Official SF Game Thread

SF really isn't THAT good, our defense just had its worst game all year and let a mid major team shoot 50% and 60% from 3. SF is by no means a juggernaut. They played the game of their lives and will likely shoot 30% from 3 the next game. Anyone can get hot on any given night. Had to expect that we lose at least 1 of these OOC games other than Murray or Baylor, so let's win the rest and we are in a good spot.

They were favored.
Not an upset.
I'll stick with my 16-14 record.
Team just isn't good enough.
Better watch out posting stuff like this...Although I think we can win more than 7 BE games.

so much for beating a mid major right.

They can shoot 100% every game and still be a mid major. If we shoot like they did today we can beat anyone. Any team can have a scorching hot day shooting and USF had theirs. We were ice cold and gave up 3's with no one within 10 feet of them. Any team would have capitalized on that, not just SF. This is a game our defense lost more than SF showed it was some sort of juggernaut. SF still won't be in the tourney so who cares. Let's focus on us, not them. As I said we had to expect 1 awful game we drop against a worse team. This was it. Now let's win the rest and we will be ok. By the way, can you imagine how many 3's Heslip would have made against us tonight? Maybe 12. When you're hot you're hot. SF will cool off significantly per the law of averages. What we need to worry about is the next opponent.

This is NOT a tournament team. Will be destroyed in the BE this year.

Might be lucky to get to NIT if can pull out a couple of wins in BE

Really?

Agree with RedStorm80 - too early to write the team off just yet... we still don't even know who's going to be on our final roster... We have pieces, but need to tighten up some things..

A number of weaknesses were exposed tonight. We were scouted to a tee. One issue was something I brought up before. Stop Harrison, and you stop St. John's. He was doubled the entire second half. When that happened, we had no guard play. None. Harrison showed the frustration. He better get used to it. Doolin took at least three different players off the dribble for lay ups. Either he is an All-American, or we made him look like one. Obviously, it's the latter. Branch can't get here soon enough. There won't be time for a breaking- in period.

By the way, not every open 3 is made. To shoot 60% from 3 even wide open is pretty damn good. I'd say it's 90% our terrible defense and 10% luck that the shots were falling. We do get some guys open for 3's at times and we don't make them. They clunk off the rim. If we have a day shooting the 3 like Baylor or SF did against us we can knock off a Duke or anyone else really.

We weren't out-rebounded today! We are improving at our deficiencies an exponential rate... :woohoo:

This is the worst defense I've seen at St. John's in my life. Harrison couldn't cover my five week old son...the NBA talk is absurd. He got OWNED on the other end by that freshman who talked shite to him all second half and still go the better of him. I love the kid, but he'll never have NBA athleticism.

This game could have been much worse if Sampson wasn't hitting all of his midrange shots.

Still a long way to go and I think they will get there by February, but this is frustrating.

I hate to put a lot of pressure on him, but you're right....a lot hinges on Branch.
I think as the season goes by, JaKarr will take a lot of the pressure off Harrison much like Harkless did last year.

I'm not excusing it, but there was a lack of focus tonight, that attributes to some of the factors I previously pointed out, that I do not anticipate being a factor once the BE season starts. A lot of their offense is gonna be spotty. Guys like Obepka, Garrett, Greene and Balamou all have to become consistent. It takes time. Frankly, if Pointer can play the type of defense I think he can play, I don't care how many points he scores.

We'll be fine. Nights like this will happen when our roster is constituted as it is.

Stopping Harrison becomes easy if the point guard doesn't attenpt to break their defense down and kick out...I don't know what was wrong with Greene but he was dreadful in all aspects tonight...What happened to his drives and floaters...

For anyone that recorded the game and intends to watch again (bless you)...focus on Greene on D...it was like we played 4 against 5...he just hung out...i couldnt believe how little fight he put up...very surprised...I'll chalk up to bad night

oh yeah we lost in the black uniforms again. usf really kept d'lo in check virtually making him a non presence. we need marco or some other three point shooters to keep the defense honest.

Really?

Those are emotional posts after losing a game. Especially, after losing a game, in which one thought we were the better team.

There is plenty of work to be done with this team.... No doubt about it. But, one can never be so sure what is in store.

We could very, well struggle, and from what I've witnessed so far, it wouldn't be surprising. We could very, well play well, and I also wouldn't be surprised.

I hope Branch is the point guard that sets up his teammates; value the ball; play solid defense; and be a leader on the floor. If he's those things, and can give us about 9 points per game, then we'll be fine.

Hopefully, we can also get Sanchez. He's gonna bring skill (which, we need), size, and experience.

I'm far from panicking, but tonight left a sour taste in my mouth.

And that's where Pointer and Greene's lack of scoring ability come into focus. On a team with more scoring options, you would hear the coach rave about Dom, saying something like "we'd never win without him." On our team though, with a lack of options, his deficians with the ball shine through too much.

Right now, we're really only a glorified version of last year's team. It's better, for several reasons. The ability to block shots, Garrett's better then he was last year, Harrison's better, but in the end, it's still Harrison, Sampson (replacing Harkless from last year), and the search for that ever elusive thrid scorer (though comparing them to this point, Sampson is ahead of where Harkless was, so even that's a bit better). That's on Lavin a bit for not plugging in the holes (though if we can get Sanchez eligible, and he's as good as advertised, Lav's off the hook).

A very disappointing loss to a team that beat us in every facet of the game. Beat us like a drum. Doolin was better than anyone on our team and our defense, whether Zone or Man , is just awful.

I think Lavin is 0-3 vs St.Mary's, Gonzaga and now, USF IN HIS 3 YEARS...As a Coach during this game, he seemingly had no strategic plan to try and change or adjust to what USF DID AT WILL.If he did have a plan, our players could not execute it and that's a problem.

It will be a long, long trip home after this loss .. Unless Branch is the second coming of Erick Barkley, which is doubtful, it can be a difficult BE season.

Sampson played well, the rest not so well. Fordham and Ashville, St Francis should be w's but, we need to play better team ball.

I can't believe that kid had double digit assists.

Nights like this I wish we had a Mike Dunlap clone because our defensive fundamentals are horrendous. You have got to love switching on pick & rolls but not rotating your Center back and just leaving him guarding the PG.

I tell you Dunlap would yanked Amir and Phil off of the court with that stand & watch defense they were playing out there.

On ball defenders need to move their feet and cut off the drivers angle. Too many times we are getting beat of the dribble and not recovering allowing other teams clear paths to the basket. We've gotten away with it alot because of our shot blocking but its a really bad habit. If you get beat you gotta bust your ass and get back in front of your man. In many cases this is happening and then we are forced to help leaving shooter open.

Also, Branch coming back is gonna be huge if he's as good as advertised on defense. It will allow him to guard the other point guards and put Dom back on other teams wings. This will be a good learning experience for us

It was a four credit course from Princeton U. and a credit to Coach Pete Carrill ( and young John Thompson) on how to run an offense. It was beautiful. They took our defense out of the game from the opening tip.
It really pains me to lose but it was a spectacular show by SF one of the best performances I have seen in a few years. They had more back doors than a cat house.
I wonder if some our astute punk comments here about second rate conferences and and mid level level teams made their way to the Don's bulletin board to get them up for the evening. Swagger sometimes has it's consequences. Congratulations SF.
