Ponds
Speculation is all this Board has to offer right now . I guess its cool to think Ponds does this or Ponds does that . From a Basketball Perspective , the NBA Scouts are saying he isn’t ready . For a 19 or 20 Year old to go against what the Pros are telling him will not result in a good outcome for Shamorie . Too many kids have made these irrevocable decesions and it hasnt panned out well for them . Ponds could have a Monster year , improve his weaknesses and showcase his splendid talent . The difficult reality for Shamorie to deal with is , he is 6’1” tops and maybe 180 . He has a smallish frame that is not likely to benefit from bulking up or adding weight . That is a fact . What can turn the Scouts around is a big year for him here . He has the game to make a lot of defenders look foolish and has proven it , against some of the best players in the Country . Big or small . Listen to your Pops, Shamorie and show them next Year what you can do ! Don’t take the crumbs of the G League or , Europe. You are better than that . And , you can add to a already hefty legacy here at St John’s .
Great post Sly.
But it’s tough for a 19 yr old kid to acknowledge that reality and defer his dreams no matter how long the odds.
Let’s hope he makes the best decision for ‘him’.
We’ll know by tomorrow.
Que sera sera.
Let’s hope.

One thing I've realized is that logic is definitely not often used in these situations unfortunately. They pick up an NBA jersey and the rest is history.

Here’s to tomorrow. No sense worrying about this. Doubt staff losing sleep, so time to relax.

Agree Paultz.
One thing this staff NEVER does is lose sleep.
Ugh.... well if he does go I really hope he is drafted in the second round at a minimum... I haven't seen him mentioned in any second round mock up drafts, and if the second round isn't a 100% guarantee then I wouldn't understand him leaving.
Team Slick knows that he will never be a first round draft pick and also knows, based upon the 2019 first round mock draft he will be in roughly the same position next year. In Shamorie Ponds case it really comes down to whether he wants to have to take classes and study rather than play ball 24/7.

Except that I saw a mock draft for 2019 that had him as a late first rounder. I absolutely think he can improve enough that he comes a first round pick in a weak draft. Kid's gotta do what the kid wants to do at the end of the day and I'll always root for him, but I don't necessarily agree that he couldn't play himself into the first round next year.

Right, even NBADraft.net has had him as a second round pick for next year. He can obviously play his way higher like kids always do. To me, it's a gamble of playing his way into the first round next year, vs playing his way through the G league into the NBA. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that G league route doesn't have a precendent of being a success story for many.

Per DeAndre Mitchell: "Looks like Shamorie Ponds will go to the wire on his draft decision. According to a scout, his evaluations are improving & likely will stay in the draft".

This is nothing against any of these kids and what's best for their own personal situation, but as a fan I get frustrated watching some of our best players leave as underclassmen, knowing that they have no shot of getting drafted. Maybe it's selfish, but if the NBA is truly the dream, use the college experience to play your way into becoming NBA material.

I'm still burned a bit by JaKarr Sampson, who had the same situation after his sophomore year that Shamorie is about to go through. It was obvious he wasn't going to get drafted. Now Sampson has been able to bounce around the league a bit, seeming to latch onto some pretty poor teams and find minutes, but his future is far from certain.

I'd hate to see the same happen to Shamorie. He deserves to be a fixture in the NBA.

I think it comes down to if he truly wants the NBA specifically vs. getting paid. He posted something about just wanting to get his family out of the projects (who could blame him for that specific reason), how he can't wait and it's his dream, etc. I'd be pretty surprised to see Ponds back.

Shamorie Ponds will return to St. John's next season, per his father. Entered 2018 NBA Draft without an agent. #SJUBB
