Possible Coaching Candidates

After losing at home to Northwestern tonight, Ohio State fans are about as finished with Holtmann as we are with CMA. Haven’t thought his job was even close to being in danger until now. Ohio State has some super high expectations for their program and the fans are fed up with Holtmann. Interesting to see if tOSU makes a move on him or if he tries to skip town before he gets run out. Could see Notre Dame making a play for him if he’s looking to get out.
He has a Top 10 (#10) recruiting class coming in next year according to Rivals. Will be interesting to see what they do with him.

Why would we Holtmann? osu is 3-10 in conf - Guess he'd be perfect for SJU.
This Is Chris Collind only good season, no ty.
Bobby Hurley? Nah
I don’t think Holtmann will be an option but prior to this year he won 20+ games each year and made the tournament each year. He has a Top #10 recruiting class coming in next year so they should be much better next year. The knock on him is that his team usually gets knocked out early in the NCAA Tournament.

The case you are making is a reasonable case that does not mean Ohio St and its fan base are reasonable. All things being equal I think he returns to Columbus but stranger things have happened. And if he somehow pulls a Shaka Smart and decides to "voluntarily" leave with no OSU resistance he would be right behind Pitino as choice number 1A for me.

Unlike previous coaching searches, this program does not need a total rebuild. Plus, with the transfer rules, filling roster holes is not a 2 or 3 year project. If Pitino isn't the guy, then we need a coach that is capable of convincing Storr, Gardner, Posh and Yaxel to stay put, and add a few quality shooters from the portal. I doubt Soriano stays, as an extra year won't make him a NBA player, or enhance his value overseas. So mabye a serviceable big from the portal is another need for the new coach.

Oliva the major hurdle in the Pitino pursuit?
I would have interest in Claxton and Grasso as secondary candidates.

I believe he also signed an extension last year. A big state school with big time football has an easier time eating a large buy out compared to St. John’s though.

Sopranos episode, "The Weight"...Ralph made a joke about Ginny Sac's fat ass and Johnny wanted Ralph clipped over it. Carmine refused because too much money was involved. Johnny couldn't let it go, eventually Carmine put a hit on Johnny Sac, his under boss. Eventually Johnny Sac accepted Ralph's apology and cooler heads prevailed.

Moral of the story...what entity is more important to St Johns present and future? Is it the Men's Basketball Team, which provides the revenue to pay for all the other sports combined? And, is a free promotion for the university whenever a game is aired? Or, a lifetime administrator who does what again?

Again, did Holtmann suddenly start not being able to coach? Once a team smells some success, the fan bases expect it every year. I think coaches like Wright, Coach K and others are legendary and unicorns. The problem with CMA that I have now come to grips with is that the team really did not improve during his time. That said, he does get some kudos in helping to develop Champ, Wheeler and Soriano.

I think if SJU does make a change, they may look no further than Van Macon, and bring in an older, experienced main assistant coach.

Id like to see Grasso have some sustained success at his level before giving him a serious look. Both Langel and Jones have sustained success.

I think Grasso has been mentioned here in some capacity for so long that his name is now just thought of as a good coach. Not a bad one, but really hasn’t dont much to be considered for a High Major job IMO. I’m gonna continue to call us a High Major job for as long as I can.

I just don't get the fascination with Grasso. He's had one excellent year in the Northeast Conference and finished near the bottom of that lackluster league 2 of his 4 full seasons there. Hard pass for me.
Built a program from the bottom. Played the transfer game well.

St. Johns needs a Big Splash hire. The program is dead, no interest, not thought about, considered worthless by many casual fans. The last big splash hire we had was Steve Lavin. The Johnnies were the hot school and Lavin brought in the recruits.

It would seen to me that the only coach out there to provide that splash now is Rick P. The school has a chance to rectify all the dumb ass idiotic mistakes its made over the decades with one simple hire. If they don't get this guy, the school may fade away into the shadow of mediocrity forever.
Point of Order ,

Why does this guy Oliva have so influence?? This guy seems to be a disaster when it comes to making decisions for the basketball program. Can’t Shanley and Cragg just tell him to sit down and shut up and let them handle it?

I’m not a fan of firing a coach in season. But, if Van Macon is the road they’re going to travel , then let CMA go now and let Macon take over. Macon would be able to probably keep the guys we need to keep plus incoming recruits. Then maybe he brings in a guy like Arbitiello as an assistant coach. Then Shoes stay’s also. I don’t know if the fan base will accept that move but it could work. Van is very well liked in all circles from what has been said.

I like Van Macon a lot. Just not sure he's what this program needs right now, which in my opinion is a salesman who is going to drive NIL opportunities.

MG, there is absolutely no way Cragg and Shanley are going to let CMA go before the season ends. Nor does he deserve that, imho.

Sounds good, and yeah they should be much better next year, but they're 3-11 this year.
You can't just throw this year away.
