He didn't lose the job on the court...he was suspended...He came back and has played pretty well in his limited minutes...I don't condone being a diva, but we are not going to reach our potential without him being "integral to everything we do" (paraphrasing Lavin's words)...not going to beat top teams without a true point guard in the game...Went to game last night but was too disappointed to even logon to the forums last night..My observations:
1) Penn State's guard were better than our guards. Hit open shots, Hit FTs and penetrated
2) Penn State really packed their zone in, so giving Hooper extended minutes was a smart move by Lavin. It opened up the paint a bit and helped us get back into the game.
3) A # of bonehead plays (already mentioned by others) down the stretch that point to lack of floor leader - not coach's fault.
4) Don't understand what Lavin is doing with Sanchez and Jordan. He better find a role via which Sanchez can thrive or we will have wasted one of the more uniquely talented players that we have. As for Jordan, as I have stated in past, this kid needs to play as he represents our upside. He, once again, was visibly -- apathetic or unhappy (choose for yourself) -- riding the pine in the 2nd half. As happened in Longwood game, bench erupted at a big moment in our comeback and he did not even stand.
5) We need to recognize and respond appropriately to critical moments and need to play with more of a sense of urgency throughout the game. As noted by a previous poster, not sure why we retreated into our shell in OT when our attacking style had PSU on its heels.
6) Putting asides Jakarr taking the bait on Frazier's OBVIOUS and PREMEDITATED attempt to draw foul on the 3 pointer, having him at top of key with Pointer out was a good move.
Onto GT who looked terrible...final score is misleading...
Yeah that'll get him back into the coach's good graces after serving a suspension. Time to grow up. He was given the starting job and lost it and hasn't done anything yet to reclaim it. Pouting isn't the answer. Nothing more I'd love then to see him live up to the hype but right now it looks like he's got a lot of work to do
in 78 minutes this year he's shooting a team low 23% and is 4th in shot attempts. Not great numbers. However he does lead the team in assists. It seems his problem is he's taking too many shots and they're not going in.
We are discussing the Penn State game! He took ONE shot! In six minutes with 3 assists. Was he being punished for previous games??
Using your logic, Harrison should come off the bench (I agree) so he does not chuck up 3 pointers when not needed and by his FG %, not proficient at either.
Our 6'9 future Spanish League second division all star has taken 24 shots in six games, many from 3, so Primo is taking bone head long shots and wasting his height.
As for Hoops minutes last night, the Nittany defense was no different than previous defenses as teams pack the middle because we can't find an open shooter. So why did he sit for 5 games? Last night, he was a secret weapon?
Sampson loses focus during most games trying to get his points. Was he sitting next to Jordan? The game was won until he missed his foul shot and proceeded to foul on a 3 point attempt.
If you are going to blame players, blame the ones that played like crap and not the ones that were benched.
Right now, Phil deserves more PT than Jordan---even at the point. Hooper hit his shots last night. As a result, he got minutes. In previous games, he missed. As a result, he got benched. Seems obvious to me.
As for Sanchez, I totally agree. He has been the biggest disappointment to me thus far. He has one year to prove himself. Why is he so passive. Why is he so much more focused on taking 3's than establishing himself as a presence inside. Jordan will come around. He has enough talent. He just has to stay positive and focused. Not every freshman comes in and lights it up from day one. He has to accept that there will be a transition into playing at that level.
