NIL

I respectfully ask my fellow Redmem.comers to step up and support StJohn’s NIL efforts by donating $9.99 per month.

Without an ability to assist potential recruits quality reexruits will go where they will receive assistance; existing StJs players will become the transfer targets of other programs.

Each player on a rival Big East team is rumored to be receiving $20,000 NIL each year as walking around money.

Please consider spending $9.99 per month to help keep StJohn competitive.

Just my honest opinion and please do not take offense to my cynicism.

Its a little confusing. The "Subscription" doesn't put money in their pockets it goes toward enhancing NIL activities. Not sure what that even means. Is the money going to a company that will then hire the players as influencers who will then make money off our "Subscriptions".

I want these peeps to get the $$$. I don't want to finance a marketing company. I'm sure that this company has good intentions and I am completely not impugning them as we are not that big a program and the money received will not be as enormous as the blue bloods, but...
I have a feeling in a few years we are going to see that this whole system will be ripe with fraud.

Fizzy ...... The reality is that the NCAA does not allow the colleges to pay the athletes directly so it is necessary that a third party collect the money and the third party pay the athlete directly. That is how it is done.

St. John's cannot pay the athletes directly. Hopefully the St. John's Athletic Department has vetted this company.

The biggest problem that AD Cragg faces is lack of money.

The NIL system is a relatively easy way for the Redmen.comers to support St.John's athletes for a relatively small monthly fee.

Unfortunately the culture of the St. John's fanbase has not been one of generosity.

Not specific to SJU/NIL, but reality to me is that its now just allowed payouts instead of under the table, under the guise that there is a lot of collaboration, marketing, social media influence etc. Minus a few big names in college sports, I've really yet to see any notable joint marketing (again not specific to SJU).

While I appreciate what these companies are doing and players making $, I just don't think I could bring myself to NIL type donation.

I do think the schools athletic fundraising will take a hit as same donors might shift where checks get made out to.

Again St. John's will lose out on recruits without competitive NIL, and St. John's players will transfer if given the ability to obtain greater WAM ("walking around money").

The below link includes a good summary of what other programs are doing

I completely get that they can't get paid directly but it is basically donating to a PAC where there is very little control of the cash that they collect.

I think it is great if people want to give to the NIL program. I am all for giving us any advantage to lure players. I assume that most of the money the marketing company receives will be used to sell companies on the commodity of SJU BB.

We really need the big donors / very successful Alumni to get on board with the NIL. If they are the "Seatbackers" with the cash it would behoove them to get a better product on the court and take advantage of the promotion of their businesses.

The fan base has been disenfranchised for pretty much since the Artest teams. Season tickets go up and quality goes down. That does not breed generosity from working class folks.

Gotta get that Vitamin Water Johnny Flavor!

the below article provides an an example of NIL money being paid to basketball players at D1 schools wherein it states that members of the SMU men’s basketball team will receive $36,000 walking around money, from its fan based entity “Boulevard Collective”

we need a red.fans NIL :)
If this guy was worth 800,000 I don’t see any reason why SJU couldn’t muster up 500,000 in NIL loot to keep Julian around for another year. Just imagine if he was still here with all the other recruits still on board minus Keita. 🤔

I have no clue of the current state of affairs and relationship between Repole and the program. But if he's as big of an SJU diehard as it seems, you'd have to think they'd be reaching out to get him involved in this and he would be extremely interested in doing so given his enormous personal wealth. I don't like to spend other people's money - that is their right, regardless of how much they have. And I have no idea what Repole may have contributed in the past and what frustrations he may have had with past administrations. But I know he thinks highly of our A.D. -- he said so publicly -- and I've heard him say good things about Anderson as well.

While I intend on contributing to SJU's NIL stuff via the link in this thread, and am fortune to do pretty well financially, I'm not in Repole's stratsophere. If I had that type of $, I'd be heavily involved in supporting SJU athletes and our basketball program in particular.

NIL has completely changed the landscape of college sports. We would posted this in a separate thread, but it fits here as well. We would be happy to host a Zoom or Happy Hour to introduce the Storm Marketing team, answer any questions, and to talk SJU hoops. To date, we have given 16 NIL deals to St. John's University student athletes and look forward to announcing more soon.

I was telling nycredmen you should consider doing couple of away game watch parties combined with giving info on your NIL efforts on long island etc when the season starts

Thank you for the suggestion! We will definitely be having some pre and post game parties for home games. Depending on demand, we can certainly set them up for away games as well.

We will also be hosting an autograph signing near campus in mid-October. Details forthcoming!
