Phillip Nolan, C - UCONN

That's part of the job of a coach. Getting enough information so a he can make the best evaluation in projecting the chances of success a recruit has.

Lavin's job is easier than the average, as his choices should come from a relatively more abundant and clear cut pool of recruits Steve is a naturally born recruiter. He is intelligent, energetic, charismatic, friendly and sincere. The whole package.. He is a magnet and doesn't need projects.

Phillip Nolan may not be a project but he certainly has some of the symptoms .

This year is very different. It well may be that Steve's medical problem and the state of flux in the Big East produced a real recruiting liability. Some recruits, like Ricardo Gathers, were spooked and fled the coop.

This has been a tough year on the recruiting trail but Steve is resourceful enough to rebound from it but maybe not this year.

IMO, the foreign trip was primarily made to plug this recruiting gap and secondarily to create a new pipeline.

I don't think the trip would have been made if our class was set in place.

Just too many recruiting ifs and maybes right now.

The trip to Europe can be characterized one of two ways:

1. The 2012 class is complete. We are looking for prospects for 2013 and beyond OR
2. The 2012 class has not materialized as expected and we are combing the earth for more talent for this class

I surely hope that option (1) above is the answer but I am not convinced that such is the case

Or perhaps he's confident that he has enough of the guys he's recruiting in the fold, and now he's showing his face in order to land the best available and eligible English-speaking prospect overseas.

Why is #1 much better in the end? We don't know who is going to be the better player. Say we lose Obekpa. The kid has a long way to go offensively. Instead maybe we land a Phillip Nolan who is also a highly ranked player, and 2 inches taller as well. Point is that just beause this class might not be wrapped up yet doesn't mean that the original options were all that much better. We lost Gathers, but maybe that allowed us to get a re-commit from Jakarr. I'm not convinced that Gathers was all that much better for us than Jakarr in the end. I still think we have to see how it plays out. Landing a borderline top 100 player is 6'10" like Nolan who wants to play here is better than just a consolation prize. The kid has offers from good programs. I also like his height.

Most schools didn't expect four-star prospect Phillip Nolan to qualify academically. Now it is looking like the 6-foot-10 center out of Milwaukee (Wis.) Riverside University High School will qualify, kick-starting his recruitment into high gear. Memphis, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee amongst others are jumping into the mix.

Not sure if this was posted. If so- apologies. Portion of big feature on him from earlier this year.

"We actually just lost our regional playoff game yesterday," said Nolan on Sunday night. "This year I only got to play in seven games because I had transferred from a prep school and Wisconsin rules, through the WIAA, they had me sit the majority of the season.

"I still got to practice everyday and my game got better at pretty much everything. We had so many bigs on our team that I was also able to work on more ball handling. I think my perimeter game developed more.

"I actually believe I got stronger too. The last few weeks I've been working out with a trainer about four or five times a week and doing that while eating the protein shakes I've gained a couple pounds. So I've got stronger.

"With me being stronger, I already have some good post moves, but with the added strength my post game has developed more."

Nolan already has the length, athletic ability, and low post touch that many schools drool over and you know they are excited hearing about added strength to Nolan's frame.

Over the past year Nolan has accumulated numerous offers including Arizona, Baylor, Clemson, Iowa State, Marquette, Minnesota, Maryland, Oklahoma, Oregon, Saint Louis, and Texas A&M. But with the fall signing period coming and goings of course some schools have moved on while new programs are recruiting Phillip.

"Right now out of all the schools that are looking at me I would say Oklahoma is recruiting me the hardest," explained Nolan. "Me and one of the assistant coaches at Oklahoma had built a relationship over the summer time. Missouri, Tennessee, and Memphis are also recruiting me."

All those schools and others still have time to get in on Nolan because at this point he is still wide open.

"To be honest I couldn't even tell you when I expect to make a decision," explained Nolan. "I'm not even thinking about it that much right now to tell you the truth. I've haven't had it on my mind nor have I put much thought into it."

Best part is that the kid has verbalized his interest in SJU. Always great when some talented players become qualified in the spring and become available. Wouldn't mind this kid here at all.

I don't know if he said he wants to play here. He expressed interest in us. That's a big difference.

I would express interest in taking a free trip, good food, ----- to NYC from Milwaukee.

He also said that he's really close with an OK . ass't coach

His height is good He seems to be, from most scouting reports, a power forward.

MICHAEL CHANDLER plus one more who bangs the boards and intimidates.

