He's an all time coach, no doubt, and I'm sure he'll do great there until he moves on, which IMO will be sooner than later. Now that he's back in the fold it will be easier for better programs (or the NBA) to make a move on him. Any negative press that follows hiring him, by and large, will play itself out in the weeks to come if not over the next year. You won't see that same type of negative attention when he goes to his next gig. That plus the NCAA show-cause/sanctions issue scared off many teams -- forget us, by freaking UCLA could have hired him.
It's possible to say all that and still be happy with the Anderson hire. If you are an SJU booster, I think what Anderson did this year should make you feel proud and content.
Here is the point I am trying to make. Put yourself in this position. You are a big booster at SJU. You have been very disappointed in SJU hirings recently. Chris Mullin has just resigned.
You have watched SJU fail to land Bobby Hurley from ASU, get turned down by the HC at Loyola of Chicago and the HC at UMBC refuses to even interview. Your AD is looking at hiring the HC at Yale. Guys this really did happen. Pitino's agent calls you and says he is interested. Says call Indianapolis and you will see his name was cleared, no show cause. You are that booster. You going to simply say no?
Very easy to make the claims NOW when it is not your money and more importantly when we now know it was not going to happen. But I just love the people who simply are so sure of themselves that they would say no.
Pitino is easily one of the 10 greatest coaches in CBB history. EASILY. Ask anyone. Anyone. Ask Jim Boeheim, he is the ONE coach who he says he would NOT want to see on the other sideline in a big game. That is not because of cheating that is because of brilliance. No question about the baggage. But the fact is Calipari and Boeheim have had as bad if not worse are you saying you wouldn't hire either of them.
