Obekpa and weed

Important to give each player a somewhat clean slate under a new coach. Doesn't mean anything is going to change, but it's a fresh opportunity which can be important. This goes for both Obekpa and CJ.

With CO it's pretty simple. Can he stay on track off the court, develop an offensive game and more consistency, and go to an even higher level under Mullin.

CJ might be a case that has a wider range under a new coach. I really do see both sides, the upside/potential and the frustration that he hasn't demonstrated an ability to tap into it in his time here.

His time under Lavin always just seemed a little off. He goes from unheralded recruit, to all sorts of hype from Lavin prior to his first year, to starting his first college game, to appearing in over 20 games as a freshman, to red-shirting his second year, to not really getting off the bench as a red-shirt sophomore.

I'm not assigning any blame - to staff or CJ - but that is not a normal path and one that can really impact a player's confidence. I have no knowledge of how things transpired between staff and player, but from the outside this is the exact type of situation where a player could benefit from a fresh start. Not that he's going to turn into Roosevelt Jones, but maybe he can become a contributor.

Good post, many know that I am Jones' biggest fan. Two more years left with a head Coach who seemingly got every ounce of talent he had out of himself. Hopefully Chris does the same for Christian.

Marillac was the only one on that thread that saw the emperor had no clothes. Kid is soft...best to have a mutual parting of ways. He's never rebounded at any level. He's not Chris' type of player.

You were indeed, and that has definitely played out.

On the flip side, the last third-year player you recommended a mutual parting of ways with was SDP, and look how that played out.

Which Marillac should new staff prioritize here? :cheer:

Marillac didn't want that parting to be so mutual last year :)

The big difference between disappointment on the two players is that Sir Dom possessed otherwordly gifts and talent and had a nose for the ball but was being used so improperly it was egregious. It made Marillac sick to see him standing on the perimeter motionless guarding PGs--both Marillac and Amaseinyour face posted for years that he was better guarding forwards. Jones, on the other hand, isn't being used improperly. He just isn't as good and doesn't have nose for the ball.

Credit there man, but its never been his potential as a rebounder which made me like him. Its his game 15 ft and in that I thought could be very serviceable. Good feet (bad hands for sure) and nice mid range jumper. His chances this year were almost exclusively at the center position (something he definitely is not) where he was over matched as a rim protector and also asked to switch on to pg's off screens. Wasn't put in a position to succeed. You have said over and over again that bigs take longer to develop, could this not be the case with him? He has a nice touch and great athleticism. As alligator as it may be ;).

PS with the redshirt year he would lose a year of eligibility if he were to transfer.

Bigs take longer to develop...that is very true. That has more to do skill development--which isn't an issue with Jones. Jones is very skilled. Plus, Jones, at 6'7, having played SF most of his career really doesn't fit in that category.

The first thing I look at is how kids get after the ball. Skill can be developed, but nose for the ball and natural instincts in any sport are nearly impossible to teach. He loses any ball that somebody else even gets a finger on.

Was completely kidding. SDP and Jones are clearly not similar situations as you noted.

I'm pretty indifferent on CJ. I'd like to see us try to get something out of a kid with that build and athleticism if we can. And he has shown flashes, however fleeting. Mullin's approach to the game may be just what he needs to tap into that potential more consistently. He also seems like a good kid, as he's stuck it out here despite the ups and downs.

At the same time if staff and player decide it's best for him to move on it's not something to lose sleep over. Could be best for both parties. Trust Mullin will make right call here.

I thought he gave us a few good mins vs SD St, and was surprised Lavin didnt put him back in the game in the 2nd half when SD St got easy lay up after easy lay up.
Maybe Lavin didn't want to see easy dunk after easy dunk and at least hoped SD ST would miss an easy lay up or two.

that's a WOW look at what people were freaking posting thread. lol

I cringed while going through it praying I didn't post on it :)

Credit to Redmannorth and Marillac for being the only ones to call this one correctly.

Also sad to hear that after reading this thread Jay Wright withdrew his scouting job position to Otis :)

Here's a write up from ESPN on draft prospects who are either in or out:

Chris Obekpa, C, Jr., St. John's, F, Jr.,
Obekpa is one of the most talented shot blockers in college basketball. He's an athlete of NBA caliber and has a 7-foot-4 wingspan, but his lack of offensive production and so-so rebounding numbers speak to a low basketball IQ still. Another year playing at St. John's under Chris Mullin should help him move into a potential second-round pick in 2016.

Brutal but seems like a fair analysis.

You should have read their analysis of Daunte Smith Rivera when he was in the draft. A quote:

But he's undersized for his position (6-3), isn't an elite athlete and doesn't really have an elite NBA skill. There are 25 guards in college just like him. He's likely to go undrafted.

I think the Mullin staff will help CO, if he comes back with an improved attitude. He could easily rise into the 1st round.

Yes and CO should read it and weep! Or better read it and hope! And take advantage of his great opportunity!!!
Wow...

Although his basketball IQ is low, I don't think he'll ever be a great rebounder, anyway. Has very small hands for a guy his size.

If I'm Chris Mullin, this would be all I would need to hear about CO given his behavior at key moments on this team.

Not sure you're coming back? I'm sure.....you won't be back

For what it's worth I know someone that spoke with obekpa the other day on campus and he told him that he was staying on the team.

Fwiw, spoke with Felix on Tuesday, and he said that CO was coming back for sure but that Sheed was still up in the air.
