Lavin's quotes on Sir Dom

On Sir'Dominic Pointer:
"He's as unique a talent as I've coached in my career. He's unorthodox and extraterrestrial. It's rare to coach someone that can guard five positions on defense and play five positions on offense. And there's his wonderful personality as his temperament and demeanor are first rate. He's what we call a happy warrior."

"There's nothing Dom could do at this point that would surprise us, because he's been exceptional in so many games over his career and in particular this year."

"He's a force of nature. He imposes his will on the game and disrupts what opponents are trying to execute offensively."

"You can't really prepare for him. How do you prepare for a tornado ripping up and down the basketball court? You can talk about it, show film, but it's not as though an opponent can simulate what Dom does unless you have Dom on your team and we're fortunate we have Dom. We're thankful. He's a special kid."

On Pointer's chances of garnering all-conference accolades
"I can't imagine there's anybody in our league, let alone the country, that influences the game at both ends of the floor in such dramatic fashion. I know in my career I've never had a player like him - he's an original or singular in uniqueness. His ability to influence the game at both ends of the floor in such dramatic fashion is really unusual. So whether it's this league or the country, it's clear his skill set and motor are exceptional."

It's been a long time since we've had a player this consistently good. How many NBA players do it all as does Pointer?

One thing about SirDominant is he is bursting with confidence right now. His timing to block shots is incredible. He's like Batman - he soars in out of nowhere to snuff shots when he didn't even appear to be in the play. On offense he has done so many things including being the guy who most often leads the breaks that he doesn't feel compelled to shoot out of his range and has curtailed wild drives to the hoop. He is playing like he is 6'8 or more on defense, and like he's 6'4 on offense. Like everyone else (except a sometimes impatient Sheed or PG4) he gives up the ball willingly knowing a better shot may exist and knows that if that better shot is his he will get the ball back.

This is a radical transformation and one borne out of necessity for him to being an interior defender after CO, a rebounder, the leader of our potent transition game, and a distributor. Quickly he is evolving to have one of the finest seasons any Redman has had in a very long time. Congrats.

Think I will take this time to pull a Marillac and applaud myself, pat myself on the back if you will, by reminding everyone that I called Sir Dom a mini Michael Jordan as an incoming freshman. You can look it up! :)

I will get on the back patting At the beginning of this season I said he has next level skills
Guess we see talent alike lol

I don't think I have ever seen a player at Dom's height have his blocking ability. If he was 4 inches taller he'd probably be averaging a triple double.

For the older fans were their any better defensive players for us ?

Beaver Smith was 6'2" I believe.

Listed at 6'4 may have been 6'3. Could jump out the gym and played more like 6'9. Could pin the ball on the backboard with the best of them. Remember a JV game his freshman year before he begame eligible to play varsity later in his fr year vs Columbia where he completely dominated the game in all aspects with 30 pts 20 rebs and what had to be double figures in blocked shots he was just pinning every shot on the backboard.

Dom is the best I have seen based on this year's performance.

beaver blew his knee out senior year and played with a brace he lost his hops but gritted it out on the court.

Always knew Sir Dom was next level talent, been saying it since he was a feshmen. I remember when Marillac use to tell me last year that there's no way that Sir Dom was NBA level type talent. I also remember telling the board last year that we had 4 NBA players on the roster (jakarr, jordan,Obeckpa,Sir dom) my fellow johnnies tought I was crazy, you guys can look that one up as well. Sad we had so much talent last year with nothing to show for it, goes to show how important chemistry is in this beautiful game. Sir Dom is Toney Allen 2.0, some of you probably hear me scream that out in the games at the Garden. Dom is one of the best defenders in the country, it's going to be real sad on Saturday to see him and the boys play their final home game.

equally important to chemistry is having a coach who can work an athlete into a system and not have him standing 20 feet from the basket as a decoy.

I can't recall any SJU player who could cover guards and big men so effectively. And his motor never seems to slow down.