His name can be Sanchez, Obekpa, DeGaulle, Banderas, or Mussolini, it doesnt matter !

A few points. The article about Oklahoma is old. His recruitment is changed now. He'll be a center in college most likely.

So many proverbs and principles in life - saw in today's paper some Russian versions wiht the Nets owner;

the point is we never know in advance - only the shadow - and a "guaranatted recruit" can be a bust and someone not highly considered can flourish;

I trust Lavin and his staff - (havew they given us any reason not too?) - they will do the best of any staff given the time, recources etc.

In my view we already have enough kids to play next year - better than this year and with experinece - I just want to enjoy what is and not frustrate myself over what id not happen.

I'm patient enough to wait and see - again one never knows - your kid makes one college and not another - how will it turn out? hey another proverb/saying - time will tell; beware of what you hope for.

all the best
happy holidays

We dont have enough bigs to play effectively next year,,,,,,,,,yet.

Agree. I still think Lavin will land 2 bigs yet this spring though. Will be interesting to see exactly who but they won't be marginal players regardless.

We have enough bigs if we want to go 13-19 again. Sheridan must have fallen in love with his captor. Let's not get used to and settle for 6 man teams with barely 2 bigs (Jakarr and GG). Have you ever heard of injuries, foul trouble, ineligibility, suspensions?

Who said anything about us having enough bigs?

Read a few posts prior-Sheridan did. Actually said we have enough players and than other said we need more bigs. By saying we have ENOUGH PLAYERS that implies we have enough bigs otherwise you would say we NEED MORE BIGS.

Oh, okay.... I think I glanced at his last post. I thought you were referring to the majority since you didn't quote Sheridan's last post.

Part of a tournament recap-

Phillip Nolan - Nolan's second game of the season was against a Hopkins team that appears to be running on all cylinders so judgment on his ability should wait until a further date. Nolan is all of 6-foot-10 and still the long and athletic player that Gopher Illustrated loved in Las Vegas a couple summers back.

Defensively his long arms and agility have the potential to be a menace in a high major program. Nolan blocked four shots against the Royals including one pin off the glass of a Jake Wright shot and a smashing of a Siyani Chambers attempt. Nolan also grabbed four rebounds, which doesn't seem like much but consider that Hopkins scored 91 points and had the game in running time early. Translation, there weren't many defensive boards to grab. Nolan was stuck defending Zach Stahl often, which is quite the task for a 6-foot-10 player in only his second game back. There were struggles but that should be expected. As a shot blocker Nolan looks really good and he has the potential to be a good position defender if he wants to be.

Offensively Nolan led his team with 13 points and all came from the low block. Phillip looked like a back to the basket post in this game utilizing a quick spin move over his right shoulder, a left hand jumphook from five feet, and a power move going through a double team to score while being fouled. Nolan also scored twice on putbacks and he produced a field goal on a lob play that Hopkins read perfectly with Stahl bumping Nolan but Phillip went through the bump and scored anyway.

Minnesota had Head Coach Tubby Smith, Assistant Coach Saul Smith, and Assistant Coach Vince Taylor were in the building looking on. At 6-foot-10 and athletic Nolan is a high major talent. He will need to hit the weights but his frame could add muscle and still keep his athleticism. Offensively Nolan has some work to do but he could score some as a freshman. The key to him playing in his first year of college will be his consistency on defense. He is a shot blocker and will be able to do that right away, but there are some positional defensive things that need to come back to him after sitting out for so long.

Five High schools in four years. Sounds like the type of kid we should probably stay away from.

I agree. Head cases need not apply.

Coach Keady was asked what was the biggest difference between Lavin as his Graduate Assistant at Purdue to today: "He's a disciplinarian now."

Is it any wonder that Nurideen Lindsey was gone shortly after his mom and entourage were posting on Facebook that the coaching staff were suppressing his game?

Character counts.

My recollection is that the fb posts took place after Lindsey left the team. I think Lindsey's transfer was his own decision.

I've heard that Lindsay was destined to be the Fab Melo of southern NY, in that he wasn't attending classes and was on the verge of failing out. That coupled with the fact that he and Dunlap didn't see eye to eye, with Nuri believing he should be the go to guy. Lavin asked Nuri to leave the team, saving Lindsay the embarrassment of having been ruled ineligible academically. Ask yourself why he winds up at Rider, a real powerhouse?

It's not too far from Philadelphia, his home town.
