Next Coach?

Have not been a Lavin fan for a long time, but am enjoying this year immensely. I think we have exhausted the list of his foibles, made a million or so comparisons to other coaches & developed every conspiracy theory available to man. Can we just enjoy the season rather than have a "redundancy fest"? If he flops going down the stretch, so be it. If team dances & perhaps wins a game, appreciate it. Then just let the powers to be determine his fate. It may be cathartic for some to rail about SL incessantly, but such expressions don't move the needle one way or the other.

I think even I posted about 50 posts in this thread ago that this thread is silly and that if we make the tourney he should be extended. Honestly though this thread has really turned into a Mike Jarvis debate anyway.
I simply don't understand the argument that making the tournament this season warrants an extension for Lavin. The recruiting class should be finalized, and player eligibility determined before he is locked up.

As immensely frustrating as i find it to watch Lavin "coach," I can't disagree with this. For the time being, the satisfaction (hopefully) of seeing D'Angelo, Phil and Dom get a moment in the sun trumps all of the other issues.

I disagree with the posters who seem to think that because the seniors have carried the team to the cusp of an NCAA bid (largely despite the coaching), that this cures all of the other ills and that suddenly all is right in the world of SJU basketball.

I also disagree with the posters who think that a coach who makes the NCAAs once every four years is doing a satisfactory job.

However, there will be time to discuss all of that after the last game of the season.

Again, results wise he would have done the absolute minumum, but enough just the same.

Recruiting wise, he def gives us the best shot at superior talent compared to anyone that would possibly replace him.

Credibility wise he is still nationally known. Any replacement for him would not be.

ESPN reported today that 6 of their top 10 have not committed, so I guess Lavin's inability to close the deal with some of our prospects is not too unusual.

He will get renewed if we make the Tourney this year, whether people like it or not (and I'm hardly a fan). In fact, I have my suspicions that it's already a done deal. The main problem in my mind is that 6 years on, he hasn't built a sustainable program.

To wit: check out this Q&A today between the Georgetown and St John's blogs:

Casual Hoya: Give me an outlook as to how the Johnnies are going to look next season.

Rumble in the Garden: Like Marquette this year but with much less talent. Actually like Virginia Tech this year. But less good.

(Casual Note: Oof.)

How can anyone predict next season's talent when the staff isn't done recruiting for said year?

fair point, but it's not a wild assumption that next year will feature many growing pains with such an overhaul to a roster and with the potential for so many freshies to be starters.

And when no one knows if Jordan and CO will be returning. "Less good" than Va. Tech (which will probably finish 3-15 in conference at best)? I don't think so.

back to back 20 win seasons for the first time in 15 years.

Yup. Can't take that away from him.
Anyone who's balanced has to acknowledge the good things that have happened under Lavin.

Not advisable to get too high (after wins) or too low (after losses). Love these seniors and will even say Lavin has had a decent year. That said, let's not forget the cumulative body of work and next year's roster.

Cumulative body of work has been steady improvement, even if its not at the rate some if not most of us would have liked. Next year's roster MAY be an issue once all is said and done. But why should that be forced upon someone else? ;)

Not getting too high, nor trying to antagonize. He has done a very good job this year and believe he deserves an extension, simple as that.

Disagree, feel free to get as pumped up as you want after this win. Great win against a rival, another step towards the big dance, and a phenomenal senior day.

All good things.

It was a great senior day. Very much enjoyed it.

lolololol

Big of you to give him 'decent year'. And yeah, there was nothing about this game any different than any other.. shouldn't get too high.

But do hold on to the roster argument. Unlike the others, at least it doesn't make you look totally silly.

I've been a sju fan for nearly 30 years. I remember the utter irrelevance of the program under Jarvis and Norm.

Like many, I was extremely optimistic with the hiring of lavin. Also like many, I've been frustrated with the lack of results the past few years and expected more.

The fact of the matter is, however, this year s team has overachieved. They're playing great basketball and lavin deserves credit for that.

Despite the frustrations if the pas two years the program has undoubtedly and indisputably become relevant again under lavin.

Am I concerned about our recent recruiting? Yes. But recruiting is lavin's strong suit and I don't think he's all of a sudden lost this skill.

With the big splash lavin made in his first year, we all expected immediate success. But maybe just maybe our expectations were unfair.

We have been a perennial NCAA tournament contender every year of lavins tenure with the exception of the year that lavin was battling cancer.
If you compare lavins five years to the previous seven, the progress is remarkable.

My conclusion is the man deserves an extension. Can't imagine who else we could bring in at this point that could possibly be better.

Go johnnies!
