Off Season Tidbits

Jack & Panther:

You guys predate me by a couple of years as the first World Series I remember following passionately on my transistor radio was the Yankee - Pirate one in 1960 where Mazeroski's homer broke our hearts. My older sister was a fanatical Dodgers fan, my older brother a Giant fan so of course I would up a Yankee fan lol. But love reading your posts as I agree baseball was a beautiful sport in those days; no specialists, just players.

My dad had tickets to Don Larson's perfect game in 1956. My mom would not let me take off from school to attend the game. Something I never forgave her.

Every time I see Yogi Berra meandering back to the left field wall in Forbes Field tracking Mazeroski's long fly ball home run I hope he catches it at the wall so we can reassemble everyone back there to pick up the game at that point. :silly: Have been hoping Yanks would have opportunity to avenge that series loss to the Pirates as well as the 1964 7 game series loss to the Cardinals.

Yanks lost because Stengel didn't star Whitey Ford in game one. He would have pitched game seven and a sure win, as Pirates could not touch him in the two games he did start.

This post reminds me of when baseball was my favorite sport. In 1960 my father took me to see the All Star game at Yankee Stadium and I thought I was in Heaven. Think bleacher seats were $2.50, lol.

The American League had Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Early Wynn, Elston Howard, Brooks Robinson, Luis Apparicio, Al Kaline and Ted Williams.

The National League had Bill Mazweoski, Eddie Matthews, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Johnny Podres, Mike McCormick, Bill White, Charlie Neal, Orlando Cepada, Roberto Clemente, and Stan Musial. There were others on each team but these were my heroes as a youth.

Those were the days.
They sure were Panther. I believe it was 1951 when the Phillies were playing a playoff game against the Dodgers at Ebbets Field. My brother asked me if we should go. Are you kidding no chance to get tickets, Wrong! We were able to buy bleacher seats for $1.00. During the season they went for $.60. Robin Roberts against one of my favorite Dodgers, Don Newcombe. Tied game going into the ninth Abrams on second as Billy Cox lines a single to center. Ashburn throws a rocket to home and cuts down Abrams. Dick Sisler hits an opposite homer to left and Phillies advance to the world Series. I cried all the way home - a die hard Brooklyn Dodger fan.
Jack, do you remember Happy Felton's Knothole Gang? Sports were so much more fun during those days. Little League baseball, summer basketball. All Star games in both sports. It brought people together. I remember playing night games at Eintracht Oval in Astoria. This generation of kids is really missing out.
I sure do. Always was impressed with the size of the gloves they gave the kids. Panther did you ever play at Astoria Park? Today's kids miss out on stick ball, fast pitching against the handball court, and Stonwall Jackson. We were able to round up 18 guys to play stick ball at the public school sometimes using a brand new tennis ball, making it difficult to get distance but leading to very close games. Those were the days!

For me, an unabashed Yankee "hater", seeing Maz's HR was poetry in motion
One of the happiest sports moments I have ever witnessed
Maz was a good fielder but an average hitter at best
That HR propelled him into the HOF

interesting that he could have star potential even though he wasn't a 4 star. didn't think that was possible

Not to mention he's not 6'11" and doesn't weigh 240.
