Possible Coaching Candidates

I don't hate Brey as much as other posters -- I think we could do worse -- but this is not nearly the splash we need to make. I don't hate Cragg, but he's probably got to go if he legitimately thinks Brey should be in the top 5.

If Brey is the next StJ’s head coach he will be hired because choices #1 through many have declined an interview or declined the StJ’s job.

The hard cold reality is that St.J’s will not offer a premium salary and is considered by many coaches as a career killer. If you believe that StJ’s is an attractive position than please google to the long line of people who turned down the StJ’s job during the past searches (Is. UMBC coach declined in 2019).

I don't need to google anything -- I was on this site four years ago.

I believe this is a better job than you think it is, and if Brey ends up as coach, while I think it means some guys said no, it also means that we didn't put guys who should be ahead of Brey higher than him on the list. And that would fall squarely on the AD.

Otis, it seems to me that CMA makes a salary comparable to most, if not all, of the other big east coaches. So I would consider that a "premium salary". Why do you think SJU won't offer a new coach at least as much as they're paying CMA?

Good article, I am assuming Fraschilla has far better sources regarding the SJU situation than most (if not all) people on this board.
Or, he is still persona non grata around SJU and he was caught with his pants down and made things up.

The poster you are referring to literally re-writes the same post every 3-4 days.

The SJU job sucks, they can't pay anybody and no one wanted the job before.

BTW-I don't think it will be Brey but assume for a second Brey is the next coach, he is not doing it for peanuts. He would demand $3 mil+ so this idea that SJU would hire Brey only on the cheap is nonsense.

Exactly. If SJU hires someone like Brey for $3 million a year, it throws the entire theory that the school cannot afford to pay good money on a coach.

Fran F:

“Why does Villanova, Xavier, Dayton, Gonzaga and Creighton get it, and some other Catholic schools don’t? I have always wondered that,” Fraschilla said. “Oftentimes it’s leadership and it’s a commitment to say that we want basketball to be the front porch of the university.

“Not the most important part of the university, but the part that people see first. That was the case for many, many decades, and unfortunately it’s not the case right now. … I just think there has to be more of a commitment to incredible facilities.”

He is correct which is why this time Father Shanley is the X factor vs past presidents this time.

There are legitimate questions about how desireable the SJU job is nationally. I don't deny that.

But keep in mind many of these posters arguing SJU does not have the $$$ to pay a good coach are the same one's who argued that SJU was unlikely to fire Mike Anderson because of his large buyout. They seemed to have quietly moved on from that without actually admitting they were wrong.
