Next Coach?

I still am not clear what Mark Jackson did to become persona non grata. please explain.

HOLD THE PRESSES.. STOP THE VOTING.. IT'S ALL OVER IN QUEENS..

Steve Lavin, COACH at St John's , for the last 5 years has resigned.. Lavin announced at a 8am PRESS conference in CHICAGO that he is accepting the Head Coaching position at DePaul University, replacing Oliver Purnell.

Lavin said he believes DePaul is a sleeping GIANT OF A Program in the Big East and Nationally and has a great tradition that can be re-kindled with their new tax payer funded ARENA.

Lavin leaves fellow Big East foe, St JOHN'S after losing to San Diego State on FRIDAY.

St John's AD, Gene Monasch, when reached by phone, briefly said, " We wish Steve well at DePaul but, not too well." DePaul sources said they received permission from St JOHN'S to contact Lavin about their Coaching vacancy and, agreement was quickly reached..

Financial Terms were not revealed but,it is believed DePaul will send Cash to St JOHN'S as consideration for Lavin leaving Queens.

Lavin , in reviewing the returning players at DePaul, was quoted as saying, " I believe Billy Garrett, is the best point guard I have ever Coached and am looking forward to him becoming the best player in the Big East."

Lavin, Gene Keady and Rico Hines will follow Lavin to Chicago. All have found lodging in high rise condos along Lake Shore Drive, over looking famed Navy Pier.

"I love CHICAGO PIZZA, SAID LAVIN." And, who can not love the Cubs?" I will get SEASON tickets later today."

St JOHN'S is already seeking a new COACH and further announcements from AD Monasch are expected later today.

Long time fans of Lavin, known as Lavinites were stunned and had no comment at this time.

Not sure what OSU you are referring too but Thad Matta is not going anywhere that I have heard of. That being said, Miller could make way more money in Jamaica but the atmosphere and support are not what it is in Dayton. Great arena, great fan base...would be a tough call...well for him - i would follow the money if I could make 20 years worth of UD pay in 4 years at SJU.

The atmosphere and support would be the same if not better if we had a consistent, winning program.

He's a Cali guy who prefers the laid back approach in everything.

I don't think he willingly dogged it on the recruiting trail to get an extension, but this part I 100 percent agree with. He was born too early -- San Francisco is littered with hyper-aggressive, power-hungry D-bags now. He needs a little less hippie and more of whatever amount of aggressiveness is tolerable before becoming douchey.

Plus, I can recognize a fellow procrastinator, and he's a world-class one. The problem is I can wait until midnight to edit chapters from a book or bug-test a website and still get it done. Doesn't work so hot with recruiting.

My best friend just moved out to San Fran from Brooklyn in September. He took a tour of Oregon and Washington first and he's really struggling with the relaxed culture there quite a bit. He's very aggressive and has pretty bad road rage, but is a yoga instructor and raw foodist...go figure.

Road rage will not be good for him out here -- we have terrible drivers in the Bay Area.

I never once feared for my life crossing the street in NYC. Here, I pause for literally 5 to 10 seconds to make sure I don't get run down when walking to school with my daughters.

We also have aggressive homeless people here, so expect a message from him soon about how he knocked out a bum.

You are correct Paul, I think Huggie should wear a shirt and tie too.
But, I will grant him some slack because Morgantown has just a slightly more relaxed sense of fashion than NYC.

But also, Huggins has been doing it for a long time. Lavin wore a suit at UCLA, wore a suit for ESPN, but then he comes to SJU and thinks everyday is casual Friday. That's what pisses me off most of all.

The no tie look is actually a fishion trend. You may not like it but that is a fact. Many coaches have started doing it and you now see it in places where it would have never been dreamed of in the past. Lavin is actually a trend setter in that sense.

I prefer the shirt and tie also. He represents a university and it would not kill him to wear it during games, we are talking about a 2 1/2 hr. timespan.

Yes, but if there's one thing I've learned about STJ from my 30 years of fandom is that it certainly is not a fashion forward, modern, futurist, trendy institution.

Who else? Mike Brey, Huggins... ?

And I still say that it's more about Lavin's respect for the job. Do you think he would've ever tried to stop wearing a suit at ESPN? No, they would've told him to shut up and do his job.
But I take this act as an insult towards St Johns.

I know I'm probably crazy about this though, so I admit it's a pet peeve, not something that should actually be held against coach.

I see my share of guys wearing the button down shirt at work, sans the tie. And I am not speaking about just on Casual Fridays.

Louie retired right around the time i started to follow but maybe the older posters can tell us if he received any backlash for his sweaters?......

I am not a fan of Lavin's "dress down Friday" look (good one Desco), but i would probably care a lot less if he was winning and recruiting as i expect he should. He would receive a much bigger pass for these smaller things if we werent looking at the worst season at SJU since 2003-04 next year
