Next year

It would be nice to see us add a X and O coach,,,that would help Lavin a lot!

Who though? an AAU Coach? High School Coach?

New Rochelle and Mt. Vernon coaches would increase the New York market influence also long time great basketball programs.

Next years make or break imo..If we dont at least make the tourney next year then we have to seriously evaluate Lavin and what hes done or hasn't done..

We all know Lavins a better recruiter then x's and o's but hes not getting the same talent he got in UCLA..Theyre's no Baron Davis' so far or even Matt Barnes or Jason Kaponos so if Lavins gonna recruit ok but not great it wont make up for his defeciency with x's and o's

Also as somebody said in todays college ball you need shooters..with the zone and where the three point line is a lot of cbb especially in the tourney has turned into a 3 point competition and why inferior teams sometimes go on a run in the tournament..

You cant suceed without shooters unless you have amazing talent like that Wall and Cousins UK team which we clearly dont have..and there lack of shooting eventually hurt them in the tourney as physically talented as they were..

I was not looking to flame the board.I kept quiet for 3 seasons.I dont give lavin a pass for last season, his coaches were coaching, his recruits were playing. There is no pass for that. Its all about accountability. There is NOT one good shooter on this team. There is 0 chance this team makes the dance next season nevermind the sweet 16..There are no shooters.without shooters, the zone is packed in, and the big guys have no space, and can't score.I have no idea why we set those picks at the top of the key with our big guys, and they dont even roll to the rim. This lets the other teams big guy play the other side of the pick, which forces our guards to just run parralel to the half court line.

We have a bunch of excellent athletes, they can all run, jump, block shots..but that alone does not win..unfortunately for us you have to put the ball in the basket..and this team cannot do that..3 seasons a top coach should of had this program back on top..NC state is back...Norm left this program in better shape then when he got here(and I was a norm hater). The big east is horrible this season, compared to years past.I dont want to see Lavin fired, as he will bring the occassional stud in..But the days of Fran, and Louie are done....

Disagree about shooters. There are players on the team who could shoot, if anything was ever run for them to get a good look. But the way our offense is run if you cannot create for yourself you're screwed.

You're completely right about the pick-no-roll. It's mind-boggling.

Also agree it's a down year for the Artist Formerly Known as the Big East. Louisville, Syracuse, and Georgetown are good. Throw in Marquette if you want. Everybody else stinks.

Also, comparing conference competition this year to next year, is a little like comparing apples to oranges. I don't know if the competition is going to be better or worse next year (probably a slight step down from this year). It's also an incomplete product, with Dayton and St. Louis on the way in 2014.

Except for Seton Hall, we'll be sweeping nobody next year.

Having said all of that, if everyone returns then this is easily a Sweet 16 team next year.

Easily?? I'll take that bet... you are somehow hoping for a HUGE improvement from this year to next with barely any personnel change... adding a transfer from Harvard and a defensive PF is not going to lift this team to be exponentially better next year, perhaps a couple of games but that's it...

We haven't advanced past the first round of the tournament in close to 15 years and have made the tournament just twice since then. Also the "if" is huge.... I am really doubting that everyone will be back next year, but we'll see...

Hey next year is all about hope. Hoping everyone improves their game as they mature. Hoping Sampson comes back for year 2 and team up with Sanchez, hoping GG comes back as a beast, hoping Obekpa gets some offensive skills to go along with his shot blocking ability, hoping Bourgault looks great next year launcing 3`s, hoping Harrison relaxes himself and helps the team instead of being a distraction. hope hope hope.

To me it has to be next year, if not then the 2 best players next year will be gone, and ain 2 years won`t be as good. So we`d have to wait till atleast 2015-16 to be good. Everyone would be calling for Lavins head, but not me. I` said when he came that if can`t turn it around here then no one probably will.
7-8yrs is fair enough time, no?

all that is great but you cant make bourgault shoot faster, he is way to slow getting his shot off.We need shooters or all those bigs we have are useless...I think if this new conference is marketed properly, it can become a beast of a conference, and could draw studs..do you want to play in a football conference, or basketball? do you want to play on the big stage? or greensboro coliseum?? Do you want to see your name on broadway or a corn field..I believe Lavin can recruit..HE needs shooters...shooters, and more shooters...

That`s what I believe Lavin thought he was getting in Marco, and comparing him to kerr and paxson. Someone asks me if I thought he was comparing him to the coll. or nba paxson and kerr, well he never said the college version of them so when people hear him compared to them everyone assumes the nba version.
Guess Lavin was dead wrong on that one huh? Why not bring in Chris (a great shooter) to work with marco over the summer? Wouldn`t hurt to ask right?

St. John's has not had a REAL pure shooter since Mullin. Of course, we have guys that could fill it up (Sealy, Berry, Hardy, and many more), but we can never, ever get a guy that can just pure flat out shoot. Marco may be able to do so on the JC level, but not here. Guys are too quick and big for him. he does not have the confidence to shoot over them, so unless he is WIDE open, he passes. And, he misses too manyh of the ones he does take.

The bigger issue is that a lot of these guys can't shoot at all (even Foul shots). Branch and Harrison can. in spurts, and of course Sampson has his range, but I am of the opinion that Lavin's kids, while super athletic, are not basketball players in the sense that they know the fundamentals and have BB skills. They over-rely on their pure athleticism. While it's OK to have 1 or 2 of those kinds of freak athletes on your roster, you can't be competitive at the highest level if that's the preponderance of what you've got.

It will probably take a few years for Lavin to sort that out, but that won't cure the problem of not playing any real offense. I don't now if that's the coaching or the limitations set by the players we now have.

But, next year, the team WILL be better as they will be a year older, the conference will be different, and we get at least one key guy here to rebound (probably 2), a real weakness.

Basketball IQ makes up for a lot of coaching deficiencies! So does having people who can hit the 15ft jay! We have neither!

You need to be able to recruit consistently and annually. We still have to get through the problem of too many players in the same graduating class. Needs to be staggered better. That will take 3 to 4 years as we only have one eligibility for this (2013-14) year as I understand it.

Aside from that I haven't seen a shooting night like last night in awhile and hope not to for some time to come. It happens to the best!

I am expecting at least 2, possibly 3 players on this team to not be here next year... (No inside info, just my gut)

There are just too many questions marks...

Hmmmmm, I am expecting a few caches to bolt as well.

In addition to SH, how about DePaul, and sweeping 2 teams from PC, Xavier and Nova especially as we add Sanchez and Gift to shift the rebounding advantage.

We barely beat DePaul this year, and that was with Harrison's heave "3".
Providence? They get Ledo, we'll be lucky to win once.
Nova?. They have our number-no way.
Xavier-don't underestimate ho good they are year in and out.

Wasn't that what Mo Hicks was supposed to bring?

TIS, we'll see. I don't believe in the notion that a team has your number...that stuff changes as soon as you play well. We were missing Branch in the 2nd DePaul game, short handed vs. PC (Dlo, Branch not at full speed, missing suze tbat we'll have next year) and although I agree that Xavier tends to be good, they are only a decent A10 team this year.

I agree, we'll see. To post who we're not gonna sweep (or, who we will sweep) MONTHS away from playing any of those teams is nonsense. To absolutely post it, this far away, is even worse.

We don't know the makeup or who'll be playing for the respective teams. Things can change, and probably will look differently by that time.

Exactly, we dont even know if our leading scorer is returning

Be fun to address this in the fall.
