Phillip Nolan, C - UCONN

What year is he? Does he have to prep or could he qualify for next year?

He's 2012. I believe he's able to go in 2012, but could still prep. I'm sure we'll hear more about this over the next few days.

He's intriguing enough that I don't think the staff would hesitate to stash him at Bridgeton if he does need to prep.

He might be a kid Lav brings in to play as a frosh only to redshirt him as a soph. He seems like the protoype redshirt player. The problem is we need size so desperately next season that he would probably have to take his redshirt the following year when we replace GG with a top big like Lawrence.

Self has done plenty of these mid-career redshirts to balance out team needs in specific seasons.

I think that's b/c Self has a gazillion McDonalds All Americans on his team. We have no depth up front. I haven't seen him play, but if this kid is so much of a project that you think he should be redshirted as a Sophomore then I'm not so excited about his recruitment.

i like the fact that Wood, and Nolan are visiting this weekend. The BIG SPRING CONCERT is tonight with multiple big name rap artists performing. Would be good to show the recruits that STJ can put on a good concert for their students.

He doesn't need to be redshirted. He was a top 90 player. He can work on his game and s strength this summer and during the season. No need at all to redshirt him. Suit him up and coach him up. He's a top rated big man, not a project in the sense that some are making it.

What are our chances of getting a commitment? Does anyone in the know, know where we stand with him? We have to be attractive to a center like Nolan, with the guards, wings, and now PF's we have. Lavin's ark is close to being built.

Here are a couple of excerpts from last spring and summer, per Rivals....

Phillip Nolan, PF, DTA- The 6-foot-9 big man showed up shortly after tipoff and made a difference during his minutes. The long lefty has added strength in the last year while remaining lean and moves very well for a guy his size. Runs the floor, gets up quickly around the rim and things like catching, faking right and then losing a defender with an in and out dribble going left before pulling up for a 17 footer come easy to him. Nolan says that he'll be back at Newark (N.J.) St Benedict next year and could make some noise if he gets serious about things.

Phillip Nolan, PF/C, DTA Devin Harris- His team went down in defeat to MoKan Elite, but Nolan was very good in stretches. A long and lean 6-foot-9 forward, Nolan moves with the agility of a much smaller player and wields a smooth jumper that is true to 20 feet. He can chase down blocks on the break and has a body to grow into.

Sounds promising, lets wrap him up. Another positive would be that we keep him away from Marquette.

Fwiw, I believe he's a NJ native and wants to come back to the metro area. I don't think Marquette's location is necessarily a bonus for them in his recruitment. It very well could be helping us.

I have the feeling Lavin will wrap this kid up. He has developed a ton of underrecruited lanky big men and turned them into NBA players. I'm sure CRgreen could help on that one. I think this kid could really fit the bill since 2013 is really the year we should make a run. Give him a year to develop and add bulk and he could be the missing piece.

Agree Gman. This is a perfect addition, if qualified of course. He seems legitimately interested in SJU and may have even pursued us bait from his comments. I don't think this one should be tough for Lavin to pull off. Kid has great size and big upside as well with some extra muscle and the help of Dunlap, Rico and Co.

He tweeted during his visit

"New York is by far the best city I've ever been to."

Sounds like the city and the garden are appealing to him, and Lavin should be able to do the rest and bring him in.

It would be great to add 2 6'10" or 11" guys to the team (Chandler and Nolan). Have not had that kind of size in a long long time. Let's hope Coach can get this done.

What do people think is the backup plan if Chandler doesn't qualify, assuming Nolan commits? Save the scholarship? Sounds like Obekpa isn't an option. Go with one Center?

In your scenario if Nolan commits there technically is no other schollie

One center would be fine. We have Gift still and Sanchez and would have Nolan. More than enough. We don't need a huge roster. We just need more size than we had.
