Next Coach?

I wonder how long this national search is going to take?
The spring signing period is just around the corner
I would like to think that they did their due diligence before deciding to let Lavin walk
But, alas, this is St John's
We don't do things the normal way around here

I don't want to be anybody's stepping stone. Not that his success is guaranteed, but if he did come (doubtful) and had great success (not guaranteed), he'd be gone in a flash to a big conference with bigger bucks.

That's a gamble you take when you've already shown the world you don't want to pay the going rate for the coach at a "big time" basketball program.

The problem with Lavin wasn't his salary, it was that he was overpaid for his accomplishments. I honestly don't even believe he is a great or even very good communicator.

Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.
Think we should go with Bobby instead of Jan Brady.

Interesting. Would be thrilled with either. But actually prefer Danny because he was the Jan Brady of players in the family; think he's that much more invested in being the Marsha of college coaches in the fam.

Al McGuire is to Dick as Danny Hurley is to Bobby.

Well, SJU always makes things interesting. I'll wait until we know the new coach before judging the decision. Best of luck to Lavin.

I can't believe how quickly I've warmed to the idea, but I'd welcome Mullin with open arms if he brought the right staff with him--Slice, an x's and o's guru, and a local guy to recruit.

Slice would likely only come if Cal left for the NBA (looking very likely), but could bring IB and maybe another UK guy with him :)

You have to think that Maverick Rowan would be quick to commit to Mullin. Not just the St. John's connection, but to learn behind another shooter with the same size and position like Mullin...that is an opportunity right there!

Once you hire a NCAA basketball coach you have to forget about what you're paying him, unless you're a mom and pop program . Only question is, did you achieve the results you wanted. The hoops team is just a big income earner and PR machine anyway. Or does that mean when they pay Danny Hurley less we all should lower our goals?

You would need a lot of fence building to get Rowan here.

So busy today this is my first time logging in

I can believe it. You're like the weather in SFO. ;)

Danny Hurley.

The game threads will be interesting after each tech he gets :)

do you really seeing this program sticking with this hot head for half-a-decade or more?

It was mostly a joke. I'd also be thrilled with either. I do think Bobby has the higher ceiling. Danny's temper scares me. Bobby is fiery but under control. Danny seems combustible to me.

If you were a recruit and you had back to back visits from Danny and Bobby (assuming equal caliber schools), what pitch would convince you as a player or father/coach? Danny, built largely as a coach, or Bobby, a winner through and through who has done it himself and can show the recruit how he did it personally? I know who I'd choose.

I'd be happy with Mullin, ok with Danny. I don't really see any other viable options right now. I'm also hearing that Chris would take it if offered.

I'm not big on any candidate. I thought Mullin but may not be a good idea with no experience. Bobby Hurley probably best realistic option.

I've been reading all the posts and listening to the pundits talk on the radio bandying about some great candidates-Mullin, Pitino, D. Hurley, B. Hurley, Masiello, Miller.....So I am pretty sure the next SJU coach will be Mark Jackson. Coaching experience, St. John's connection, cheaper than Pitino and someone not favored by the majority of the Redmen.com family.

I agree Mullin would need a recruiter but nice to have an NBA and College HOF er walking in to close. As far as x and as I think Chris would be fine. I don't think pressure will bother him and he has forgotten more about BB than many coaches know. My biggest concern is can he teach, will he have Larry bird syndrome or will he be able to get through to the kids. I would take the chance.

You're right: Slice would only consider -- emphasis "consider" -- coming here if Cal went to the NBA. He's very well set -- and from what I hear, very happy -- at Kentucky. But I suppose we can all dream.
