Pointer

I have been Redmen fan for nearly 50 years
Dom is one of the most exciting players I have ever seen at St John's
Sometimes it's great Dom, sometimes good Dom, sometimes not so good Dom
Regardless, he's been a lot of fun to watch and makes things interesting
Whether you like him as or not, he always gives 100 percent effort on the floor
It's hard not to like him this year. He has exceeded everyone's expectations. Even Marillac likes him now.

It will be interesting on Saturday. The season is on the line against a team that he played poorly against.

Correction, Marillac loves him now. What effort. He never tires...ever. What a season. Man, I loved Postell, but Dom is close to pushing past him. Swap Dom and Sampson last season and we win a lot more games.

who will ever fill his void?
typical tough gritty johnnie. some i can remember over the years that remind me of Dom. Im sure you all can add to my list....
Sir Dom
Minlend
Matty Brust
Artest
Billy Singleton
Lamont Middleton
.........who else fellas ?

Dom is playing off the charts. I'm going to hold off on the NBA talk until after the season but I'm looking forward to that. I hope he does the same and enjoys the ride.

Dom has become fantastic driving to the hoop and playing around the hoop. And he has excellent court vision seeing other players. Every game he has a highlight block and usually a highlight offensive play to the hoop also

Once again, Sir Dominant.

He pulled a shot clock beating three out of his bag of tricks at a huge moment late. He and Dlo were soaking up their last seconds on the CA court that they clearly regard as home. They waved to the fans, smiled broadly, and you know they felt the moment as special, poignant and enduring.

Pointer has become a phenomenal player. He does it all.

It just really makes you wonder about last season. Why play the kid 20+ feet from the basket? Why have him defend guards when he has shown since day one he's better at covering forwards? Lavin called the guy Costco because he could do it all, but then reduced his game to standing on the perimeter directing traffic--where his greatest assets went unused and his biggest liabilities were magnified

What a season this year. To answer the poster's question, you'll never replace what Dom is giving with just one guy. Players like him don't come around very often. It would have really been something to see Lavin's vision of Pointer-Harkless-Sampson-Garrett play out if Sampson could have bought in.

I was at the game today and after they did all of the interviews two things happened that showed how far Dom has come.

1) Marshall, the Fox Announcer, took off his microphone and headphones and came on to the court and gave Dom a hug and whispered something in his ear. It was clear that Marshall definitely was impressed with Dom.

2) After that Dom hopped the barricade and spent 10 minutes in the stands with fans and kids signing autographs and taking pictures. at one point he took a young kids phone and took a selfie with a group of kids.

I know I said I'd hold off but technically this is just a quote: Marshall on Dom "there aren't a lot of guys in the NBA that can do what he does"

I did hear that but that was right after he said he loved hearing how great of a teacher Lavin is in the huddle. I thought he was right but I don't have the same bball IQ as most on this site. :silly:

+1

what amazes me the most about Pointer, is how he can adjust in the air while driving, to what the defense is doing and still keep his eye on the hoop. This is regardless of how fast the action is. Besides Mullin and Sealy, the most exciting SJU player I have watched, since the 60's.

I'll give you the full quote from Marshall: "For him personally there aren't a lot of NBA players that can do what he does at both ends of the floor. OK, he's not going to knock down a lot of three pointers but he guards and is relentless every single game. And you are not going to have to ask Sir Dominic Pointer to play harder. I think it says a lot about this team and the way they play and are built. It shows you got a lot of strong personalities on this team And for him to rise above the top and play him anywhere you put him says a lot about his character."

Perhaps it just "clicks" now.

To think of that red shirt talk...just took him a li'l time to mature.

I always said about him that he was by far the most gifted player, but his athleticism was TOO fast for his head (and I don't mean that as a knock on his court IQ, but just that he was too fast for himself, literally). Now he seems capable of finishing more of what he's capable of finishing at that speed.

Dynamic player. Would love to see him grab a roster spot in the NBA, and if he somehow did, Lav is going to start getting credit for making pros (fair or not, this 'bout Dom).

And while D'Lo carried this team for much of the season, Dom may be the MVP when it's all said and done?

Nice change from the beginning of the year when Dom was trashed. Way to go Dom.
