Off Season Tidbits

So apparently Phavre Phan of Twitter has a podcast now. Why does this matter? He had Cragg on one episode. Who is this guy? He's confusing a lot of people...he's a troll making up rumors that coaches fought LoVett one minute and doing a lot of damage to our hashtag and then has our AD on? Cragg probably has no idea what he does. Personally I don't care, but he should at least be consistent. At least be a troll account, or be a semi-serious fan. Sorry if this ticks people off, just slow season and figured this falls under "tidbits".

I've disliked this Phavre Phan guy for the past few years because he clogs the #sjubb hashtag with a bunch of nonsense and also provided some awful takes (such as Ponds returning next year).

That said, his podcast is legitimately good and I've listened to all 12 episodes. His sarcastic attitude is a lot more interesting in a podcast form than his Twitter feed. Today he had Jeff Goodman on. I disagree with his take on CMA, but still an interesting listen.

Don't doubt there are funny moments, but using the language and trolly nature he does, not so sure I'd be thrilled if I was a higher up at SJU to be tied in any way to that. IMO you can be sarcastic but also present yourself as a legitimate SJ fan coming out with a cool podcast. Having Brett Favre and a name like Phavre Phan but purporting to be a big SJ fan but also a troll is just odd IMO. It would be like a guy named HoosierFan with an Indiana player as his avatar and a trolling background starting a podcast on the Detroit Lions. Phavre is behind a ton of "SJ fan" accounts on Twitter. Some are funny, I'll admit, just it's just bizarre IMO. Not sure I've ever heard of a troll hosting a podcast and having legitimate people willing to come on.

Yeah, I'm surprised that legitimate people have come on but I find that he has handled his guests fine. His demeanor is completely different depending on who he interviews. His Mike Cragg and John Fanta interviews were respectful and more traditional, while his interviews with others (such as Jeff Goodman or any of his St. John's friends) go off the rails but his guests always seem fine with it.

As for branding, yeah he should pivot to something besides Phavre but that doesn't impact the quality. I like his intros/outros (classic rock covers overlaid with his own lyrics) and overall the production is very impressive considering he just started.

Again, I certainly have not been a fan of his but I do think his podcast is solid and he seems mature enough to understand his guest/audience. Unless that changes then I have no problem with the podcast and think it could help St. John's overall.

Seriously can't believe it has taken this long for the school to hire a sports nutritionist. This is what it looks like to have a real AD who understands how to win.

For years we have talked about how the players never seemed to be developing physically. Working out is just half the battle. Maybe this was overlooked.[/quote]

Ba humbug. In my day when playing high school and college sports we hit the weights all day, took a multivitamin and slugged down that awful weight gainer and peanut butter sandwiches. Worked just fine, packed on plenty of muscle and practiced any excess fat off.

So, I'm guessing that when they do those thumbnail profiles of the players they will no longer be asking them their favorite candy, desert and ice cream flavors.

Not trying to start WWIII here, just figured many of you would be interested. A recent former player gave me some insight on the Mullin era. Apparently Mullin showed up late consistently, no one on the staff even tried except St. Jean (who still wasn't very good but at least tried) and Matt A. Mitch really did do nothing as we suspected. Noted that the staff were good guys but clueless overall. Disorganized, dysfunctional, etc. Also noted that staff left immediately after the NCAA loss and that was the last they saw of them. Just ridiculous really. The former player also said that he thinks this current staff is very good and a massive improvement. Just interesting to hear directly FWIW.

Mullin was a GREAT figurehead for the program. I guess that was it.

This is important and I hope people don't start running to this post saying we need to stop looking back and talking about the last regime. A former player is affirming things that were mentioned multiple times. It's ridiculous how this was swept under the rug for so long. With proper leadership it could have been nipped in the beginning and who knows where we would be today. Instead they let it go and go and go until the cord had to be cut.

Good post Mike.

To me it was very clear how unprofessional the Mullin regime was when Matt A left. Matt A went here and it was a dream of his to make this schools basketball team a winner again. For him to bow out and go live in freaking Nebraska, he must have been fed up

Big East X factor guy;

St. John’s – Greg Williams Jr., Sophomore, 6-foot-3

Williams played in 28 games as a freshman, but only averaged eight minutes in those contests. Expect that minutes-load to rise as Mike Anderson enters his first season. Word out of Queens is that Williams has made strides in the offseason. Williams did shoot 20-of-40 from the field as a freshman and was regarded as someone who could provide a defensive lift, but with little sample size, it was tough to know what his full capabilities could be for the Johnnies. There’s no question Williams will get an opportunity to become a backcourt staple this season.
