Everyone "in the know" and all the optimists were certain we'd land Nolan and/or Chandler. Now the only hope to have a legit big rests with the NCAA and a kid who has changed commitments 4 or 5 times. Next year may be another long one
Just doesn't look as rosy as Lavin and the fans are making it out to be. Missing a big body yet again and it's getting to be late in he game. Branch, Sampson, and Sanchez will all help improve this team to maybe 18-20 wins but without a true center it's going to be impossible to compete with top notch programs.

Why so glum, chum?

Most of his posts have been that way. Obviously, he's a pessimists by his mentioning of the "optimists." He must like getting a reaction from the board. I'm sure we're going to soon hear about how much he's a realist.
Nevertheless, most of the "in the know" the optimists felt we were in good shape with Nolan, considering he visited last weekend. I don't recall anyone particularly saying they were certain he'd end up in Queens. Most of the folks who are privy to info feels confident Chandler will end up in Queens. I'll say that with confidence and will eat crow, if he is cleared and doesn't end up with the Johnnies.
By the way, you can win without a true center.
Also an 18-20 win season is not another long season" but another step in the right direction (and maybe an NCAA appearance).
But who will they be saving the last dance for, and don't forget in whose arms the trophy's gonna be-----
The team with the dominating center and a backup center !
While you may not need a "true" center to win at the highest level you definitely need at least a few 6'8 - 6'10 guys to do so.
Just look at the teams in this year's Final 4:
Lousiville-Gorgui Deng-6'11, Zach Price- 6'10
Ohio State- Sullinger-6'8(with his size and girth plays bigger than height), Amir Williams-6'10, Ravenel- 6'9
Kentucky-Anthony Davis-6'10(with his wingspan played more like a true 7 footer), Terrence Jones-6'9, Wiltjer-6'9
Kansas-Jeff Withey-7'0, T Rob-6'9
I think Sanchez and Sampson give us good size along with Gift but I think Chandler moves SJU into the realm of a team who could make a deep run in March in the next two years.
Is that Doogie Howser with old Bob?
I agree. Also like Goodman, but have to fill our need which is a Center. Although I wouldnt be dissapointed w Chandler and Goodman.Savon Goodman would be a nice pickup. However in terms of need, SJU needs a Nolan or Chandler a lot more than they need a 6'6 swingman. Until SJU gets one or two 6'10 kids we won't be able to compete deep into March.
I don't quite get this board's obsession with a center. Goodman would destroy Nolan...he'd eat the kid's lunch and then his dinner. We run a zone more than half the game...a zone that requires our big men to rotate and defend not just centers but a lot of times even guards. Is Nolan going to get out there to close out on a guard better than Goodman? Is he going to be able to rotate 5,6, or more times in a possession?
It's nice to have a big man to turn to against a big team that is imparting its style on us, but it's not a huge need for the defense that we run. If it was, Lavin would have landed or a least targeted more bigs. Chandler makes so much more sese for us because, unlike Nolan, the kid is physically ready to hold his own. He's also a back to the basket scorer, and I think this team could really use a couple of more scorers. We got one with Wood, but it'd be nice to get a guy that can do with his back to the basket.
I know everyone thinks back to BYU and what Sacre did to us, but look what happened the next game to Gonzaga. They got run out of the gym by a team with one guy over 6'6 on the roster.
I agree. See Terry Fair vs Bill Wennington.

I guess you just went to those respective teams rosters and randomly looked at their height.
Zach Price played all but 2 minutes in the tourney. Dieng played well defensively for the Cards, but they do not go anywhere without their backcourt.
Amir Williams and Evan Ravenel.... Ha! Those guys WATCHED plenty of Ohio State games.
I'll give you Anthony Davis and Terrence Jones from UK, and Jeff Withey and Thomas Robinson of KU. UK's, Kyle Wiltjer didn't particular see too much time, either.
Of course, we all want a talented kid, who does have size, in Chandler. Although, he's 6'8", I'll take a high-level shotblocker in Obekpa. Heck! We could go to work with Goodman (6'6"). Overall, you can win with the guys we currently have on our roster.
