(POST GAME) #10 Creighton, Sun. Mar. 1, Noon, FS-1 / 970 AM WNYM
Just a friendly note for Knight: you may want to edit the score in the first post on this thread. it shows Creighton winning 91-71. We all know better, but I did a double-take when I first saw it... ;)
While I appreciate Knight doing this,
He’s made that mistake before. I think it was the first Creighton game. I was so happy thinking we had one and later found out we had lost.

Great atmosphere at CA today...Kids fed off of it...putting aside the numerous backdoors/give-and-gos we gave up early...we really played tough defense and made them work...this is significant in that we didn’t turn them over much...so, a very good sign that we don’t have to be a one trick pony.

Light must have gone on for Williams past 2 games as he seems to have realized that he is auditioning for big role next year. Stepped up big. Love to see this kid play with confidence.

Dunn - I am repeating myself...kid is a warrior...Elite defender, Elite Speed, Elite Motor...if he gets some instruction and does the reps re: perimeter shooting sufficient to get him from 38% to 43% watch out! Love how he has come down court in past 2 games intent on imposing his will on 2 bigger, albeit less athletic, guards, backing them down and scoring.Very few, if any, guards in BE can stay in front of him.

Champagnie gaining confidence on his jumper. Just needs to bang a bit more on the defensive boards. Good rebounder who can be even better.

Earlington, despite foul trouble, found way to contribute.

LJ played more within the flow. Do believe he is getting frustrated with getting pulled and sitting more. Seemed to be sulking when re-entering game late.

One additional note...

All time great Johnnie, George Johnson, was at game...Can’t believe he, and some others, do not have their number up in rafters — and very disappointed that he was not acknowledged at game.

He is helping Gordie Thomas coach at Amityville.

I know everyone is feeling good after the win. However, we have had a few wins in the past few years (like Villanova a couple of times, Seton Hall, heck this year we even beat West Va) and then came crashing back to earth. Here’s hoping we can win another regular season game Or two and possibly get a W in the Big East Tournament.

There were a couple of mentions that this win was the first wnn vs a top ten team by SJU at CA since they beat Tenn in 1975. In the 84-85 season they beat De Paul in a nationally televised game with Al McGuire announcing at CA. Does anybody remember if they were top ten. They had a great team.

Josh Roberts injury is a concern. Mike said it was his shoulder (press conference).

Don't see any updates yet. I sure hope Josh is ok and can finish the season.

I see Justin Cole (walk on) got 4 minutes. A big moment for him and he scored 2 points.

The bench is kind of thin. The Johnnies can't afford to lose Roberts.

DePaul had spent the first 3 months of the 84-85 season in the top 10, but lost 4 of 6 and fell out of the rankings going into our game.

The camera switched to Louie enjoying the win against Creighton. It's even more special they were in Carnesecca Arena.

I'm surprised Louie's better teams weren't winning against the top ten teams at Alumni Hall (CA).

One thing about St. John's this century: too many players failed to match hype and the few who did left early for the pros, w/mostly negative results.

Gregg Williams is different.

Under-the-radar, slowly blossoming and poised to be a key 3rd/4th year player.

Nice change.
I’ll go a little further and say it has become clear who on roster may not be coming back and who shouldn’t. I think at this point both Greg Williams and Caraher should come back and probably will. Both are developing their roles. Champagnie is obvious as is Earlington. Roberts is developing as well and I hope happy with where he’s at. I think at this point, only Steere and Sears are likely to be gone. That would leave us with only one more ship presumably.

Honestly we have only played a handful of games at Alumni Hall against top 10 teams.

Actually February 28, 1987 was our last top 10 win (76-74) at Alumni Hall, against #9 Pittsburgh. Senior night for Mark Jackson and Willie Glass.

I wondered if the games against 10 ten teams were at MSG instead of Alumni Hall.

That explains the 1975 record the announcers mentioned today.

The 1975 game against #7 Tennessee was at Alumni Hall (now Carnesecca)

SJU played a great Louisvile team when Reggie Carter was playing at CA. Louisville was a top three team I'm sure but SJU lost that game to Darrell Griffith who has to be one of the greatest players to ever play at CA.

Nice win today. Absolutely awesome game for G Williams. They played hard all season but had troubles closing teams out so this felt good. Multiple nails in Creightons coffin. I am still optimistic about our future. This feels like trending upward and out of 20 years of misery. I said it before but hope MA stays around a long while.

60 Minutes sports cut-in, and Greg Gumbel starts with “St.John’s upsets #10 Creighton....”. Gotta love the national attention this win is giving us. Also was first score reported at halftime of Mich-Ohio State

Roberts needs a lot of work! He is lagging way behind the others in development. I think his starting days are over.

missed the game and was shocked when I checked ESPN.

While one game does not a trend, excited that both Williams and Caraher looked for their shots, about time!

I'll share with you how much I know...

I was telling a table at the 1870 before the game that we had no shot today since Creighton is the best coached team in the conference and that we wouldn't be able to force turnovers.

Well, all I can say now is...the crow could've used more garlic. :)

Great job by the kids today. They deserved this as they have hung in there all season and never stopped giving their all. Hope they all have a chance to enjoy it tonight before turning their attention to Butler.

Couldn't watch game, checked score later and figured it was reversed. Looked closer and saw we were the ones who won by 20 lol...jeez nice win by the guys! This is the exact type of game Mullin would've lost by 30. Season well over in terms of NCAA hopes and the team just sulks and quits. Instead, the kids fought and again this is without Heron a major starter. Beating a top 10 team...very impressive. Of course I realize today was an outlier and next game they won't virtually all go in, but just goes to show what we can be if we get some shooters and improve shooting for guys who are here already. Playing hard defense and also making shots gives you a real shot against anyone. Right now at 15-14 it doesn't seem nearly as bad in a rebuilding year when you consider we beat #10 Creighton, #12 WVU (believe that's the highest they got), and #13 Arizona (I believe). So basically beating 3 teams who were around or in the top 10 at any point in the season. Ranked wins don't seem impossible anymore. I still have my concerns of course, but games like this make me think maybe just maybe CMA is different. Maybe he can get us back to at least regular tourney appearances. Very happy for kids and staff and of course us the fans!

Even Sears made a contribution today.
