Next Coach?

On the Villinova rivals board they have a thread about this. Most responds favor parting w Lavin. They feel a good SJBB would be good for the BE. They sound like most of us saying we should go after Hurley?

They should worry about their own coach failing to get to a sweet 16 year after year with a really good team. Cuts like a knife.

Seriously! Like being a #1 seed and not even making the sweet 16 is good for the conference? Or the fact that they crap out early every year is good for the conference?

This seems vaguely familiar in reverse.

Remember when all the BE coaches and fans of other programs constantly praised Norm for doing a great job and all said that he deserved to stay as HC?

Sorry, but I just don't see Nova fans truly wanting what's best for our program. Take what they say with a grain of salt.

Some here need to face facts: Lavin is what's best for our program right now UNLESS SJU has a true stud HC already lined up. As was mentioned earlier, the last time we fired a coach the names in consideration were pathetically lame.

-He admitted that he stopped recruiting Isaiah Whitehead for the fear of perception of losing a NY kid

-He did not secure Chris McCullogh who was down to us and Cuse because he either felt that he had McCullough in the bag and/or Jakarr would be returning

-AAU teammates Abdul Malik Abu and Jared Terrell did not even mention SJU expressing interest after Both players included SJU on their cut list in the summer of 2013

-He was not recruiting locally as per the NY Post article in January 2014 even though he had to fill scholarships for Sanchez, Bourgault, Gift and any possible early entry candidates (Jakarr).

It's more scary that you are fine with headlines instead of results.
I'd love to see you prove that he worked his hardest to secure the '14 recruiting class.

No one but him brought up his contract extension when the team started off 0-5 in conference play last year.

You can't pay attention to anything he says. It's all blather. He said Jordan and Obekpa weren't coming back. Then he realized that wouldn't help his case for an extension, so he reversed field. Then he became altogether unintelligible.

On Friday after the game Sheed wouldn't comment about coming back, Saturday Sheed said he would come back if Lavin was back! Obekpa was unknown until he spoke to Harrison, What in the world does it have to do with Lavin?

He stopped recruiting Whitehead because of ethics, he wasn't going to be bribed by Tiny.

He lost out on mccullough because we'll see Syracuse sanctions and YMCA money. Funny story. NCAA went to a Syracuse practice last year and an investigator noticed do many new cars with the same dealership tags. The next day he went to the dealership and the cars were all back on the lot! That is how they roll when u recruit against the big dogs. You gonna support our program like that?

I can't speak to the education you received at Saint John's. However, Larry Brown recruited Danny Manning by hiring Danny Manning's father as an assistant coach. He was rewarded with a national championship. Mike Screwshrenski recruited Chris Duhon and Carlos Boozer by getting jobs for Duhon's mother and Boozer's father. He was rewarded with a national championship. There's a long list of "blackmail." You want ethics? That's one vote for rehiring Norm. He was ethical as hell.

Left out Tark having his assistant adopt Lloyd Daniels and Calipari hiring Milt Wagner for a position in admin even though he didn't have a college degree to get Dajuan Wagner. I guess since neither one won a title it didn't fit into your argument, but those are two of my favorite examples of the "ethics" of college basketball in addition to those you mentioned.

I don't see how this is proof of anything related to sabotaging his recruiting class intentionally.

Just like I can't prove that he worked his hardest, you can't prove that he didn't.

Please explain how sabotaging your own recruiting class is a method of getting an extension. Wouldn't you get an extension by getting the best possible recruits and winning with them?

Do you really think Coach Lavin purposely lost with the theory of that being his best route to an extension?

I think there are valid points on his coaching abilities and his overall recruiting. I would gladly welcome a proven winning coach to replace Lavin. BUT, I think it's paranoia or pure hatred of the man to really believe that he sabotaged his own recruiting class.

You obviously have the point of view that you either have a clean program or a winning program. I have a different point of view. I believe you can have a clean program and a winning program. It is not either/or.

I feel like I'm repeating myself.

If a coach refuses to go recruiting while having scholarships to fill, what does that mean? Explain to me why he would not be out recruiting and I'll drop it.

And hatred is pretty harsh. Seems like a cool guy but that has no bearing on him doing his job well.

How long did Walter Berry's mom work at St. John's? We did not win a national championship and if she is collecting a pension it should be rescinded.
How ethical is it for a St. John's professor to have his dorkey son grade student's papers?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we didn't have an assistant position open anyway. So he would have had to fire someone from his staff just to get Whitehead hear? Very shady indeed
