Next Head Coach...3 picks

Beast , I’m glad you were able to second the view of Greg St Jean as a possible future Coach here at St John’s .  I got the feeling there were a lot of fans , alums , etc who really thought Greg would be a good hire , after Mullin . Especially with the humiliation transpiring after more than a few Coaches turned the job down . But , Cragg went in another direction and it is what it is .                  It’s nice to know that Greg still retains a fondness for the School  , even if he wasn’t treated well when the job opened up … I agree he will make a great Coach somewhere , someday soon .           Even maybe here .  It would be a good story .

We need a coach with a name that is recognized by recruits, with a hex of being a very good recruiter
Think you nailed it usguard we need to put a hex on recruits to get them to sign with us. Brilliant! /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

If I had a time machine, I'd go back 20 years and hire John Calipari.

Or go back a little further and go to school at Kentucky.

When Calipari was interested in the SJU job, he was at Memphis.  Considering the dysfunctional operation that we've had to witness in the last twenty years, I wish the school had hired him.

I wonder if he really once intimated that Looie had cancer when recruiting against us.

That was the story going around at the time. I think it involved Bobby Martin, or another player SJU and Pitt were both recruiting, and where Calipari was an assistant. Calipari has done some questionable recruiting, but he has been able to take three different schools to the final four.
I think that was our last shot getting a coach with a very successful resume. Anderson was a successful  coach, and the situation may improve here, but if it doesn't, where do we go for another coach? When the attendance is down to 6,600 for the Seton Hall game, we have a problem.

Ancient history. Our teams aren't half as bad as our fans. At least our kids and coaches show up, practice, go to class, and appear to be trying. Our fans spend hours daily on here. Then complain about low attendance.

I actually think this site is great for the many posters who live far away or are informed and this site keeps them connected.

If you think even one fan doesn't matter I remember there was this kid, now probably late 30s who went to games with his dad. A ref would blow a call and He would start bellowing insults at the top of his lungs that could be heard thru the arena. Even at MSG. Fans got a big kick out of it, and I think the team responded to it.

StubHub tix are cheaper than 2 beers at a bar. I don't get it.

All things being equal if you were a player would you go to a school that sells out home games, or those who draw 3000 of their own fans to a garden game?

The problem with our attendance isn't with the posters on Redmen.com. Many don't reside in the NY area anymore. The problem is why so few of the current students show up. Georgetown and DePaul have the same problem.

No, it's with our nyc area posters. For out of town guys, its a way to keep in touch with the program. 1000 students came to the kansas game and the AD is keeping then engaged and planning some fun promotions.

Our redmen fans are often like what Winston Churchill said about his mostly absent American mother growing up. "She is the woman I loved from afar"

I'll call your assertion and ask how many posters were at msg Saturday and how many plan to attend the must win providence game next week?

I had heard the Calipari story as an assistant to Paul Evans at Pitt where he intimated to a recruit that "Looie had cancer" whether true or not.  Never heard it in the context of Bobby Martin.

Because the real controversy over Martin was that he was originally a verbal commit to Villanova.  And back then especially among the BE coaches it was an unwritten rule that you don't recruit kids who have committed to another BE school even if a verbal is non-binding.  And so when Calipari flipped Martin from Nova to Pitt it caused a lot of bad blood between Rollie and Paul Evans.  Calipari talked about it in his ESPN doc a few years ago when he simply said Martin contacted them and made it clear he did not want to go to Villanova and since he had not signed there was no obligation for him to stay committed.

Fordham, you are right re the feud between Villanova and Pitt over Martin, but I thought it was Dr. Roy Chipman, who Calipari was working for.

LOL. Yeah, the fans on Redmen.com are the problem. Most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read.

Build a good team/product and then fans come. It’s not the other way around. The programs that draw fans are winning teams that put a good product on the floor year after year. A good team/product doesn’t need to worry about cheap seats cutting into beer money. Good teams sell themselves.

I would say that most students who don't come to games aren't sitting in their dorms watching on tv. While I love that redmen.com connects out of state followers to the team via this site, most local.posters here are tv fans for various reasons.

Of course they owe the team and school nothing, but the reverse is true also
