Official SF Game Thread

I can't believe that kid had double digit assists.

I tell you Dunlap would yanked Amir and Phil off of the court with that stand & watch defense they were playing out there.

I think they were busy watching the game on their smartphones

On ball defenders need to move their feet and cut off the drivers angle. Too many times we are getting beat of the dribble and not recovering allowing other teams clear paths to the basket. We've gotten away with it alot because of our shot blocking but its a really bad habit. If you get beat you gotta bust your ass and get back in front of your man. In many cases this is happening and then we are forced to help leaving shooter open.

Also, Branch coming back is gonna be huge if he's as good as advertised on defense. It will allow him to guard the other point guards and put Dom back on other teams wings. This will be a good learning experience for us

About the learning experience thing.

How many games do you have to play before you stay at home on Corner 3s?

Like someone said above, that's either poor coaching or poor execution. And something fundamental like that, I'll lean towards coaching.

A number of weaknesses were exposed tonight. We were scouted to a tee. One issue was something I brought up before. Stop Harrison, and you stop St. John's. He was doubled the entire second half. When that happened, we had no guard play. None. Harrison showed the frustration. He better get used to it. Doolin took at least three different players off the dribble for lay ups. Either he is an All-American, or we made him look like one. Obviously, it's the latter. Branch can't get here soon enough. There won't be time for a breaking- in period.

Stopping Harrison becomes easy if the point guard doesn't attenpt to break their defense down and kick out...I don't know what was wrong with Greene but he was dreadful in all aspects tonight...What happened to his drives and floaters...

For anyone that recorded the game and intends to watch again (bless you)...focus on Greene on D...it was like we played 4 against 5...he just hung out...i couldnt believe how little fight he put up...very surprised...I'll chalk up to bad night

It's on again at noon tomorrow for the faint of heart.

And that's where Pointer and Greene's lack of scoring ability come into focus. On a team with more scoring options, you would hear the coach rave about Dom, saying something like "we'd never win without him." On our team though, with a lack of options, his deficians with the ball shine through too much.

Right now, we're really only a glorified version of last year's team. It's better, for several reasons. The ability to block shots, Garrett's better then he was last year, Harrison's better, but in the end, it's still Harrison, Sampson (replacing Harkless from last year), and the search for that ever elusive thrid scorer (though comparing them to this point, Sampson is ahead of where Harkless was, so even that's a bit better). That's on Lavin a bit for not plugging in the holes (though if we can get Sanchez eligible, and he's as good as advertised, Lav's off the hook).

We discussed in Charleston about finding a 3rd option (at least, a consistent one). The 3rd option was gonna be Sanchez.

I'm hoping Branch can make guys better once he comes aboard. I was hoping he could get two games (he'll miss the St. Francis game by one day) prior to conference season, but he'll get to suit up against UNC-Asheville. I hope he gets plenty of burn that particular night.

Our guards don't penetrate. Therefore our bigs don't get easy baskets.

Our bigs play high even though Jakarr could probably dominate smaller teams down low.

At some point, have to adjust, no? Coach to the player's strengths, not a team/coach philosophy?

We're a poor jump shooting team. But that's all we seem to do.

You're right, it is inexcusable and needs to be fixed. Hopefully this is a definite wake up call. We looked very uncomfortable playing on the road so i'm glad we got a true road game in before big east play

I wonder if some our astute punk comments here about second rate conferences and and mid level level teams made their way to the Don's bulletin board to get them up for the evening.

I know the quote about the trash talk reaching their bulletin board was tongue-in-cheek, but I hope you're aware those "second rate conference" quotes were coming from one person.

Doolin with 14 assists. I am going to follow the Dons next few games and see how they fair. Are they that good?Derksen did a job on Harrison. Meanwhile Louisville destroyed Charleston tonight with D, won by about 40. What a crazy college basketball year so far.

Are you referring to our mega poster?

This is the worst defense I've seen at St. John's in my life. Harrison couldn't cover my five week old son...the NBA talk is absurd. He got OWNED on the other end by that freshman who talked shite to him all second half and still go the better of him. I love the kid, but he'll never have NBA athleticism.

This game could have been much worse if Sampson wasn't hitting all of his midrange shots.

Still a long way to go and I think they will get there by February, but this is frustrating.

