Off Season Tidbits

I appreciate all of the optimism here, but I also know that once the Big East season starts every game, home and away, will be difficult to win. For those reasons, I believe the high water mark for this team will be 15 or 16 wins max, and more likely to be in the 12-14 overall wins range.

For me it is much more important that they show signs of being a well coached disciplined team that works hard on defense, get good looks on offense, protect the ball, and run when the opportunity presents itself. If all that happens, will be satisfied even in a rough season.

If they overshoot my gut projections on this, will be pretty happy.

Have to see CMA s coaching, teams stamina and chemistry. Also need to get a solid recruiting class for 20. Want to see an upward trajectory.

Last warning, leave your twitter problems out of this site.
Thank you.[/quote]

LOL ok - with all the crap on here, "unblock me on twitter" is what triggers folks? Was just joking. I will abide - apologies i did not see the prior warnings.

There is really no basis to expect more then what you outlined above. I am hoping Coach can pull out one more .500 season which would be an accomplishment.

Got a brief Q&A interview with Sear a few days ago. Seems like a great kid...if interested check it out on Storm Surge twitter page (formerly Mullin's Maniacs but changed name for obvious reasons). Tried to get it and paste here but wasn't working.

I think that is going to be tough since you've blocked half the fan base. My favorite blocking was when someone told you to stop tweeting at a potential recruit and then you blocked them. funny stuff.

A well coached, disciplined team
+ works hard on defense
+ get good looks on offense
+ protects the ball
+ runs when the opportunity presents itself
= an NCAA team.

We are not having a rough season if we do all those things.

I don't think CMA suffers his first losing season. And I don't think he'll put up with guys taking plays off or acting too cool for school. Anything on top of that is gravy for me this season.

Well, I see your point but disagree. Archbishop Molloy does all those things, but wouldn't win a single game in the Big East. Playing fundamentally sound basketball will keep losses closer and might steal a win here and there, but won't overcome the overall talent and height deficit that we hope MA will recruit.

Maybe using a college program similar in profile to St. John's as an example would have made more sense?

I am thinking my local team Davidson, while in a conference a rung below the BE, might be a better example. They are extremely well coached, albeit more offensively than defensively oriented than MA's teams, but at some point superior talent/athletes wins out over excellent coaching. The thing with this year's SJU team is there are so many unknowns from a BE talent perspective as most of our guys have not played significant minutes in the league. Not only that, there are still questions as to eligibility for Steere & Dunn. I am going to wait until 11/1 to hazard a guess as to regular season record. But definitely optimistic that we will be fun to watch and on the upswing going forward.

More like 50 or so of the most annoying people who constantly insult and act like wise arses with personal attacks instead of discussing basketball. Much of the SJ fan twitter accounts tweet at recruits and is the norm although I avoid it mostly. You don't know the half of it, trust me...and I'm not saying that aggressively. People on Twitter say the most vile things. Whenever some people try to do good, there will always be haters...always. That's one valuable lesson I learned. Also keep in mind it's not just me but my friend as well running it so I can't account for every block. If you want to talk about funny things, how about acting like our account Tweeting out something along the lines of, "You could've been great here" was solely responsible for Brooks de-committing when he was already out the door well before that? I mean, just stupidity and the antithesis of logic. Some people are just out to start trouble and others don't. Guess which type gets blocked? Do you realize we spent over $500 of our own money for the Villanova pre-game meetup just for the wings that we gave out for free...for hours? I'm not asking for thank yous because we wanted to do that, but silly to paint people who do that kind of thing as some kind of villain.

Sorry for the rant, just can't let that go unchallenged. Nothing personal towards you, just frustrating with all the double-standards and lies. By the way, we want to look into some meetups again. Feel free to come have a beer...critics and fans alike.

Mike, if you really want to form a strong community, just unblock everyone. We're all on the same team. #sjubb is a mess, but there aren't 50 accounts on there worth blocking. I have 190K followers online (tech YouTube channel) and never blocked anyone, because they'll just make new accounts and double down. I read awful comments daily, but I don't engage and 99.9% of the time they get bored and I never see them again. Just simply ignore them and they'll go away. You need to have thick skin on social media because otherwise the trolls will come for you. I agree there are a few trolls on #sjubb.

Some of the criticism towards you is also valid. 95% of the time you're fine, but you do get angry and during those times you are very frustrating to deal with on Redmen and Holy Land (I don't follow you on Twitter but I'm aware of a few Tweets you shouldn't have sent out). You can't make an account claiming to represent St. John's fans and then block a large portion of the fanbase. What if fans are interested in reading the interview you just promoted on Redmen, but can't read your Tweet because you blocked them? That's not actually a "what if" question because it just happened, and we're too niche of a community for that to happen. It's a new era so now's a good time to unblock everyone and live up to your stated mission. That, or just post the interview in full here.

Just genuinely curious, what's an example of "getting angry"? Maybe years ago, can't see it recently. You make some good and fair points but it just becomes exhausting after a while. I'm also very aware of tweets that many, many others shouldn't have sent out, however I don't jump down their throats. It's selective criticism and an obvious double-standard. If someone just jaywalked in front of a cop and then you try doing the same but get a ticket, would you not be annoyed? Just asking for some consistency. If one random SJ fan on twitter tweets at a recruit no matter how positive, condemn them too, because that's the standard you've set (not you personally, just critics). I believe there's an account Redmen News among tons of others which I actually enjoy...they do a great job. They privately messaged Tabor on Instagram. Didn't see one soul condemn that, rather celebrate it. People should just get past their biases and be consistent all around. TBH I'm actually more forgiving than the other person I share the account with regarding blocking. You just have to consider the fact that after spending literally thousands of your own money and countless hours of effort, it's hard to allow time for trolls and those clearly looking for trouble. If you're blocked and truly feel it was unwarranted, feel free to get in touch. Some of you have afforded me a second chance and of course I will do the same. Just wish some of the critics saw how much we've done behind the scenes before casting stones.

Adam- you are straight on 100 percent.....

Personally I was blocked because I asked this guy to stop tweeting at recruits. I am not losing any sleep on it....... but that confirms how sensitive you are that you would block someone for that type of minor criticism that is not even personal. So I can only imagine what other people were blocked for

Also, to note, I was a vocal proponent of you being reinstated on here.

Mike Z., I'm twitter challenged. Could you provide the highlights of your brief interview with Damien Sears? Thanks!
