Next Coach?

Not advisable to get too high (after wins) or too low (after losses). Love these seniors and will even say Lavin has had a decent year. That said, let's not forget the cumulative body of work and next year's roster.

Just amazing! Even after the biggest Garden win of the year someone needs to post on the next coach thread. :(

Easy, it was just in response to the declaration that today meant an extension.

Hope we can end this discussion now. Lavin is staying like it or not.

Not necessarily. Win-loss record may not be the only thing that important people who dislike him are basing their decision on.

I still think all options are on the table until one of our insiders confirms he's back.

And these "important people" who dislike him. Who might they be? Certainly not any of the posters here who dislike Lavin.

I didn't go to St. John's. Other than paying for basketball tickets, I've never given 1 cent to the school. So you'll have to ask people more important than me in the food chain that question.

There were rumblings that he's not well liked by certain people at the school. So until someone like Paultz, Moose, or Tom says he's 100 percent back, I don't know whether he is or not. I never posted he should be fired today, just that we don't know 100 percent he's staying.

Even if he deserves to be back, do you trust St. John's to make the correct decision? They've bumbled plenty of basketball-related decisions before. . .

I just want to hear from the "maven" who should be the new coach. Lavin sucks, we know. So "maven", who is better? Honest question. Avon, you can forward the answer.

One thing that I took note of--as the team played harder, played better and with intensity, Lavin seemed to coach a better X&O's game and the kids seem to like and respect him. Good for him.

Actually, LJ, in the past I would have definitely doubted if St. John's could make a correct decision regarding our basketball program. But with our new President, I have a lot more confidence.

stop with the Xs and Os....the guy has won 20 games with at least 4 games to play. We beat GTown easily WITHOUT D'Angelo scoring! That says something. For every bad decision he has made this year, I can list 2 goods. He has this team clicking, and it seems his defensive scheme has stifled defenses, this team has been very prepared during this stretch (except at GTown). My only question to what he does is his use of his time outs, which seem to come when WE are on a roll. That being said, as always, I will support Lav and the staff when the season is going. As of now I happy with his job as coach. He will need a tourney win or two with this group to really make a statement though. These kids deserve it, I hope we take out Duke and Dance at the Sweet 16!!!!

But with our new President, I have a lot more confidence.

I agree. But if the president's decision is small extension, no raise, tiny buyout for us but huge one for another team sniffing around, how does Lavin respond? I just think there are way too many factors still in play.

For me personally, as long as he brings in the talent to compensate for his X's and O's, and is not too stubborn to delegate to Whitesell if his X's and O's are indeed better, I'm OK with a two-year extension right now, and an annual one-year extension after that presuming he isn't a no-show on the recruiting trail.

I think anything longer term is risky with the guy with all the stuff that's been said about the staff.

Something I haven't seen mentioned, was the University President coming out to honor the seniors during the ceremony today. I don't think I've ever seen that happen in the past. Just shows he's plugged into the program. I know it's been stated he's a big fan of the team. Glad to see he's at the pulse of things and hopefully will be able to evaluate fairly taking all things into consideration.

Fr. Harrington was often in pre-game/halftime photos during the late '90s. I know because I was often asked to trail him to make sure he didn't miss it.

Got it. I really started going to games regularly starting in the early 00's, so I just hadn't remembered seeing him. I could be mistaken.

Have to give Lavin a lot of credit this year. The team is 20-9 with a 9-7 conference record at this point. Keep in mind that the Big East currently has the 2nd highest conference RPI and that speaks volumes. While his X's and O's are questionable at times, can't argue that he has put this team in the best position to win games. Basically has 1 skilled big man on the roster (Obekpa) yet still has found ways to win.

Like many of you, I'm not happy with the recruiting results for next year. But I haven't given up hope and still think he'll end up putting together a solid class.

Mave just wants someone that will let him kiss his head after big wins. I kid . . . .

Lavin has been criticized about his first year with Norm's kids but this is what normally happens when a new coach inherits a senior team like Boston College
"This is a character win all around," BC first-year coach Jim Christian said. "I didn't inherit a group of freshman. I inherited a group of seniors. Late February, losing nine in a row, I don't know how many seniors would have played it out."
Sure was a character win, now to start over Those BC players never won anything either under Steve Donahue before Christian.
