Phillip Nolan, C - UCONN

Zags Post on Nolan to UCONN.

It sounds like SJU did the best they could and were a leader with this kid, but maybe he always had his heart set on UCONN.

On the brightstide, Lavin has the program back at the forefront of recruiting. He's competing with the big boys, and while he may not have won this battle, its shows the progress he's made in just 2 years on campus. Now, let's close Chandler and/or Obekpa (i know, those chances are slim).

St. John's like everyone else isn't going to get 100% of the recruits they target, but I'm a sucker for Lavin's 'hammer to rock' and am confident he can fill out the class.

Interesting quotes from the zagsblog piece:

Still, the source was surprised he pulled the trigger and said he wasn’t sure if Nolan had visited UConn.

“I think he really liked that visit [to St. John's],” the source said. “He said he liked it. It certainly sounded like to me he was going to St. John’s.”

Just shows that we still have a little ways to go in that a power program -- one headed to probation -- can still swoop in and seemingly take a guy from us.

I'm definitely pleased that our recruiting seems to be solidly only one notch below the big boys so soon into Lavin's tenure, but this one hurts a little. I really liked the idea of Nolan in red.

If Chandler makes it, Nolan becomes barely a loss at all, but if he doesn't make the grade, we are thin up front. I don't like our history with dealing with the NCAA...

Just for the record I liked Nolan alot!! But this may open up a sPot for savon, 6 7 undesized 4!!! He would have a great career here IMO

Savon Goodman would be a nice pickup. However in terms of need, SJU needs a Nolan or Chandler a lot more than they need a 6'6 swingman. Until SJU gets one or two 6'10 kids we won't be able to compete deep into March.

Perhaps Phil decided to attend Yukon after he visited his barber and got a "Doug Wiggin$ haircut".

I agree. Also like Goodman, but have to fill our need which is a Center. Although I wouldnt be dissapointed w Chandler and Goodman.

Does anyone know what made Nolan prefer Yukon to us. He didn't even visit Yukon.

Maybe the threat of Chandler scared him away ???? But why couldn't he have waited a couple of weeks to see if Chandler qualified. Almost seems like he wanted Yukon even while he was visiting us as there wasn't even a verbal that was hinted at.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Our crew has everything BUT a quality big man. That is an enormous but !

We all know that Steve is resourceful, but this scenario is really challenging. We need some luck !

I don't quite get this board's obsession with a center. Goodman would destroy Nolan...he'd eat the kid's lunch and then his dinner. We run a zone more than half the game...a zone that requires our big men to rotate and defend not just centers but a lot of times even guards. Is Nolan going to get out there to close out on a guard better than Goodman? Is he going to be able to rotate 5,6, or more times in a possession?

It's nice to have a big man to turn to against a big team that is imparting its style on us, but it's not a huge need for the defense that we run. If it was, Lavin would have landed or a least targeted more bigs. Chandler makes so much more sese for us because, unlike Nolan, the kid is physically ready to hold his own. He's also a back to the basket scorer, and I think this team could really use a couple of more scorers. We got one with Wood, but it'd be nice to get a guy that can do with his back to the basket.

I know everyone thinks back to BYU and what Sacre did to us, but look what happened the next game to Gonzaga. They got run out of the gym by a team with one guy over 6'6 on the roster.

Something very strange about this recruitment. Don't even think Calhoun will be around more than a year or two. Kid didn't even visit Uconn. Just odd, but who cares. Hoping here that Chandleror Obekpa still comes through. Chandler is the prize IMO. Obekpa recently tweeted that he was homesick. Wind if it helps our recruitment at all. We'll see...

Homesick for Long island or homesick for Africa?

I agree. Nolan isn't ready to put the ball in the hoop next season, whereas Goodman likely is. Nolan is also skinny enough that Goodman might be better suited to battle in traffic despite a several-inch height disadvantage. Nolan would have given us blocks, but he is more raw then Goodman.

The big issue is whether Goodman is eligible, though, and most seem to think it's the longest of long shots.

Looking like Chandler or nobody, so lucky for us Sanchez came aboard.

I agree. See Terry Fair vs Bill Wennington.

Goodman s a beast and would be a great fit in our system! 6 7 and high high motor!

I'd take Chandler and Goodman in a NY minute, but does anyone know where the second ship would come from for Goodman (assuming he's a 2012 decision)?

Good post!

If Goodman is going to be eligible for 2012, then I'd go after him. Although, he's 6'6", he'll still be able to give us something due to his strength, jumping ability and knack for scoring in the interior. Nolan is 6'11", but more of a finesse player. I certainly wanted to land Nolan due to his length; ability to block shots and face-up. But, Goodman would more than suffice for losing out on Nolan.

I think some posters have been shooked by Sacre and Fab Melo.

Goodman can play in 2012. He is just deciding what is better for him.

You sure speak of Goodman a lot. Do you know him? You say he can play in 2012 but everyone and their mother seem to say he's a reach to get eligible this year.
