Next Coach?

Buffalo's rpi is 40 right behind STJ at 39.
and.....are you suggesting that UB is just as good as us and that Bobby Hurley is a better coach then Lav? I think its all ridiculous and again, lets wait until the season is over before anyone fires the guy. One question though, if anyone asked you if you'd be happy with the Johnnies at 19-9 with 3 games remaining before the BE tourney at the start of the season, I bet MOST of us would say sure. Anything can happen in the Dance and we will be there! These kids are right there, lets support the team and LAV now, you have all off season to tear down any walls.
Go Johnnies!!!!!

No way Lavin gets fired this season, unless there is an attractive buyout that will allow remainder to fund the new coach AND the team falls apart over the next 3 games and BET

I don't want to have a long discussion about this, but I think all options are still on the table BEAST. I truly believe President Gempeshaw will evaluate everything after this season.
And it'll be his decision to make.
So unless anyone has asked him personally, and I doubt he's tipped his hand, then we really don't know.

1) Did you go to St. Johns?
2) Did you ever know them to piss away $2 million and get nothing in return (unless FH was giving bonus money to Rob Wile, or Cecilia Chang was handing in huge credit card bills?

Like I said , without an attractive buyout for the school, they don't eat money. They are overall cheaper than the Wilpons, so don't expect they fire a $2 million coach after a 20 win season without saving a substantial amount on their bottom line - certainly not when enrollment is down, and more than even that, EVER.

Those who want Lavin fired and find this discussion with some for and some against, drop it now. If we lose to Gtown and Nova, all the haters will log on and overwhelm the board - bet on it.

Beast,

How do you think the team will be next year?

For the most part I view Lavin as a talking Bobble head, however if we make the tourney he deserves an extension and all of this talk is silly.

Plus, he needs top recruits. Can't get just get into the ncaa but Lovett, Diallo, and others don't come, and extend him. Would there be any hope for the future? I don't think so.
The Ncaa touny would be step 1, recruits would be step 2. If he gets both done, then and only then he should get an extension.

Two NCAA's and 2 NIT's in 5 years coming off the end of Jarvis era and the atrocious Norm error is enough to get an extension.

Somewhat agree but we have not secured an NCAA bid yet and some of you guys are giving this team the evil eye.
Also, this is 2015 and the going rate for successful name brand coaches runs $1-3 million and not what Jarvis was earning 16 years ago.
Those with short memories do not remember the last 4 years of the Jarvis era with arrests, NCAA violations and alienation of fans. As much as I respect the Maven as a fan he never raised any issues with Jarvis or ever called for his firing while the ship was sinking. Norm Roberts never ever should have been hired and it set the program back 6 years. Lavin hit the ground running but the Rise Academy fiasco tarnished that class. The result was the disastrous 2nd year when freshmen got their butts handed to them. Two straight NIT'S were a disappointment and last year's recruiting effort has put Lavin and his coaches on the hot seat. This year has continued a St. John's tradition of players not qualifying and what could have been a sweet 16 team has had to struggle in the rebounding department. In all of the scenarios the school's compliance department is as much at fault as the coaches. That staff is not hired by Lavin and they are there to guide the coaches on players eligibility issues. There is plenty of fault to go around but I still think the season will play out before a decision is made on Lavin and much of it depends on the recruiting class and Lavin and his agent being realistic. If they play hardball they will lose.
Now, let's see what happens in the next 4 weeks and leave your personal agendas aside. Either way those against Lavin will never come around and in that case would need a new team to root for if he is extended. Iona, Villanova and Kentucky are good choices for them.

lol at the nit, great accomplishment. Yea, well Villanova isn't Duke and Kansas yet they are always in the ncaa. The nit will never be good enough. You sound like obama, blaming the previous man even though it was yearsss ago.
You settle for the nit, I won't.
Like I said NCAA and top recruits, then he's deserves an extention. EARN IT.

omgomg but he's our last hope. You people need to stop that silly talk.

4. Even with all the inelegibilities and Jordan nonsense we have been scandal free.

Of course there are other factors but based on the above he should get an extension IMO.

BTW, NO NCAA this year and no extension!

Beast,

How do you think the team will be next year?

Avon,
I will seriously let the dust settle and see who is coming in, see who is eligible, so who isn't leaving, etc. Honestly I've never once worried about next season until we get the balls out for practice. I can appreciate you looking ahead, but all the speculation of Obekpa/Jordan being gone, blah, blah , blah - I just don't care at this point. You never ever fire a guy based on what next year will look like IMO. Who knows, Keady might have a year of eligibility left and play center.

I think this is where a lot of posters get lost - this isnt pro sports where its a GM who makes the personnel decisions and the coach who coaches the team and each is responsible for their part.

