Next Coach?

This is exciting!

There are a number of excellent candidates out there, all of whom are smarter basketball minds than Steve Lavin.

Nothing is ever smooth with SJU, but we're on the right track.
I'm much more enthusiastic about the program's outlook than I was a week ago before we played our NCAA game.

Can't you be excited and enthusiastic without making yet another dig at Lavin? You do realize he's gone, right? Let it go, man. Let it go.

Part of the reason to be excited is because we'll be getting a better coach.
What would be exciting about getting a new coach if I felt that Lavin was good at his job?

You have every right to be excited, since you have been calling for Lavin to be gone for a while now. That is not my point. I think taking a shot at the outgoing coach is a cheap shot and undermines your credibility. But that is MHO and YMMV. As obviously it does.

Fair.
Just to be clear though, I'm not excited that Lavin is fired, and I didn't mean to take a cheap shot.
I'm happy that there are several very good candidates being discussed. And I'm hopeful they can push the program forward.

Then we agree on that. I've always thought you a thoughtful poster, and passionate, yes, but thoughtful.

Just curious of the names most bandied around, what kind of ball-park income do they currently pull in?

D Hurley?
B Hurley?
Mas?
Mullin?

500k? More?

All I know is that Bobby G. doesn't become a bean counter and cheap out.

This is no place for the university to skimp just because enrollment is down.

As unfounded as it should be, I would be elated if Chris Mullin became our new coach, with Coach C. around to see his "step-son" take the reigns. Even if he failed here, it would be worth the risk.

That being said, to me the most solid, sure to be here, never lost anywhere he coached guy, is Tim Cluess.

With both, either guy would know what it's like to be a St., John's man.

Danny Hurley.

The game threads will be interesting after each tech he gets :)

do you really seeing this program sticking with this hot head for half-a-decade or more?

If he wins, sure. I'm interested in two things: clean shop and winning. The method by which those two objectives are accomplished is really not something I'm worried about. Tom Izzo is a madman and I doubt MSU administrators/fans care much; Tony Bennett is much more laid back and I doubt UVA administrators/fans care much. There are plenty of different styles. I care about the end results.

Fox Sports TV has to be advising that the school can't cheapo out on this hire. Fox doesn't want a bust of a program in NYC. I expect them to spend pretty big money.

During the season Desco came over to our MSG seats one game and had a Mullin jersey literally over his dress shirt. That will be his staple go to outfit if we got Mullin

As of last week, Danny was at 700K plus incentives, Bobby was at 300K but it was rewritten. Mass is likely at 400-600.

With Mullin it wouldn't be about money

We can't go cheapo, it could destroy our chance to to build the kind of program I know all here are looking for and expecting and we as fans certainly deserve.

@ESPNAndyKatz: Lavin thought he was getting an extension. Didn't happen. He will get his buyout. Next Red Storm can go brand name w/a Mullin or a Hurley.

D Hurley? $600K+
B Hurley? $550K+
Mas? Not sure but the USF contract was for $1 mill per
Mullin? Not sure but his net worth is estimated at $18 mill

500k? More?

As I speculated this morning, knowing some of the people on committee, it was about value for the investment. I don't think anyone was ready to cut ties with LAvin if the price and deal was right. McGoogles report makes sense that they wanted to reduce his salary and buyout, which is what I said this morning. He just didn't show that he was a $2.5 million coach because he isn't, and his high priced staff didn't yield results. I think LAvin misreads what his value is. He will have a hard time getting $2million per from anyone and if they give it to him they are nuts. Likely next stop is the broadcast booth.

Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.
Think we should go with Bobby instead of Jan Brady.

Interesting. Would be thrilled with either. But actually prefer Danny because he was the Jan Brady of players in the family; think he's that much more invested in being the Marsha of college coaches in the fam.
