Next Coach?

McDermott was a three star recruit who happened to blossom into a NBA player.
I'll take a team of guys like him any day.

A lot of the 5 star recruits are walking hand grenades. I love Harrison but his suspension 2 years ago cost us a likely NCAA bid. Obepka and Jordan blew up on us this year. Look at the nonsense Seaton Hall went through this year. I'm not sure some of these kids are worth it.

Duke had a player this year that was raping women for two years. Duke only has 8 scholarship kids on the roster, stuff happens. You cannot be in a major conference with mid major talent and expect to make the dance. And you never know how the coach from a mid major will fare in the majors, its a big risk. We know what we get with Lavin, and if we can shake up his staff we will be fine. Kids want to play for him. Top 50 kids want to play for him, and have. We cannot say the same about Cluess, Hurley, Archie, or any other mid major coach..couple of years ago Anthony Grant was a cant miss young coach, and he was just fired. You make a mistake with a hire like that, you will wait atleast a decade before you are back

Yes, we do know what we get with Lavin. Mediocrity! and a guy who can no longer recruit top-50 talent because he can no longer sell them being a part of building something special, which is how he was able to pull in that first highly rated class.
The guy cant coach and now he cant recruit on an elite level because no one buys that he is on his way to awaking a "sleeping giant" anymore. Time to move on

From the guy who predicted before the season we sneak in as a 10.(One off). And also the predictor of Felix Balamou starting center.
Lavin and the school mutually part ways and welcome in Cluess. I am sure everyone will be ecstatic over that one. Well Baldi will anyway. Program will then be plunged into the dark days.Jack Williams kids will be on here telling stories about how their dad used to tell them about glory days of Lavin.
WE ARE NOSTRADAMUS

Thanks for the hello.I read most posts and will try to stay out of the personal attack stuff that goes on here.We all want a winner that's for sure I guess we all have our opinions on how to get there. From lurking in the shadows I know some here are very knowledgeable such as yourself and just feel in my heart a local up and comer will bring in the recruits we need eventually.

So let me understand this, Miller prefers Dayton at $400 k to coming to SJU for $1 mil.
Yeah, that makes sense.

It isn't SJU vs. Dayton it's SJU vs. all the other schools who will want him.

The thing I'm most concerned about with Lavin is the current recruiting class. If his main strength is recruiting and if he can't put together a full roster what's the point?

Now you are being silly Sheed was top 25, and Brandon Sampson is 39, we are still in the finals for Diallo top 10. So while you may not like Lavin, show me a coach that would have that many top flight kids, and willing to come here?

The above applies to Mas as well.

@NYPost_Brazille: Caught up with Steve Lavin this morning. Very confident he'll be back. #sjubb@NYPost_Brazille: Steve Lavin also backtracked on Chris Obekpa, wouldn't be surprised to see him return and thinks Rysheed Jordan will return. #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille: Steve Lavin said he has done everything he was asked to do at St. John's, in terms of on-court success, limiting off-court issues. #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille: Steve Lavin did say "of course" when asked if he needs a contract extension prior to next year. #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille: As far as non-quallifiers in his tenure, Steve Lavin said it's a problem nationwide. Not just #sjubb issue

@NYPost_Brazille: Phil Greene IV and D'Angelo Harrison both endorsed Steve Lavin's return. #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille: The St. John's fans who showed up and supported seniors touched D'Angelo Harrison and Phil Greene IV. Both said it meant a lot. #sjubb

This is the point that most here miss. It is SJU vs another big school for the best coaching prospects. Plenty of guys wanted no part of this job last time around.

If this is true, I am even more depressed than I was last night.

The competition for Miller isn't as steep as some here believe.
There are really no big jobs available anytime soon, with the possible exception of Indiana. If they fire Crean we would have to wait for them to chose btw Miller and Gregg Marshall. Whoever was left would then be our 1st choice. None of the other big 6 jobs ( Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, UNC, Duke) is open soon and the next tier of jobs (Mich, Mich St, Ohio St, Florida...) are filled for the next several years. St. Johns is actually among the most attractive gigs available now.

Miss State and Alabama are both available now in the SEC. But don't think anyone we could potentially be going after (Miller, Hurley's, etc.) would be interested in coaching in that conference.

Schools like Iowa beat out SJU for coaches. Many coaches and their wives don't want any part of this area. The local hoops scene is rife with losers. They prefer college towns over us - like or not. It happened in the prior two searches.

You think we are number one of any of these guys like Hurley or Miller? If so, you are sadly mistaken.

And please, no son of Pitino. Is he any better than son of Willard? If we lose Lavin, get the real Pitino and nothing less. He may be the one sure bet that would take on the challenge. Maybe Repole can give him one of his promising two year olds.

I've mostly stayed out of the Next Coach discussion during the season but if the school makes the move then my opinion of the names mentioned:

UPGRADES:
B. Donavan. If there are any truths to the rumor, then home run. Make the investment whatever it costs and this will change things immediately.
A Miller. Definitely
Seth Greenberg

WASH or WORSE:
Howland - good coach. Can he handle NY? I doubt it. Sorry LMF. Let's stay away from former Manhattan coaches (at all) and former UCLA coaches that left in a cloud.
Cluess - no. I like the idea of high powered offense, local good will and long term stability but to me this is a commitment to sustained mediocrity. I just don't see anything that says that results will be better on a bigger stage.
Dixon. Hadn't even occurred to me until reading Otis' post but interesting thought.
Jr. Pitino - no

DEFINITE NO:
Tommy Amaker - ludicrous
Fran redux - what is the word that = ludicrous squared?
Masiello - no (see Manhattan and fran squared)

GAMBLE with upside:
Bobby Hurley. Downside is that if he has success he'd be one of the first in line to replace K at Duke when he retires.
D Hurley. Some say he is the better coach but I'm not convinced - yet. I'd like to see him do something first and we'd probably need to pony up big and take a big gamble considering the state of the two programs.

And if we're just throwing names out there that to put out feelers and I have no idea of how feasible they are: Huggins would be a really interesting option. The guy is a complete a-hole but he can coach and develop players. Would make for some interesting press conferences. Loved how he dissed Bilas and Gotlieb like a pitbull.
Leonard Hamilton. Maybe he'd want to be in a basketball first situation?

Personally, I'd place Seth Greenberg in my "No List," as well. I'd easily take Howland over him.

i don't think there is a quick fix coach out there with the exception to a billy donovan at Fla. Keep Lav and stop this nonsense.

If they fire Crean...I'm not waiting for IU to choose between Marshall and Miller to see who is left. I'm getting Tom Crean.

I thought I remember Tim Cluess having not graduated from SJU, but Hofstra, and he did not leave on good terms. Please feel free to correct me if this is wrong.
