Niagara, Wed. Dec. 9, 5pm, FS1 & 970AM

Being out coached tonight.

Really? Niagara stunk, they stunk a little more than we did in as ugly and poorly played game by both teams as there can be. Casey did nothing to distinguish himself, neither did Mullin because pretty much every player on the court stunk except for maybe Balamou's 1st half but he got in the spirit snd stunk in the 2nd half.

I thought the press and the way they executed it was good. We have guys that don't know when they can move their feet on an inbound. Our guys look at each other not knowing who is going to throw the ball in. Ridiculous.

How many times have you seen a guy forget he is not throwing in after a made basket and walking, it happens. For whatever reason you want to equate an ugly game by an extremely inexperienced, marginally talented team at best with poor coaching while giving credit to a coach whose team played even worse. Sorry, just not buying it. We sucked, we won, move on. It will take a couple of years to judge this coaching staff and 90% of that will be based on recruiting as with any staff.

First let me say I have a great deal of confidence in this coaching staff. However, they did not shine in this contest. I did not see ingame adjustments, nor new plan at the half. Niagara adjusted and made a game of it. Do you absolve the coaches and their decisions completely?

You may believe that we were outcoached, but I don't think so. SJU was putrid for 90% of the game, yet Casey couldn't find a way to win. You could see Mullin's patience wearing thin, as he knows the deficiencies the team has, and harps on them in practice over and over. Casey was wise to throw traps and presses at SJU. Then again, a grade school coach could see we have no real pg and limited other options to handle the ball. Getting a win out of your team when they play like garbage is a sign you did something right as a coach.

By that standard Norm and Lavin are HoF bound.

That being said I agree with CM's end of interview comment - these are freshmen and new comers to America and all a team that is still learning to gel without the player who was predicted to be the best player on the court. I think a lot of patience and a few extra beers/shots are in order for this year on the part of the fan base.

Fair enough. I guess I'm too sensitive to criticism about Mullin. The difference between Lavin and Mullin is the talent level they had available. If Lavin had this team, they would be lucky to have 1 win, and we would have had to hear a lot of post game B.S. from the king of B.S.

Also Fair Enough. Like I said I am being patient and budgeting more beer. Its all good (=

Malik Boothe in the house, also from Zach B;

#sjubb hosted Mount Vernon foursome Jamie Wiltshire, Gregory Calixte, Derrick Hamlin and Jason Douglas-Stanley.

#sjubb had coaches from Mount Vernon, Christ the King and Cardozo in the house today. Support from the area is clearly there.

Great to see Mount Vernon there. I can't remember them ever caring enough about us to come.

Ray, I thought that we could have handled the press much better. A time out and some instruction could have solved that. This was our 9th game and not the first time that we had trouble dealing with a press. Got to be able to deal with a press from a Niagara team that is not exactly a defensive juggernaut.

Mullin has discussed how they work extensively on drills to get open, and added they do well in practice, do well in scrimmages, and then revert back to bad habits in games. I doubt Coach could have fixed that in a timeout. Lucky that he left the team with some timeouts to use when trapped. I can recall them saving a turnover on 2 occasions by using the timeouts on those occasions.

With all due respect, time outs should be used to reinforce what was done in practice.

At about the 4:40 mark, Mullin addressing turnover problem starts to say "another ball handler IS IS gonna be.. something we need for sure"

I took it as a good sign he expects to have one soon.

the game was ugly to say the least, but besides shooting, I think the lack of crisp passing was the thing most noticeable. A double team means someone is open.....crisp passing to work it to the open man...sorry thats my CYO speech....lol

Speaking of crisp passing, we better have it on Sunday against the Cuse.

The scary part is that if we can't handle pressure from St. Francis and Niagara, what will the really athletic and long teams do to us? it could like like the Georgetown Game during Mullin's freshman season.

There was one play early in the half where I chuckled, in a good way, at one of the offensive sets. I believe it was Sima and Jones who left the post at the same time to the opposite sides of the foul line to set a pick and/or create space as Balamou dribbled between them and went for the layup (he missed) as both Sima and Jones crashed the boards to chase the miss. Although it was a missed opportunity, it’s refreshing to continue to see some semblance of offensive schemes being designed and executed.

With the addition of a point guard, hopefully in late December, we’ll have more time to get into to our sets and pass the rock to the open man early in the clock as opposed to wasting time breaking a press and then chucking one up with seconds to spare. I see it now, Lovett penetrating and kicking it out to a wide open Mussini and even Johnson, who have been both forcing 3’s.

There is a saying that even an unattractive woman has one feature about her that you can find attractive. Applying that concept to this game and in trying on SJU's behalf to come up with something positive to say and after an exhaustive search I finally may have hit on something. Mussini's stat line showed zero fouls committed by him.