And when the GM fails like, say Mike Tannenbaum did, you can fire him but keep Rex Ryan to coach.

In college, the coach is responsible for the whole show.

1. Coaching it is very, very debatable that he has underachieved with the talent on the team. NCAAs likely this year- GREAT! how about last year when there was arguably more talent in a worse league? or two years ago when you lost the last 6 BE games to lose an NCAA birth? Even this year, its very arguable that this team should be better off than they currently are.

2. Constructing the team- whats next years roster looking like? What recruits are coming in to replace the enormous losses of Harrison and Pointer as star players and Branch as an important role player?

These are things that should be evaluated, not just a 5/6 win streak where we have beaten Creighton Depaul and the Hall amongst our opponents....

This is where we disagree Beast. I think the only hold ups have been Lavin's camp aggressive posturing and the questionable recruiting class after this year's eligibility issues. That is a major reason the staff has gone international in trying to bring in seasoned players who have played against much older players in Europe. It is going to be an interesting 4 weeks.

I understand that. And no, not in a million years would I expect the school to eat the buyout. I assume it would come from the donors.

And fyi, no, I went to Queens College undergrad.
My dad was an athlete at SJU, and my grandpa worked at St Johns for many years. That's my connection. But i follow the University closely and know exactly what you mean in terms of finances.

More than any disagreements we may have over the evaluation of the coach..
I agree with you completely in that I have no interest in discussing this until weeks from now.
Win, lose or otherwise. We have meaningful games to play the next few weeks. I'm looking forward to them, and would much rather discuss Georgetown.

the first NIT we were 8-5 in the league and we finished 0-5 in the league and lost to Nova in the BET to have a 6 game losing streak prior to getting into the NIT. At 8-5 we were on the bubble and the team completely collapsed. Winning a game against St Joes was nice but to go from 8-5 to lucky to be in the NIT is not a great accomplishment.

Last years team had every major contributor on this team, plus Orlando Sanchez and Jakaar and we not only did we miss the NCAAs with a team loaded with talent (the most talented SJU team since 1999-2000 easily), we get waxed in the NIT against Robert Morris.

And for this team to be on the bubble all year with the talent on the roster?...also underachieving.

To be fair Dlo was suspended for the last 4 games of the 12/13 season and the NIT. That changed the end of the season dramatically.

13/14 was a disaster in every sense of the word on the court and on the trail.

To me the big question is what do you do if we don't make the tourney but Diallo commits?
To me not enough to warrant any kind of extension, but would complicate things

REALLY!!! At this point in the Season that is your Big Question...

WOW.

Well actually this would be my list
1. How to score a threesome with Kate Upton and Scarlett Johanson
2. When will my 5 year old son stop sneaking into our bed in the middle of the night
3. What happens after you die
4. How can I convince my wife to let me quit and stay home to be MR Mom
5. What is for dinner tonight
6. Really what does happen to your socks in the dryer
9,999.-Will SJU make the tourney and if not should Lavin be bought out.

Since it is a SJU basketball board I thought I would lead with that question though

I have respect for both you and pops as big time fans of the program. However, embellishing history is not going to gain you any support. I agree 100 % last year was a disappointment. Rysheed struggling, Jakarr rehearsing for the NBA, and our uninspired players not showing up for Robert Morris especially D'Angelo Harrison. However, two years ago it was the old Big East and our players were underachieving sophs and we lost 5 straight to nationally ranked teams, 4 of which were on the road. Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, Notre Dame and Marquette were the ranked teams in that group. We beat nationally ranked Cincinnati and Notre Dame earlier in the season in what was one of the most difficult schedules in St. John's history.
You, me and most of the fans here know we would likely not be having this discussion had Keith Thomas qualified but none of that would heal the rift with pops and Lavs. ;)

Keeping Obekpa is much more important than getting an offensively challenged player whose camp thinks he is a one and done. Adonis will be qualified and getting a Euro big would be huge.

I started at Queens College, so we're related. :) I didn't mean to disparage, and I don't think you took it this way, but SJU does not waste a penny. I was once told that the reason the campus had an array of different colored brick buildings when St John's Hall was stone, was that the school instructed the contractor to buy the cheapest color of bricks for St. Al's, Marillac, the library, and the Law school.

What I implied was once you go here, you know they will not waste a penny, no less two million dollars. As far as donors eating the salary and ponying up for more, think of it this way: I don't think a single one of our donors was born with a silver spoon in his mouth - they went to SJU for a good reason - it was the cheapest private university around - and then built a career and wealth. No one in my opinion is going to write Lavin a $2 million check for winning 20 games, and say adios. They will give him a final season to have success and then make a decision. If they have to extend him with non-guaranteed money so he can recruit, they will.

What sport did you dad play? Really cool, unless of course your dad is Curtis Redding.
