Next Head Coach

Good choice! I was really disappointed when he left Columbia but what he has done in San Francisco is quite remarkable. Wonder if he would want to come back East again.

He'd definitely be in my top few candidates should the need arise.
Again can he recruit here? Which will be the question with any of the realistic choices here.

Doubt it, really a West Coast guy, but $$ Always a wild card I suspect

What about Thad Matta?
If he got a clean bill of health, big if, and if they were able to back up the brinks truck...

Apparently no one but Matt can recruit here, so if a change comes, only three coaches should initially be fired. Let the new guy meet Matt and see if he likes him.

F96, What would the number be?

I was happy when St. John’s hired Mullin. I felt Lavin had lost his commitment to recruiting and had very little talent lined up after his NCAA team. I didn’t know if Mullin could coach but I thought he would hire a good staff and he would recruit talent and represent the school well. After last year I started to get concerned and I remember posting that this wasn’t going to end well. Heron coming aboard and Ponds returning gave new life to the team and I felt we would make the NCAA’s this season. If we don’t it will be a huge disappointment and I don’t see the point in having Muliin be a lame duck coach. I am not optimistic that we will find someone that will turn us into a regular winner but we might as well give it a try if we don’t turn it around quickly.

Well he turned down a 5 year $16 million deal from Georgia because as he told Goodie "he just wasn't ready yet."

And I think Georgia was prepared to guarantee the entire $16 million. SJU doesn't have that type of $$$.

Thread came a few hours later than I expected lol.

Nate Oates would obviously be the best choice, though he seems unlikely.

For now hoping we can still turn things around... but not very optimistic.
Not advocating for a coaching change one way or the other but just curious about Nate Oates. I know he has coached Buffalo the past 2 seasons after taking over for Bobby Hurley and is having a great season but he has like 5 seniors doing the heavy lifting so who knows if he can recruit or attract (with good recruiting assistants) good recruits. I'm sure he will look to bolt this year if he harbors higher aspirations than coaching at Buffalo because it is highly doubtful he will have the level of success next year that he has had this year. Obviously not a sure thing in my opinion. Think best option at this point would be to convince CM he needs to revamp his staff. We do have some fairly nice players in the pipeline. Hopefully this is our new AD's opinion and he can accomplish this task.
And that is the most that will happen - unless he decides that he doesn’t want o make changes. Won’t be fired in 5th year unless he won’t adapt.

Nate Oates of Buffalo, but I think he's going to be in line for bigger jobs. In reality, anybody who takes this job is going to come with question marks. No perfect candidate out there, IMO.

Ideally, Mullin turns it around the rest of this year, and is back.
Mullin being back is not ideal IMO. Even if the team (not Mullin) turns it around, next year figures to be even worse. The OOC will be more difficult, other BE teams have out recruited us and our best players are probably gone from this team. Mullin has not shown me that he has grown one iota as a coach. I was against hiring an inexperienced coach from day one. Even if it was our best player ever and a HOF NBA player. Once the hire was made I assumed he was hired because it was believed he would be a great recruiter because of his accomplishments. How has that worked out? I also assumed that he would hire an assistant who had experience coaching. I don't know if Slice was supposed to be that guy but I think he was hired because he was a great HS recruiter. It would have been unrealistic to expect him to both be the main recruiter and also run the team. Matt was brought onboard to recruit transfers and most agree he has done a great job in that area. St Jean is running the team from what I can see and runs the practices from what I have read. He may eventually prove to be a good coach but he is not there yet.I have no idea why Mitch was hired other than that he is Mullin's friend.

Yes, we will again be starting over if we hire a new coach, but it is time. I do not want to see another year of running the team into the ground. I hope and believe Mike Craig has the ability to hire a quality head coach and ensure that he hires a balanced staff.I also hope that a new coach will be given the resources he needs to succeed.

Just my opinions. I've been holding them in too long and needed to vent.
It is very hard to ask the fan base to continue to have patience, when we've gone 19 years without an NCAA tournament win. Especially, when most of our fan base is made up of the over-60 crowd.

Even if what you are proposing is the right thing, I don't see the majority of this fan base going for it.

If a new coach comes in, he has to be able to win right away, like in year 1. That's why, the more I think about it, if a change is made, an older guy like Cluess or Mihalic might not be the worst thing in the world.
Don’t think change will be made this year. And, if it is will not be either of them.

It can never hurt to ask.

I hope Cragg realizes this isn’t Duke.

What about SJU would make him think it is Duke?

Absent a major turn around, seems like Achiuwa going elsewhere will be, like Lavin whiffing on Briscoe, Mullin's Waterloo.

Again Mullin has some obvious faults. But I love people saying Mullin can't recruit but Matt is great?????

Realize it's a pipe dream, but my first choice would be a Hoiberg and Matt reunion in Queens.
