For the past month I was hoping that Pitino to SJU would become one of the worst kept secrets in CBB circles by this time of the year. I'm ecstatic that it seems to have actually happened.
I have no inside info, but this has to be 99% done just based on all the circumstantial evidence.
- Pitino has been subtly dropping hints over the past year+ that he'd want this job and more recently of much he hates the one-bid league he's currently in and how he wants to make one more big splash before he's done.
- All of the media attention surrounding Pitino to SJU over the past 24-48 hours that has leaked. Usually there's not this much smoke without fire from both local and national CBB guys unless it's pretty much a done deal.
- The buzz that has generated from these leaks puts Shanley and SJU in a position where if it somehow falls through it will look worse now than it did during the last search.
- The fact that Shanley has been working on this for a couple weeks and it's perceived to being close to done makes me think that if it wasn't gonna happen it would have fallen through long before the "significant mutual interest" became public.
Georgetown either wasn't interested in Pitino or know they couldn't beat SJU for him. Pitino isn't moving to Lubbock. Maybe Texas throws a wrench into things but they've been open for a while and mutual interest would have likely been reported by now for them if there was any.
At this point, Pitino not ending up as coach here would end up as the school's biggest blunder in half a century and the biggest failure of Shanley's career. It just has to happen now.
