Pitino and Iona
He may never coach a game at Iona. What if the NCAA sanctions against Louisville include a "show cause" against Pitino? After reading everything about how quickly Pitino was hired - which didn't even include an in-person interview - do we honestly think they got a clean bill of health on Pitino from the NCAA before hiring him? Highly unlikely in my view...
Sean Miller and Pearl cant recall name were mentioned in the same report and have been coaching.

Would expect a big upgrade to Iona's non conference schedule ASAP while Pitino is there. Also am I remembering correctly that Porter Moser took a mid major to the final 4?

The NCAA hasn't ruled on their cases yet, either. They are in the same boat as Pitino.

Yes, with Loyola Chicago as an 11 seed. They didn't have to face the 1 or the 2 to get there, though, so they got a little lucky. It also came out of nowhere.

Saying that Pitino is going to take Iona to a Final Four, must be measured in totality. It's more, how good are they going to be year after year? It's going to be tough for him to do better then Cluess did. He can do as well, but better is nearly impossible.

I thought the WFAN Maggie & Moose interview w Pitino this morning was soft - basically they enabled Rick Pitino to say his only mistake was that he trusted subordinates who cheated - so that he will responsibility for that alone. He did nothing wrong.

He also said he has a huge buyout so there is little chance he could leave Iona for another job.

What about specifics in re his $ and time & experience to change his ways, give back to Iona and its community? What about showing some remorse and some generosity to others - in light of the millions he’s made and will make?

I wonder what Iona is paying him? Maybe he should work sans pay - to prove his sincerity that he really wants to help develop young men.

Just a few reflections.

The MAAC is not even close to MVC. The MAAC from an RPI standpoint is one of the worst conferences period.

Guys you could root for. Pitino isn't in that category. That being said...Anderson will never get us to a final four. Iona will get there with Pitino coaching.

Our task of luring quality recruits here have taken two hits...Pitino and allowing slimeball UCONN into the conference. They've burned us before (Henefeld/Wiggins to name two) and they'll do it again.
I’m sorry. You think that Iona will get to a a Final Four Under Pitino ???
Let's put it this way. He took a crappy Providence team (17-14) in his first year...to a final four in year two. So, my answer is yes, Iona will get to a final four. I'd be shocked...shocked...if we ever got there.
He’s never been under this kind of NCAA microscope, with possible sanctions/penalties forthcoming. His rep is badly tarnished, and PC was in the Big East. Not going to be all that easy for him IMO.
I know he had his problems with the Celtics...but he took a horrendous Knicks team to 50 plus wins in year two. Easy? No, but I wouldn't underestimate him.
I am not underestimating him by any means, nor am I overestimating him. Time will tell it this was a smart move or not. Iona doesn’t have nearly as much to loose with this hire if it doesn’t work out, as we would have had it we hired him and it didn’t work out.

You can always start rooting for Iona, and maybe even pony up $150K to buy his first player. :)

Rick Pitino can obviously coach and is usually quite successful, Iona took a risk & rolled dice. St John’s has a competent, experienced coach and a reasonable chance of being a very competitive Big East team in a few years. Perhaps Rick, Iona, Mike A & Johnnies all succeed. This is not a mutually exclusive situation, so let’s see what future brings. Arguing seems pointless, since nobody will reconsider their position anyway. :)

Rick Pitino to Iona at this point, is akin to Fat Elvis, on the toilet, eating fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

I think the biggest problem some people have is they can never hold two thoughts simultaneously in their head and therefore it is all or nothing.

So Pitino was available last year, SJU decided to pass. Iona decided not to. If anyone praises iona and Pitino then they are by default in some people's mind insulting SJU and Coach Anderson. When that is not necessarily true. So to combat this they begin to then trash Pitino and his coaching ability in a very disihonest way because they don't want to be seen as disloyal to Coach. When in fact that is not how it works.

I think that just about covers it.

Doubt it ever happens at the Garden.

No. Pitino is a slime ball. It’s not everybody else Fordham. There are just a lot of people who like to see at least a somewhat clean coach at SJU. Again, I’d love to see us win as much as anybody and I don’t need to see an unscrupulous coach at SJU. Pitino is on the opposite end of that spectrum. He’s also a BS artist and has zero interest in anything but himself. He’s sold kids and colleagues out. Don’t need that stuff.

Fordham, I do not think our opinions of Pitino have anything to with our loyalty to Mike Anderson. One has nothing to do with the other. I felt exactly the same way about Pitino last year as I do now, and Anderson wasn't our coach then so no one was worried about being loyal to him.

Here's the issue: do you only care about winning - to the point where you would hire a serial cheater with low morals (for that is exactly what Rick Pitino is) - or do you want a coach who will at least attempt to run a clean program? Personally, I'd rather have a guy that tries to win the right way. I think Mike Anderson is that guy.

You and Dee, and apparently a supposedly Catholic institution of higher learning, Iona College, just want to win at all costs. We simply disagree.

That is not what I said.

I have rooted for Iona for a long time. I was friends with Tim Cluess' brother, Greg, back in the day. Four of the brothers went to St John's, including Tim...who transferred to Hofstra. A friend and former co-worker, Gary Stanley, does the play by play for them. One of my best friend's sons played varsity baseball for four years there. I root for Iona...I bleed for St John's. Big difference.

I read where Pitino is getting 1.1 million dollars to coach at Iona.

The bigger question...sure Pitino is a fallen man...but he's comparable to Bill Clinton who enjoyed the lips of one of his interns...or Donald Trump...a serial cheater of his three wives and worse. Where is the morality of those who condemn Pitino but who put the others on a pedestal...

This is a sports forum. Plenty of other places to go to question the morals of politicians. Besides, like Pitino, I wouldn’t Trump or Clinton(both of them) mentoring my kid either.
