That is not what Lavin said. He was not talking about yesterday's game.
My mistake then.
My mistake also. I thought the article was referencing the chant to yesterdays game.

There were definitely no Fire Lavin chants at the game yesterday. What Lavin told me he was referring to,(over an expensive bottle of wine at a fancy restaurant in the village) was his sensitivity about the redmen.com message board topic entitled "Next Coach?".
Yes, he got a little choked up while discussing it but I think I reassured him. He told me that since he had gotten a little larger he was worried about the buttons on his shirt popping in the middle of a game. I told him that as a fat guy myself I totally understood his concerns but to many of the GQ Redmen fans how you look is much more important than whether you get the win. That is not what Lavin said. He was not talking about yesterday's game.

Did he sa anything about the wardrobe thread? He has absolutley refused to address that issue. He simply quietly returned to wearing a button up shirt without saying a word about the warm up suit.
One difference between this coach and the previous one is that we used to play games at CA at this point in the season with qualifying for the last seed in the BET on the line. Now we play these games with a realistic hope for qualifying for the NCAA.
It's not what I expected at this point in the Lavin regime, but is miles away from where we were not too long ago.
I know almost all of us are looking forward to a great win tomorrow night at MSG. Let's hope we walk out of that building with the season on the upswing.

I was just thinking back to the 2005-2006 season where we were battling for the last seed of the BET. Rutgers knocked us out on the final game of the year. Quincy Douby torched us for 36. I remember being at that game.

I'm sorry but they sold out a 5-6k arena yesterday. Him saying sell out is laughable. The stuff that comes out of his mouth sometimes....
But before anyone jumps down my throat I want this team to win and make the dance and do some damage when there.
Moose, surely you are aware that by Norm's end days there were less than 2,000 season tickets sold. Yesterday and a couple of times this season, the place was filled to the rafters, with energized fans. the program is not where we want it to be, but to be dismissive of yesterday's crowd as a sign that this program has life is just a plain falsehood.

The quotes (and yes they can be construed in different ways) where he speaks of a sellout of CA is a joke. Talking about putting 5-6k fannies in the seats of CA when honestly the last 1/4 that forced a sellout were likely there for a bubblehead that is stuck on a boat in the Pacific Ocean right now. If we have 15k at MSG and he wanted to talk about a near sellout as a barometer for where the program is that I have zero issues with. But don't use a CA sellout as that barometer. If you choose to disagree thats cool.

“We’ve become relevant and we have sellout crowds like this and fans who are engaged and care and get upset when we lose [and say], ‘Get rid of the coach,’ ” Lavin said, unprompted. “That means we did our job. When you have fans that are passionate, that really care, as opposed of the apathy we’ve had for 10 or 12 years here."
So according to Steve Lavin we are all of us passionate about Saint John's basketball because of the fine job Steve Lavin has done as coach. Before his arrival we were apathetic and disengaged and did not care, not really. Thank goodness Steve Lavin finally arrived to revive our passion about Saint John's basketball. He's like Cialis, nearly. Hey Saint John's fans, when the moment is right, will you be ready? It's only right once every four years, so you'd better be.
Maybe someone should tell him they used to yell at the last guy too. IIRC people were wearing bags over their heads and chanting and starting web sites and holding mock funerals. He must have really been doing a good job, huh.
Agreed, Fun. The insinuation that there was apathy before he arrived is off-putting to die hard fans. That said, I stopped bothering myself with his outrageous rhetoric. Now just laugh at it.

There is never any apathy among die-hard fans. Even in the gloomiest Norm years, the die-hards on this board were as involved with our program as ever. A winning program has more of an impact on those fans who are not die-hards. And IMHO, that is what we are seeing now. The fair weather fans, and the fair weather media, have been paying a lot more attention to us during the Lavin years than the Norm years.

I hear you. I think we had the casual fan engaged in 2011 after knocking off several ranked teams (the Pitt game is a great example). That said, a lot of the momentum was lost. I don't think we are at that 2011 level.

Agreed but this is not new. Our fans tend to only come out at the end of the season if we are in the race. I remember complaining about how empty MSG was for Notre Dame and how it was literally a Cuse home game that year. This year the place was empty for Gonzaga.
The real test will be next weekend with against Georgetown. They will bring a ton of fans. There's no reason we should not sellout a weekend home game with everything in the line.

I think it is fair to say that he has increased our profile and relevance locally and nationally (with fans, recruits and the media). He also underachieved last year with a roster that should have made the tournament and he fell way short of the acceptable standard for 2014 recruiting (jury still out this year). And the program has had more than an acceptable level of drama, realizing that some of that is inevitable in college hoops these days.
