Porter Moser

Moose,

I hear you but I think for half a second Temple was in the Big East for basketball, before the Catholic 7 divorced from the football schools, also Rutgers and Seton Hall co-existed in Big East Basketball for years.

Wouldn't it be nice to have DePaul vs Loyola 2 times a year, plus maybe a head to head in BET. They are strong Big East candidate IMO. I would also add Dayton and St. Louis.
Mike Zaun wrote:If Loyola didn't give Moser a big raise then the joke's on him. He makes $420k at Loyola a no name school in a no name conference. He could've gone from $420k to $2 mil a year. The guy is an idiot. Money goes no further in Chicago than it does here, so that argument won't hold water. I can see with Hurley living in AZ but not this time. Huge raise and a huge promotion and step up to a big boy power conference with brand name schools and the biggest arenas on national TV. Have fun! He has proven zero aside from a miracle run that will never come close again.

My understanding is he makes closer to $900,000, which is plenty to live well on, and not everything in life is about money. He's got 4 teenage kids and long standing ties to the area. I think he had a tough choice and chose to stay where he was for the reasons people with family and community ties sometimes do when offered a job upgrade that requires uprooting one's family. All indications are he is a solid coach and a solid human being. Time to move on and get a coach.
It's just odd...we always say in college hoops money talks but for us people don't want any part even with massive raises. We operate as an exception in college basketball. We are also one of the only areas (NYC metro) where almost all the top recruits leave the area. Elsewhere they seem to stay home much more often. We have a lot more resources and a bigger brand than many imply...I think the terrible decisions and the negative press has taken its toll however. Still surprised there aren't more lining up for this job. It definitely takes a special guy who is gritty. Someone who is real and not a diva.

'You can be rich without the dollar signs' -Moser

Do we have any guys who say this? Mullin? Richmond? Matt A? Why are we never the one where money is not an issue and doesn't make and break deals?

The only people on this site who will be openly missing Mullin if this continues for a few weeks are those who thought he was doing a good job.

Everyone else has already written off their opinions because anyone who thinks he was doing a good job clearly can't get past their hero worship of him to see the plain facts in front of their faces. They can feel free to carry on. Nobody else cares.

No one can say they're not disappointed in the results over the past four years. Mullin will be missed. Why? For one, the positive vibe. Maybe more important, I was looking forward with the new kids coming in to a 23-25 win season. It might have happened. Now we're looking forward to a single digit win season and a limp rebuild by a mid major coach.

Put a mirror under St John's Basketball's nose. There's no steam. We're dead.

If you seriously thought there was a real possibility of 23+ or even 20+ wins next year if Mullin stayed with everyone that's just silly IMO. We were the last team in the tourney and collapsed down the stretch going 8-10 in conference play with arguably the most talent we've had since the late 90's. That was in a down year for the conference too with a very easy OOC schedule. Next year the Big East is going to be much better. There was no reason to expect anything remotely in that area if they all stayed onboard. Go by record and results which are objective...not emotions which are subjective.

My thought was that we were probably going to finish in last place in the BE in the upcoming season before the players started leaving. Now it is just about a sure thing that we finish last. I believe the focus in hiring a new coach should be on building the program long term. It should not be about salvaging next season.

FAN this morning

Gio: crazy to go to 8 years with this guy what if it stinks and you end up eating 5-6 years for nothing. If I'm Cluess I tell them no thanks,

Boomer: this is a tough job because recruiting to Queens is a tough sell, they are going to have a hard time finding someone.

Not silly at all. If you think we're building for the long-term, you haven't followed the program much. It really doesn't matter. St John;'s is routinely handed the keys to this city on a silver platter over other locals...and we always act like we don't care. New York's team? Get outta here.

I don't disagree with your assessment of where we are as a program, except to say that we are only "mostly dead".
Even so...when have we ever been more than a program looking to a Mid Major coach for a major rebuild?

We replaced Lou with his assistant Mahoney.
Mahoney flopped and we went for Fraschilla (a MM HC).
Fraschilla messed up and we hired Jarvis (a MM HC) over Jay Wright (another MM HC)
We replaced Jarvis with Norm, who wasn't even a MM HC. He was an assistant.
Lavin followed Norm as the only big name, we've hired with high DI coaching experience.
Mullin followed Lavin and he had ZERO HC or AC experience on any level.

Our fans, especially our older fans, need a reality check.

* This isn't an attractive job. When this site started we were the 3rd winingest program in the sports history. Now we are 9th. Do people realize how bad you have to suck for two decades to drop 6 spots on a list that counts wins from over a century ago?

* We don't have the financial resources or the huge list of wealthy boosters to compete with other state and private schools.

* Our facilities suck

We need to put the fantasy of a Pitino or Lavin or Donovan away for good and get back to our roots. We need a local guy with a track record of success who WANTS this job for life and is willing to work his ass off. Anything else is doomed to fail for different reasons.

I couldn't agree more. That's why l'd like us to leave the BE for a lesser conference where we can better compete. Winning in the Big East is no more than a pipe dream. Let's get real.

Might as well just hire Naclerio at this point.

If they hired Moser for 8 years and 2.1 million per, I would have pulled my donations to the AD. If they have that kind of money to throw around on a Moser, and are so convinced he would be successful that they offered him an unprecedented 8 year deal, then my money is best suited to go elsewhere.

I can't believe the talk on here of leaving the Big East, or dropping down to the A-10 or lower, honestly I brought that up during the dark days of Norm Roberts I'll admit but was wisely told on here (good luck seeing your beloved Redmen on TV)!!! I snapped out of that thought process real quick.

We were one of 4 Big East teams to make the NCAA's this year. Attendance was up, interest is up from the Norm era, this is not 2009.

The program as chaotic as it is now is better off than it was 10 years ago Lavin and Chris to their credit generated more fan interest, there is a semblance of a foundation although its falling apart fast.

The longer this drags out the worse it will get, they need to get Cluess now and end this misery, do not lose what you already have

Moser might have been the best coach we have had in a very long time. Compare him in all categories to what we have had here.....

Basketball knowledge
Hungriness
Respectability

He would have been an upgrade over Mullin, Lavin, Norm and Jarvis for sure. So, I am not sure why the disdain for Moser. I predict he has another good year at Loyola and leaves them for an even better job.

Regarding donations, I was more bother when we had coaches with lousy work ethics.

Way better than the coach you currently have

Johnny Fan, other than you and Oliva, no one else who has attended games wanted him.
Hell, I am trying to find out where to send a thank you card to him.

Totally agree with you on Moser, JF.
Guys, maybe understandably, got hung up on his losing years at IL State and his early struggles reviving Loyola, but he has honed his skills and he’ll continue to succeed with the Ramblers/Wolfpack (Loyola employs a ‘wolf’ in its logo as well) and then he may well be slotted into the DePaul slot, or even Creighton, or Marquette, down the road, or elsewhere.
Lots of high major jobs in the Midwest .
He’ll be sought after, no doubt imo.

That maybe. But, when you consider the pool of viable candidates, I think he was a solid choice.

In the end, he didn't accept the job offer, so on to the next.
