. I always felt we would beat any team at the garden. Not only do the kids want to win there but it was our big recruiting opportunity. You would have to had been there in the past. I remember the chants at Bronco Charlies before we played Cuse. it's the garden for me.
Rebounds & assists are so important in this win. They setup many of the points that were made.
LJ Figueroa lead with 12 R 5 A 16 points wow!
Dunn 6 R 10 A 19 points awesome!
Champagnie 5 R 0 A 13 points
Caraher 4 R 1 A 9 points good job from the bench
Williams 4 R 2 A 21 points,. Incredible shooting!
Amazing what happens when you get a little help from the bench ( Caraher - finally ) and Williams ( just the beginning ) and even Sears .

Yesterday's attendance reported at 4,260.

Is anyone else really annoyed that our win yesterday is causing the local media to give Seton Hall praise for clinching a share of the regular season title?

To the Media and Seton Hall, don't thank us. We didn't win yesterday for you. Congrats, but SJU doesn't care. Let us enjoy our moment of winning, without mentioning another local program and their accomplishment.

Not sure if it was already mentioned, but the lines to get into the building yesterday were pathetic. Multiple doors sat locked while hundreds of people piled into two entrances. I got on line to get in at 11:50 and missed the opening tip.

I may have missed it, but did anyone read about any recruits present at yesterday's game? Hoping for obvious reasons.

Glad you're mentioning it. The entrance/security process is pathetic. And surely something for Mr. Cragg to work on in the off-season. I've stood on those unnecessary lines in the rain. Open more doors, buy one or two more security gates. MSG does it flawlessly with 18k people.

A lot to do with our location. When MSG is packed the entrance lines are very long also. Interesting, though, at Villanova you didn't have to go through metal detectors or a bag check. It was really great not to have to do that.
