Pitino and Iona

Pitino is only as good as his talent and for most of his career he’s been buying talent. Take away lots of those loaded UK teams and Louisville teams and it changes things. He’s been put on a pedestal and one I don’t agree with. I appreciate a guy like Tom Izzos and Mark Fews who often has less talent than the Pitinos of the world, yet consistently get it done at a high level.

Agree with most of your opinions but think you are way off on Pitino's coaching ability. Came to Providence who finished last or next to last for 5 years in a row and within 2 years had a team with mediocre talent in the final 4. Transformed pudgy Billy Donavan into a killer PG who ate up Mark Jackson. Pitino's teams for how far he brought them were not overly talented and he wasn't a 5 star hoarder. Time to give the devil his due.

His “due” will always be tarnished by the years of cheating. Good coach. Total d-bag otherwise.

This is only the beginning. Iona will be a power team. I am disappointed because our administration was too stupid to see this. Plus Pitino is highly motivated in this comeback.
You have great instincts. Undoubtedly, they will be a power team..would expect that Power 5 will be renamed Power 5 + 1

The jobs he did at Boston U. and Providence were amazing and he didn't buy anything. He was brought to Kentucky to clean up the cheating mess left by Eddie Sutton. He went off the deep end, personally and professionally, at Louisville. He's damaged goods and I wouldn't want him at SJU.

Rick Pitino just picked up his first pledge at Iona. Tahlik Chavez, a 6-2 combo guard, just committed, a source tells @247Sports. Averaged 21 PPG and shot 44% from 3 at Garden City CC this past season.

One thing Pitino won't tolerate are guards that can't shoot the 3. First commit is 44% from 3. No surprise there.

Rick Pitino just added his third commitment in three days. Berrick Jeanlouis just committed to Iona. Started his career at New Mexico State and spent last season at Floride Southwestern.

Hitting 3's at the community college level where everyone is a step slower and 3-4 inches shorter gives guys more time to square up and shoot, and perhaps even take more shots closer to the stripe. 44% is impressive, but at the D1 level that can easily become 24%

Looks like we’ve only played Iona 10 times since 1946
And our record is 7-3 vs them. There an inconsequential matchup for us and I’d venture to guess we won’t be playing them in the near future at all.

Lol true.
If you think SJU will WANT to play Iona anytime soon I have a piece of land in Florida to sell you.
I don’t think CMA would shy away from it for a second, but it does nothing for us to play them. I’m sure Cragg and the like realize that.

If we played them, I'd want it to be first game of season. It would get a ton of eyeballs because of Pitino's return, and you'd get them before the kids have mastered his system.

But as far as W/L, it does virtually nothing if we win, but have egg on our face if we lose to a MAAC team.

Shema had Rutgers interest/offer

Rick Pitino just added his 4th and 5th commitment since Sunday. Osborn Shema, a 7-1 big man from New Mexico Miltary Institute, and Johan Crafoord, a 6-9 forward from Glove Prep, just committed to Iona, a source tells @247Sports.
Holy crap. How many schollies does he have? Let's face it, there is no question the guy can flat out coach, and there's no question he can attract talent. He was kind of like Roger Clemens or Bonds - why cheat, you are already among the all time greats? But the insatiable urge to win, to be on top, drives even great talents to break the rules.