Well said.

And the criticism shouldn't be reserved for just Harrison. Literally everyone on the team got exposed at different times tonight.
Chris O - interior defense
Amir - couldn't hit open shots
Dom - was constantly burnt by their pg driving past him
Phil - non existent offensively, and terrible defense
etc etc

Sampson did look very good, and as the season progresses he's going to be a fun player to watch.

The quote above was also discussed in Charleston. This particular team is a smorgasboard for a penetrating guard. We're gonna have to maximize this team.

I am hoping Branch is "that" guy.

one last thing, it's not why we lost, but it's been driving me crazy..

Just once... ONCE... can D'angelo quickly throw a pass back to the guy setting a pick for him?

Every single possession D'angelo forces the drive around the pick, half the time it's not there and he's stuck driving laterally. A lot of the time he's being trapped coming off a pick.
Just once can he move the ball quickly back in the direction his pick man slipped?

It's frustrating to repeatedly see him force it.
That and his drive to the right corner. Eventually people are going to realize he only drives baseline from there, never to his left.

I'm sure you can figure it out.

He's very, right-hand dominant. I'm sure people have realized he usually goes right, but he's kinda crafty and has some size, and can somewhat get away with it on the collegiate level.

Regardless, he needs to work on his off-hand.

Stop acting like snarky high school girls. Just come out and address me. The fact remains that the WCC is a mid major conference and take the top team (Gonzaga) out and 90% of its power is gone. If you want to pretend the WCC is better than the Big East, that's fine. Every single team in the WCC would mostly fail in the Big East except Gonzaga and St. Mary's would be lucky to be a mid level Big East team. The funny part is you guys are hypocrites because if we suddenly got moved to the WCC from the Big East, you would be the same ones screaming about how pathetic a conference it is and how much it decreases our respect and brand. The Big East was and is better and that shouldn't even be a question. The WCC is extremely top loaded. It has 3 teams fighting at the top and the drop off after that is almost unbelievable. You are high if you think SF would stomp through a real conference. As I've said 1 million times falling on deaf ears, the term mid major does not refer to how good you are. It refers to competition level aka conference. If Providence was in the WCC they would consistently finish 2nd or 3rd. Same goes for Seton Hall and DePaul might be a mid level team there. This isn't college football...anything can happen any given day. We had a terrible game both offensively and defensively, now let's collect ourselves and respond. It's much easier to watch the team assuming we won't make the NIT or NCAA's. You just know some teams will sleep on us and we will erupt a few games especially if we get Sanchez. The only way this loss really kills us is if we are on the bubble and I don't expect that.

They were favored.
Not an upset.
I'll stick with my 16-14 record.
Team just isn't good enough.[/quote]

my prediction of 20-10, 10-8 isn`t gonna happen, even if they did win the last 3 ooc and still went 10-8 that`s 19-11. 10-8 was probably pushing it, turn that aroundto 8-10. To me and this is just my opinion but anything less then 17 wins is a failure. We should be able to some how get 4 more wins then last years 13.

If we had Sanchez how would the these first 9 have turned out? He was called our best player and lost by only 7 to Murray state, if we would have won that we would have played colorado st. instead of playing Baylor. Maybe he would have carried us over SF tonight. Yeah the what if game right. Yeah oh well life goes on.

But I do really wonder if just for one season just one freaking season if everything would go right for us. Have no bs everyone of our players play and have a full roster.
If we get Lawrence I won`t get happy until I actually see him playing a game for us.

Just look what Doolin did to us, penetrating, passing, assisting and directing the Dons to victory. Absolutely need a point guard, hopefully Branch will be the guy.

Ok what I saw tonight was a group of freshmen and soph who are lost in there own zone defense and who were schooled by a 5 year senior(Parker JC from San Francisco city college and a year at UCLA)and a senior point guard Doolin,

Still, we need his offense. If we allow Big East teams to stop Harrison then forget about it. Talk about poor shooters; Oh yeh, I forgot we're loaded with athletes.

Beginning to wonder about our so called super coaching staff; we continue to leave the three point shooters to help as opposing teams penetrate. Hard to believe Harrison and Obepka switched having Chris guarding Doolin; both had time to switch back. Unfortunately, Doolin drove to the basket and scored.
