Penn State Game

Wow I'm stunned we lost. Thought for sure the team was going to show up big time this weekend

This team has no I repeat no Bball IQ, think Lavin gets athletes but not ones who think the game.

The players are a reflection of the coaching staff

I guess I'm in the minority when I say I'm happy our guys hung tough, came back and made it a game.

Yes they've been down in recent years, but Penn State is still Penn State.
Penn St. is still Penn St.? What is that supposed to mean? They have never been a hoop power they are a football school. this may be one of their better teams.

Whoops, scratch that thank you from me. Meant to hit reply button instead because he's obviously being sarcastic.

And Auburn is going to win.

I think it is a little early this year for my annual post that when Lavin was at UCLA I always thought his teams played as less than the sum of their parts. Did not see the game (tried to buy it on-line but it would not go through) so it's hard to judge but the posts here suggest either Fordham game of three years ago on the way to learning to win or a very frustrating season. Look for structured use of Hooper off point guard penetration as key to answer. Greene has to be subject to point guard getting him the ball, not running the show himself as PG, when we try to use his streakiness.

Went to game last night but was too disappointed to even logon to the forums last night..My observations:

1) Penn State's guard were better than our guards. Hit open shots, Hit FTs and penetrated
2) Penn State really packed their zone in, so giving Hooper extended minutes was a smart move by Lavin. It opened up the paint a bit and helped us get back into the game.
3) A # of bonehead plays (already mentioned by others) down the stretch that point to lack of floor leader - not coach's fault.
4) Don't understand what Lavin is doing with Sanchez and Jordan. He better find a role via which Sanchez can thrive or we will have wasted one of the more uniquely talented players that we have. As for Jordan, as I have stated in past, this kid needs to play as he represents our upside. He, once again, was visibly -- apathetic or unhappy (choose for yourself) -- riding the pine in the 2nd half. As happened in Longwood game, bench erupted at a big moment in our comeback and he did not even stand.
5) We need to recognize and respond appropriately to critical moments and need to play with more of a sense of urgency throughout the game. As noted by a previous poster, not sure why we retreated into our shell in OT when our attacking style had PSU on its heels.
6) Putting asides Jakarr taking the bait on Frazier's OBVIOUS and PREMEDITATED attempt to draw foul on the 3 pointer, having him at top of key with Pointer out was a good move.

Onto GT who looked terrible...final score is misleading...

Did not see the game (tried to buy it on-line but it would not go through) ..
I was also unable to purchase the game on my IPad. I was told by the Barclays Center help desk that transmission was not available on IPads ( only available on computers) which explanation did not seem to make sense.

Look for structured use of Hooper off point guard penetration as key to answer....

IMO Hooper lacks foot speed and is a liability on defense. The announcer on the radio also commented that the Penn State players were whizzing past Hooper.when he played defense.

I can't agree with this when we were down around 10 already when Hooper made his first three. His defense did not appear to be much worse than the rest of the team and his offensive production was better.

Yeah that'll get him back into the coach's good graces after serving a suspension. Time to grow up. He was given the starting job and lost it and hasn't done anything yet to reclaim it. Pouting isn't the answer. Nothing more I'd love then to see him live up to the hype but right now it looks like he's got a lot of work to do

He didn't lose the job on the court...he was suspended...He came back and has played pretty well in his limited minutes...I don't condone being a diva, but we are not going to reach our potential without him being "integral to everything we do" (paraphrasing Lavin's words)...not going to beat top teams without a true point guard in the game...

What did he do last night to deserve getting yanked?
Taking that 3?
Harrison would never play if that was the case.
Why he and Sanchez don't get more minutes is extremely puzzling.

"Greatness is more than potential. It is the execution of that potential. Beyond the raw talent. You need the appropriate training. You need the discipline. You need the inspiration. You need the drive." (Eric A. Burns)

Bottom line is this was supposed to be the season that got St. John's back in the national spotlight. Based on what I've seen so far from this team, we as fans should not hold our breath.

Agree so far Jordan has been less than ordinary. Disappointing start to this season. Every game now is a game we are prob underdogs and from our performance thus far are likely to lose a bunch How could we have all those coaches on our staff, one a hall of famer and be putting our such a mediocre product.
On the bright side if we hit 9 more shots to date we could have been undefeated
Can anyone realistically see us with 20 wins. Think that was coaches goal? At this rate we could be looking at 13 wins again Hope something happens to make us come alive and live up to the talent
Think Jordan is sitting because he is flat out not performing Div 1 is diff from HS The game is faster and the talent is on his level and higher which makes his learning curve slower Although I think he will come around and be a force just will take time

Anyone who has been to games thus far this year, and especially the recent ones like Longwood could see this loss as predictable, with more to come.

Lavin's strategy, without on court adjustments appears to be organic improvement - the guys will learn to play together better as the season progresses. While this is partially true, it will likely result in some very painful losses that should have been wins.

Whoa.

The starting job is irrelevant. He needs minutes. 6 minutes in a game that went to OT? I'd be pissed too.

Question a freshman living up to the hype when the entire team have been and underachieving group for years?

Lavin had an entire Euro trip and 4 cakewalk games to set a rotation. He didn't. People came in here and said he was "experimenting" against Monmouth. That was a joke. Again, what was the point of the Euro trip?

If you don't beat GT today, the floodgates will open and rightfully so. We had excuses 2 years ago. We have NONE today.

in 78 minutes this year he's shooting a team low 23% and is 4th in shot attempts. Not great numbers. However he does lead the team in assists. It seems his problem is he's taking too many shots and they're not going in.

We win this game if Obeka in the first half is not called for having his hands in the rim area on a Jakar basket- the ref was wrong on that one, we win if the Penn State guard is called for walking when he slid on the floor for about 10 feet with the ball and we win if Jakar makes his layups and/or free throws. They coulda woulda and shoulda won

We are discussing the Penn State game! He took ONE shot! In six minutes with 3 assists. Was he being punished for previous games??
Using your logic, Harrison should come off the bench (I agree) so he does not chuck up 3 pointers when not needed and by his FG %, not proficient at either.
Our 6'9 future Spanish League second division all star has taken 24 shots in six games, many from 3, so Primo is taking bone head long shots and wasting his height.
As for Hoops minutes last night, the Nittany defense was no different than previous defenses as teams pack the middle because we can't find an open shooter. So why did he sit for 5 games? Last night, he was a secret weapon?
Sampson loses focus during most games trying to get his points. Was he sitting next to Jordan? The game was won until he missed his foul shot and proceeded to foul on a 3 point attempt.
If you are going to blame players, blame the ones that played like crap and not the ones that were benched.
