Pitino and Iona

Well, since you mention it, it just goes to show these guys are out there. And yes, they already have more size than we do.
Also can’t wait for the inevitable Iona has more big man than SJU posts
Waiting for St. John's to sign a big man is like Waiting for Godot and when we do get a big he doesn't amount too much and often leaves the program. Is there a 6'6 and under division in college basketball?

Shema had Rutgers interest/offer

Rick Pitino just added his 4th and 5th commitment since Sunday. Osborn Shema, a 7-1 big man from New Mexico Miltary Institute, and Johan Crafoord, a 6-9 forward from Glove Prep, just committed to Iona, a source tells @247Sports.
Holy crap. How many schollies does he have? Let's face it, there is no question the guy can flat out coach, and there's no question he can attract talent. He was kind of like Roger Clemens or Bonds - why cheat, you are already among the all time greats? But the insatiable urge to win, to be on top, drives even great talents to break the rules.
One of my psychiatrist friends tried to explain this to non-clinician me. Primary narcissism is when you are the heir to the English throne of the oldest son in many traditional families. You are taught early on that the world really does revolve around you. Secondary narcissism, being driven to have the world affirm that you really have value and are okay, is compensatory, in which you are tasking the world with the job of making you feel better despite some profound fundamental wound pushing you towards feelings that you have no value..

Rick Pitino is off to a hot recruiting start at Iona.
On Thursday, Pitino, who accepted the head coaching position just a week and a half ago, picked up his sixth commitment in a five day span, adding NBA Academy Africa big man Nelly Junior Joseph.
Joseph, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound post prospect, gives Iona a physical and athletic presence in the paint. Joseph has a sturdy, strong build with long arms and has a tremendous amount of potential as a rebounder, rim runner and athlete.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe any of these players are Big East caliber. Don't understand why some are freaking out. Great for Iona, but not relevant to us.

Also, often coaches have their best recruiting classes within their first year or two. Just look at Mullin and Lavin. Just because he's stockpiling mid-major talent now doesn't mean he's going to elevate that to Big East talent. If anything, the way he's recruiting now tells me he won't be a problem for us.

Agree, no sense to freak out on this.

Absolutely correct - remember all the buzz about how Mullin was off to a fast start because he signed a bunch of guys right out of the gate? It was desperation time, because you have to fill a roster. I remember listening to a recruiting podcast at the time saying that Yakuba Sima was a legit NBA prospect, so it's easy to overrate these guys just because Pitino is signing them.

Yep- and Mullin actually put together a very nice first class on paper- was ranked #25 overall I believe. Lots of talent around the 100-150 range. Big name coaches like Penny, Mullin, Lavin, etc can come in and recruit well immediately but that doesn't mean they'll continue doing so (let alone do much better later on).

None of these recruits even appear to have recruiting pages. In other words, they're 2 star talent. It's possible some are 3 stars, but certainly no better and doubt we were in on any of them.

But they only cost Pitino 10 grand each.

This is his zero class. His first class is in November. Lavin in what you term his first class brought in Dwayne Polee it was his November class when he hit the jackpot.

Like him or not, the man works quickly.

If we are to regain any portion of our past Glory, we need to toughen our OOC early schedule . For example, play a Gonzaga or Kansas or Auburn in the Garden . Could pair it as a Double header , Syracuse vs UConn . Guaranteed a sell out . Yes , 1/2 the Garden would be Orange and Huskie fans . Or , Notre Dame vs Kentucky .

I've been told by others on board that Gonzaga doesn't pack them in.

Ready or not, Pitino wants to be THE program in NY metro
area. Iona will get tons more coverage with him being there.

Even given Rick's ambition, the top program in the NY/NJ area may be Rutgers which is expected to be a top 20-25 team next season
Have heard, from a source I trust, that MSG has offered Iona 3-4 home games.

Don't know if that is over 2 or 3 years.
Perfect time to scale back............
