Niagara, Wed. Dec. 9, 5pm, FS1 & 970AM

Few things about Mullin tonight.

Right around the first TV timeout, Rohrssen said something to him ( I think it was regarding Johnson's lack of hustle getting back on a break). Chris yanked him like whiplash.

Camera on him during in bounds play or free throw at Niagara's end, not sure which.
My lips read, "Dave, What the Fuck?"

Near the end, as the team walked toward him during a time out when they couldn't in bound the ball, he got in M'Vouika's face and asked "What did I just tell you?"
As M'Vouika remained silent, Chris again yelled "What did I just tell you?"

After the handshake, he looked over toward where the team files out and gave somebody some shit.

It's fun watching my idol evolve into a college basketball coach.
It was good to see him try to light some fire under the kids...he was yelling at Balamou at the end for putting up that shot (which is the opposite of Mullin not inbounding the ball against Gtown)...think team is a bit wild for his taste

Hopefully, no recruits were watching tonight. In fact I'm sorry I was watching. Talk about ugly. Perhaps Mullin might want to have Mussini take the ball out of bounds and get the ball back. Obviously Amar and Jones were lacking.

Deservingly so he yelled , " Felix, kick it out." I was surprised Chris didn't stop and say something to Casey at the end of the game, just shook his hand.

Matt A puts game in perspective;

A win is a win is a win. I was once I told you can never complain after a win. A lot to improve on but love the direction we r headed #sjubb

Matt A is right, a win is a win. Hopefully they learn not to pick up their dribble against the press unless they're going to pass the ball immediately. Hopefully they learn and improve from this game. 6 - 3 we move on. Mussini's shot was horrible tonight even when he had time to set himself. We need him to hit shots against that Syracuse zone. The question is, who do we put at the foul line against that zone to move the ball around and play through like Lavin did with Pointer? I think Sima is our best bet. He passes very well for big man.

You need a passer and someone who can pop from the foul line. Mullin probably will have Jones and Johnson rotate to the line. Even Balamou might get the assignment, may not have the shot but certainly has the mobility to handle it.

I think Felix picked the wrong sport. He would have made a great running back. He can beat guys off the dribble easily, utilizing his great quickness and a nice crossover. The problem is he starts on the right side, and crosses to his left, and goes airborne to the left of the basket, trying to elevate and shoot across his body. In football, ending up on the ground after a nice move like that is fine. Here, Felix gets caught in the air and has a problem finishing. It is still impressive that he can beat his man off the dribble even though you don't have to respect his jumper at all.

Being out coached tonight.

Really? Niagara stunk, they stunk a little more than we did in as ugly and poorly played game by both teams as there can be. Casey did nothing to distinguish himself, neither did Mullin because pretty much every player on the court stunk except for maybe Balamou's 1st half but he got in the spirit snd stunk in the 2nd half.

I thought the press and the way they executed it was good. We have guys that don't know when they can move their feet on an inbound. Our guys look at each other not knowing who is going to throw the ball in. Ridiculous.

How many times have you seen a guy forget he is not throwing in after a made basket and walking, it happens. For whatever reason you want to equate an ugly game by an extremely inexperienced, marginally talented team at best with poor coaching while giving credit to a coach whose team played even worse. Sorry, just not buying it. We sucked, we won, move on. It will take a couple of years to judge this coaching staff and 90% of that will be based on recruiting as with any staff.

“Most of them are freshmen, most of them are in this country for the first time,” Mullin said. “I’m not quite sure this shouldn’t be this way. What are you really going to expect?

“That doesn’t mean we don’t keep pushing and keep working them. But you look at the facts, you go, ‘Oh, yeah, that makes sense.’ If you don’t, I would say you’re being unrealistic.”

First let me say I have a great deal of confidence in this coaching staff. However, they did not shine in this contest. I did not see ingame adjustments, nor new plan at the half. Niagara adjusted and made a game of it. Do you absolve the coaches and their decisions completely?

the game was ugly to say the least, but besides shooting, I think the lack of crisp passing was the thing most noticeable. A double team means someone is open.....crisp passing to work it to the open man...sorry thats my CYO speech....lol

You may believe that we were outcoached, but I don't think so. SJU was putrid for 90% of the game, yet Casey couldn't find a way to win. You could see Mullin's patience wearing thin, as he knows the deficiencies the team has, and harps on them in practice over and over. Casey was wise to throw traps and presses at SJU. Then again, a grade school coach could see we have no real pg and limited other options to handle the ball. Getting a win out of your team when they play like garbage is a sign you did something right as a coach.

Ray, I thought that we could have handled the press much better. A time out and some instruction could have solved that. This was our 9th game and not the first time that we had trouble dealing with a press. Got to be able to deal with a press from a Niagara team that is not exactly a defensive juggernaut.

By that standard Norm and Lavin are HoF bound.

That being said I agree with CM's end of interview comment - these are freshmen and new comers to America and all a team that is still learning to gel without the player who was predicted to be the best player on the court. I think a lot of patience and a few extra beers/shots are in order for this year on the part of the fan base.

Fair enough. I guess I'm too sensitive to criticism about Mullin. The difference between Lavin and Mullin is the talent level they had available. If Lavin had this team, they would be lucky to have 1 win, and we would have had to hear a lot of post game B.S. from the king of B.S.

Mullin has discussed how they work extensively on drills to get open, and added they do well in practice, do well in scrimmages, and then revert back to bad habits in games. I doubt Coach could have fixed that in a timeout. Lucky that he left the team with some timeouts to use when trapped. I can recall them saving a turnover on 2 occasions by using the timeouts on those occasions.
